Recap: Southern Mississippi 31, Kansas 16

Desmond Johnson rushed for 89 yards and a score and Southern Mississippi scored a pair of touchdowns right before the half to run away from Kansas with a 31-16 victory on Friday.

Deron Wilson returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and Austin Davis completed 18 of 23 passes for 151 yards and rushed for a score for the Golden Eagles, who stretched their home winning streak to an even 10 games.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when tailback V.J. Davis pulled up and passed to Jonathan Massey for a 1-yard score.

Kansas jumped on the board with a field goal early in the second but let it slip away soon after. The Golden Eagles were on the Jayhawks’ 49-yard line when Johnson rushed around the left side and got to the sideline, sprinting all the way to the end zone to push the lead to 14-3.

Kansas’ ensuing drive resulted in a punt, which Wilson blocked and took into the end zone to make it 21-3 with 1:41 left in the half.

The Jayhawks opened the third with a touchdown but Southern Miss put it away with a 15-play drive that ended with Davis’ touchdown rush from 1-yard out to make it 28-10 with 1:57 left in the third.
