Two herniated discs here. I had an MRI last year after I coughed real hard. Could barely walk for a few days and I was convinced that i needed to go under the knife. Got an MRI and revealed that i have 2 herniated discs. L4-5 and L5/S1. I did core strengthening work and it was fine for a while. Here I am a year later and after getting a sinus infection about a month ago which led to coughing, my back hurts again. I've been doing the core work but it still hurts. I'm kind of worried because my left leg is a bit weak and I notice it. I haven't had the injections like you did but what I know is that it is just a temporary fix. If I were you, I would do the core work. It will help and also make sure you have a good doctor. Muscle relaxers can help too if your back is in spasm. I say get a good doctor because it is very important. I work in the OR as an x ray tech. I cannot tell you how important it is to have a good doctor if God forbid you have to go under the knife. Best of luck

I had a herniated disc in my back on the left side l5s1. This was in 2004. I had nerve blocks, steroid injections and eventually pain medication. Nerve blocks/steroid injections provided zero benefit for me, maybe half a day relief at most.. I had surgery in 2007 which was a procedure called micro lumbar disectomy performed by a highly qualified neurosurgeon. I was 18 when i got injured. I had severe pain and numbness in my lower back and shooting pain down my left leg. The disc was putting pressure on my sciatic nerve and my piriformis. My original family doc did not take my injury seriously and thought that I was just trying to get time off work. I have been off work since the surgery was performed and my life has been turned upside down and I have more bad days than good days. I have tried physio, chiro, nerve blocks, exercises, surgery, and accupunture, and attempted work rehabilitation which did not go well.
If surgery is required, and you decide that it is a good option for you, then you should get it done ASAP. I only had a very small chance of success because I didn't have a fresh injury when I had the surgery. A fresh injury has a high chance of success while an old injury will probably not go as well because the nerve is already too damaged to recover. they cut the portion of the disc that is putting pressure on the nerve and cut it out. A fresh injury will heal but if it is not a fresh injury then the nerve may not heal, even though the disc is cut out, the damage is already done to the nerve. On top of that, you also have scar tissue that may cause more problems.
The pain is unbearable. Don't ignore or think that it will just go away on its own.

Danny, i have 2 bulging discs-L4/L5- been dealing with immense pain for 4 yrs now.have tried chiro, physio, massage, core excersise and accupuncture to no avail.tried the cortisone shot 2 yrs ago and that gave me some relief for about 4 weeks at a time. so i continued the shots for 2 yrs at 3 month intervals. After 2 yrs it unfortunately stopped giving me relief so my doc discontinued the shot.Very tough to live with this pain. You should try the cortisone because if it does work for you will be happy. My first shot didnt work either so 3 weeks later i went for another and that one did the trick.GL to you.

Epidural blocks work for some, but few. Didn't work for me L4, L5 bulging discs. Have had it for fifteen yrs. Only thing that helped was exercise. Not a cure but helped me.
