Astros +103 (Garcia/Webb)
Covers baseball record:
57-61, -5.21 units
ROTKNEE won at even money. WHITTINGTON PARK finished third at 5/1.
Here was my write-up on the race:
Saratoga picks for Sunday (8/1)
1-for-2 on Saturday, with KEVIN'S FOLLY ($16.40) winning impressively as he rallied thru the inside and drew away late. NYQUEST NIX went off at 9/1 odds in the other race and appeared in contention until midstretch, but tired late and finished off the board.
Saratoga - Race 5
#8 MAKART (15/1 ml)
Tough race here with a few other live contenders, but hard to overlook this 2yo Mike Maker firster at the huge 15/1 morning line. MAKART worked heads-up 4 different times (including once from the gate) with GIMMEDAMONEY, who came out of those drills to run a good second while chasing the runaway winner SENBEI thru quick fractions in what was the the faster of two maiden sprints that day. It's worth noting MAKART's fractions compare well with the winner of the other race (SHIPSATIONAL), who won by 6 lengths. Also note that GIMMEDAMONEY was ridden in that race by Tyler Gaffalione, who turns up here as well. Figures to show speed and run well from the outside post; nice overlay.
Mike Maker also trains ROTKNEE (5/2 ml), who ran a good second (clear of the rest of the field by 4 lengths) after having worked in company with SEAL BEACH (who ran a good third on opening weekend). ROTKNEE has since come back to work a best-of-40 bullet at 3 furlongs that was several ticks faster than the next-fastest drill of those 40.
The other contender I mentioned is WHITTINGTON PARK (7/2 ml), who worked 7 times in a row (including twice from the gate) with TIMBUKTU, who won on Wednesday. It should be noted however that TIMBUKTU won going two turns on grass, while this is a 6-furlong dirt sprint. He's also in a tough spot down on the rail inside the speedy ROTKNEE. So while he does figure to run well, he doesn't appear as attractive as the other two.
2021 Saratoga meet:
Win record: 4-for-17 (24%)
Total mutuels: $40.20 ($10.05 avg)
