Recap: California 50, Arizona State 17

Shane Vereen scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground and Kevin Riley passed for two more as California hammered Arizona State 50-17 in a Pac-10 game at Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday.

Vereen scored on runs of 5 and 8 yards, as Cal improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Sun Devils (3-4, 1-4) actually led 3-0 before Cal took complete control with 40 straight points. Riley fired touchdown passes of 4 yards to Keenan Allen and 52 yards to Marvin Jones (4 receptions, 110 yards).

The Golden Bears led 30-3 at the half. Even Cal’s special teams got on the scoreboard as Trevor Hankins returned a blocked punt for a touchdown to give Cal a 40-3 lead in the third quarter.

Vereen finished with 92 yards on 19 carries. Riley threw for 239 yards on 19 for 28 passing.

Arizona State’s Steven Threet completed 8 of 16 passes for 121 yards but was removed after throwing a pair of interceptions.
