Matt Asiata rushed for 95 yards, and Eddie Wide rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns as No. 7 Utah remained undefeated by holding off Air Force 28-23 in the Mountain West Conference on Saturday night.
Wide twice scored on 1-yard runs as Utah (8-0, 5-0) kept its BCS hopes alive. The Utes host No. 4 Texas Christian in a pivotal conference matchup next Saturday.
The loss was the third straight for Air Force (5-4, 3-3), which trailed by 18 points entering the fourth quarter before attempting a furious comeback.
Quarterback Tim Jefferson scored on a 59-yard run to make it 28-17. Air Force then forced a punt, and Jefferson tossed a 49-yard scoring pass to Kyle Halderman on the first play to cut Utah’s lead to five.
Utah’s Joe Phillips missed a 42-yard field goal with 3:21 left, but Air Force could not sustain its rally.
Jefferson passed for 201 yards and rushed for 67 more.
Utah took the lead for good when Asiata scored on a 1-yard run midway through the second quarter for a 14-10 lead.
Jordan Wynn tossed a 36-yard scoring pass to Luke Matthews in the third period, and Wide scored his second touchdown later in the quarter.
