A couple of books have odds out already on the 2012 Stanley Cup
Probably a little to start thinking about any future wagers this year before the draft but I'll most definitely be having a few season total and make/or not make the playoffs bets once the markets are priced up but one team that does stand out already at a big price is the NJ Devils at +3000. I think if they play the same way they played in the second half of this season, going 28-10 plus 3 OT losses, they'll be a top 4-5 seed come April for sure. All depending on player trades and other changes but I think there might be a nice oppurtunity to hedge this one out come playoff time when their price could be +700, +900
A couple of the big names that are poor value outright are Pitt +900 & Wings +1200

really have to see if Sid and Geno are 100% to start next season. Flower has demonstrated he's a top 5 goalie and the defense looks solid BUT even before both Sid and Geno went out with season ending injuries they were having problems scoring esp on the power play.
I would say the top Penguins off season priority is a big banger Thomas Holmstrom style power forward that can created shit in front of the net and bang home rebounds on the power play. the Predators UFA forward Joel Ward would look good in Black & Gold.

I personally believe that at this time next year the cup will be back in Chicago. Although their early exit from the playoffs was extremely frustrating as a fan the extra month off may be very beneficial for recovering from their lack of an offseason last year. The core of the team is very strong and this year the team will have some wiggle room with the cap to get everybody resigned and to also add some much needed depth that the team lacked this past year. Crawford in the playoffs showed that he's gonna be a stud and probably the best goalie I've seen in Chicago since Belfour. The top priority of the Hawks has to be a forward that can kill penalties because their pk last year was terrible. I've been reading about Madden wanting to come back to Chicago which would be huge for the pk and it would mean less time Hossa and/or Toews would have to spend killing penalties.
Sorry for writing so much I just remember last year at this time being on cloud 9 the whole summer after the Hawks won the cup, so enjoy every minute of this Boston fans because the start of next year is gonna come up real quick.

It's never too early. I remember a few years ago when the Oilers lost in the finals, wasn't too long after that they shipped Pronger off to the Ducks. I had a gut feeling and placed a bit on a Ducks team that won it all. First and only time I wagered that early but it turned out ok. I don't have that gut feeling for the upcoming season yet.

San Jose has been knocking on the door to get to the Cup and next year I think Joe Thornton finally gets the monkey off his back. Don't know if the Sharks are good enough to win the Cup though.

I agree that Chicago will be a lot stronger next year. They still have 5 very good forwards to go with two of the best defensemen in the league. Rest and reflection will do that team wonders. They need to rebuild their bottom two lines and find some more grit though.
San Jose is too weak defensively to be considered a legit contender and Dany Heatley has about as much heart as the Sedin sisters. I just can never believe in that team. I was pleasantly surprised by the play of Thornton and Marleau vs the Nucks.
Philly has been looking for a goalie for a very long time. They have tried Beezer, Burke, and many others, but can't find that true top echelon netminder. Being the starter in Philly is a lot different than being the starter in Phoenix or the backup in Anaheim. Pressure can do funny things to people. Even though Pronger is getting up there, his health is the key to that team.
It will be interesting to see what Washington does this off season. I'm sure management was taking notes of all of the grit displayed by the Bruins forwards on their march to the Cup. I expect the Caps to make some moves to add some size and nastiness to their top 3 lines. It will be tough to unload the vagina named Semin.
As Rat mentioned, all eyes will be on Sid and Geno. MAF is definitely one of the top goalies in the NHL and if all three of those guys are healthy, they will be near the top.
It will be very difficult for both of the teams in the finals to come out strong because of the very short summer coupled with the fact that neither team can be considered true powerhouses.
Let's see how the draft (trades) and free agency plays out before we get too excited about 2011-12 and drop some scratch on futures. Let's revisit this topic in a month.

Nothing wrong with Miller, Would take him over broduer right now any day.
I actually think bufallo will make a lot of big moves this year and buffalo will be my faveorite to come out of the east next season for sure. New owner with deep pockets who says he will spend

Sabres owner Terry Pegula has SO damn much $$$ that he's singlehandedly bankrolling Penn State's entry into Division I hockey much like the late Ralph Engelstad bankrolled North Dakota.
another team on the cusp along with the Flyers IF they get goaltending is Anaheim. "Der Kampfe Enten" have oodles of offense and a decent D. even with shakey goaltending, I was VERY suprised they got knocked off by the Predlies in the 1st round. that last minute goal in game 5 @ Anaheim was a killer.
the San Hosers have everything BUT something is WRONG in the mix and I personally think it's a bad dose of Heatley. when you look up "one way" in the encyclopedia, they have the guys picture. trade him for a couple of bangers with less skill and more heart.
same for Washington as TDD said. just replace the name Heatley with Semin.

Aint that the truth, Man i was so happy that night in june when MY oilers aquired heatly through a trade only to have heatly say NOPE not happening. What a swing and a piss off for us oiler fans. But let me tell you today we are all thanking Mr ( Its all about me) Heatly for being so arrogant, We are a better team now thanks to you amd i pretty much guantee the oilers will lift the cup before that heartless twat will

You would think the Devils would be better , they had that great run Hopefully Zach (who I think is a top 10 player in the league) is healthy and they get back to being a force. Probably Brodeurs last year (contract ends after the season) Also they have the #4 pick, maybe they get an NHL ready talent?
Hopefully the Penguins are healthy too they will be a top team in the East
I think Boston is deep and after winning they will be up there again.
Dont laugh but the Leafs had a good charge at the end there and actually seemed like a team ready to do some things. Reimer in net all year now maybe they return to the playoffs as well
Out west who knows? Chicago may be back up at the top
I had a dream the other night after the Bruins won that I was getting ready to watch the Blues and Lightning in the finals and I thought "wait they only had the cup for a day and now they have a new champion?"...im guessing that TB-STL will not be the finals next year

The Sabres lost in round 1 vs a team that played with a virtual empty net because Miller was actually worse.

Like how Broduer did in the final minute vs Hurricanes the year before.
Sorry dude but miller and about 20 other guys have a silver medla solely because of how well miller played in that tournment. Miller is a top 10 goalie in the world now with out a doubt

Olympics talk..wow did he really have a good 2 weeks stretch wow thats exciting
Im not rehashing how shitty Ryan Miller is and how he gave up 22 goals over the last 6 games
thats for another thread
Little bit contradicting yourself arnt you? You say wow he had a great 2 week stretch to win th eolympics then turn around and give me a 2 week stretch were he wasnt at his best? If it doesnt work one way it sure the hell doesnt work the other. I dont think he won a veznia for haveing head and shoulders like hair

He won the Vezina because people were in love with his little olympic stretch which shouldnt have been factored into the voting.
I would never bet on him in a big spot , that was my point. He has failed in playoff spots multiple times (with the supposedly better team) and my note was that I will never bet on him or a team he is on to win anything or make a playoff run

You think Hopkins is the guy eh ? I haven't really watched him maybe I just think they need more size.
my team is also desperate for size, but with the#1 pick i would have to lean towards the playmaker, size is easier to be attained via freeagency. a playmaker cannot, for a rebuilding team a subject i know of well!
