I see the first three matchups as Cueto/Lester,
Moore/Hendricks, and Arrieta/Bumgarner. It is not out of the question to possibly
see great, competitive games out of Cueto and the undervalued Moore, but Arrieta
over Bumgarner, at San Francisco, would be a small stretch of the imagination.
The best question may be “Where are the Giants going to find some offense?”
Syndergaard completely dominated them last night (game score 82 fantasy, 85.3
KeyElement) and you are not going to get a three run dinger out of your eighth
place hitter every night, which may add to the legend of Familia, also known
for his blast given up to Alex Gordon last year. The Giants absolutely must hit either Lester
or Hendricks or the Monday night game will just be a showcase for Bumgarner and
little else. The Giants cannot go home 0-2 and hope to salvage the series.
Now, I know as well as anyone else they beat Hill and Kershaw
last week at home with Bumgarner and Blach, but that was the exception to the
rule in a “must win” scenario at home versus an opponent with nothing to play
for; BUT, down the stretch the
Giants were even a worse lefty hitting team than righty, posting only four
quality performances their last fifteen attempts and establishing a 2.80
offensive earned run average versus those fifteen lefties (NL average 3.91). I
know they were 30-22 on the season versus lefty, but April, May, June and July
are now irrelevant. NO team is
exactly the SAME team they were
then.
If Lester does not dominate Friday night it will be his own
fault, which could set up a “must win” scenario Saturday versus Hendricks, and
they certainly didn’t show Syndergaard anything last night. By starting Lester
in game one Joe Maddon also sets up the availability of his Cy Young contending
lefty being available fully rested for a game 5 situation, with Bumgarner
either being unavailable or going on short rest. Strategy like that is why
Maddon was hired.
This is an objective analysis, not based on any fan
fanaticism, home boy or every-other-year superstition. Take it for what it is
worth. BOL

Arrieta just an average Joe after this hot start.. If SF goes down 2-0 with a Bum Arrieta match up I would go all in on Giants.. as the Jay's proved last post season it's never over down 2-0 but obviously nobody wants to be in that position.. For some reason the AL series matchup are more interesting then NL.. nice write up..

When the going gets tough the tough get going and the Giants are very tough. Some people will forever say that the Giants can't possibly win in the playoffs. I'm not one of those. They made me bank in 10'12' and 14' as heavy underdogs a role they relish and this year seems much the same. This team strangely morphs into a beast when they get in the playoffs and the result is winning world championships. If you want or like to follow trends......that's a big one! Go Giants!

First off it doesn't have to and it won't be the 8th place hitter hitting a 3 run Homer. It's next guy up all the way down the lineup is capable of being a game changer and in all 3 world series it was different hero every night. Second. Second no one is more dominant than Noah on the cubs rotation. Hendricks is a fraud. Lester is a good left and Arrieta came back to reality this year. And if they have Hamels at 4 you can pencil in an L there. And the giants are playing with house money, cubs favorites from the start. Just depends what round they choke. Teams known for never get it done usually don't get it done. Cubs lineup doesn't scare me one bit talking about weak lineups

All the pressure is on the Cubs and I feel they will be the tighter team. Giants played the worst ever baseball 2nd half but since the WWF move Pagan put on that fan, they are ballin and loose. Love this matchup, let's make bank folks.

Nice write up but I think everyone knows the Cubs is the big favourite here . Series -263 I think this is the series for the Cubs to lose .
But about last night Wild Card game , the mets pitcher can only last that long and a big time pitcher like Bum can go all the way . That's the difference there . At least your bet get a push on your bet which is good . No damage there :)

RE: Two posts - Hamels pitches for Texas, not Chicago, and the Hammel you are thinking of, but can't remember, or don't know how to spell, will not see starting action.
Other than the responses are about what I expected, not analytical, just thoughts of some guys that already have their winner picked and don't want to take a hard look at the reality.

I've learned to throw all stats out the window when it comes to the Giants in the postseason.
I'm also pretty confident that nobody on the Cubs rotation will throw like Syndergaard threw yesterday, that was a top 5 dominating performance I've seen all year.

Just for the sake of discussion, Syndergaard started last night's game at a +42 pts. over the Giants offense versus righty in my program. Lester will enter at +50.7 versus the Giants offense versus lefty. Again, Joe Maddon is no dummy, he set it up this way on purpose.

You never know what you may get from Cueto. He is a key piece here. If the Giants can win one of the first two games then that starts to mount the pressure on the Cubs with Bum pitching in Game 3.
Anything short of the Champuonship is a disaster for the Cubs. Remember the Giants have been here before

nice write up. This is off the original subject, but do you have a play on tonight's Boston/Cleveland game?

Lester was yanked after just 2 2/3 innings, the then shortest outing of his career. Lester was tagged for 5 earned runs on 6 line drive hits, walked 3, on 75 sweaty pitches, and only managed to strike one out (foul tip into the mit lucky break)...
Syndergaard was never so roughed up by SF, and Lester for sure is no Thor.
Joe Maddon is no dummy, but he's also no WS-Champ. SF are no dummies, especially not in even-numbered years. If they get out of Chgo with a split, then Cubbies have to beat Bum and win 3 out of 4 from a WS-caliber team.
