OK,,,, I'll play, I usually don't but here goes... What if the shot missed the backboard by a few feet any direction,,, nowhere close to making contact,,,, happens at least 1/3 the time on these shots I'd say. Is this even a thread then? Or do we just talk about how they just missed the shot before having to foul the big Zub . His intentional miss then becomes an afterthought because we didn't visually see a "close" dramatic ending.
After rewatching the final FT and half court attempt I would also argue this. There was 3.6 sec.left when the FT was att.... By the time Hayward rebounded the ball, landed, turned around, and even began to dribble upcourt the clock was down to 2.1 or 2.2. sec.
Point being they were forced to use up around 40% of the remaining time. Arguably they wouldn't have had to waste this time with a set up inbound play. How much closer could that shot have been from with 40% more time....3pt line or within a couple of feet of it probably.
Which leads me to this. I saw earlier comments that thought that the half court shot goes in 10% of the time. Or that it seems like countless times a game ends with that shot going down. I would say that if you really want countless endings on that shot, the result would be miss,,, we just don't recall them because of thier very lack of being memorable. I would also venture to say that the actual % being made would come in at closer to 1 in 50. However the actual % being made from within a few feet of the 3 line would come in @ even higher than 10%.
I actually can't stand Duke anymore than the next guy, but I was saying aloud that they would be better off missing the second FT before he even attempted the 1st one. Surprisingly everyone around me agreed for once.
I do agree though,,, Why the hell was Duke running Zoubeck aroung the top of the key all the 2nd half ???? I have to concur, that was fucking strange.. Hell he had a half foot on anyone trying to deny him the ball down low.
Good game though,, tied for 1st in my main bracket,, so that was allright.

Now I never played D1 College basketball but I played my fair share of high school and AAU summer leagues and not once have I ever been asked to miss a free throw down 2 with about 5 seconds to go. I get why you would do it but not under these circumstances. Instead you hopefully hit it, set up your defense, DONT FOUL, and if they make a crazy shot it goes to OT.
How many times have you seen someone hit a crazy shot to win the game? Countless times to me. Just a dumb play no matter what. It worked out for Duke (and ME) but still a stupid play.

I liked the move to miss the FT but did not like the choice not to but someone on the line. They left it to easy to get the rebound and getting going right away. You keep people on the line and challenge the rebound. They are not going to call over the back and you don't really even try but you do make it a little tougher to get the rebound and go.
Also it is not like Zubeck is a great FT shooter everyone seems to just assume if he would have tried to make it he would of. He is a 50 shooter so I think it was better to tell him to miss it and have a defense set up already with the players knowing where they were gonna be for defense. If you plan a make the players have to be ready for two different things.

Seriously that damn near cost them the game. You hit the FT, allow your defense to set and just defend the best you can. The worst case scenerio is you go to OT. However in this case the co%ksucker almost cost his team the victory because he wanted to cut 0.2 seconds more off the clock. WOW! Even though I had the Duke ML in a parlay I kinda wanted to see that go in to the co%ksucker could be the biggest fool in the world.
Anyone disagree with me about how stupid it was for him to intentionally miss the FT?
AGREE ... ACTUALLY IT HAS FUN TO WATCH ZOUBECK GRABING HIS HAIR WHILE THE BUTLER PLAYER SHOOT FROM MID COURT AND THE BALL ALMOST GOT IN THE BASKET.... HAHAHAH..... I BET IN THAT SPLIT SECON HE WS THINKING TO HIMSELF...."" WHAT AN ASS I AM.PLEASE LORD DONT ALLOW ME TO BE THE BIGGEST SUCKER EVER AND MADE THAT BALL MISS...""

i think he did it on his own
1. its the wrong play you try to make - let them inbound and foul before the shot.
2. he is the only one ready for the miss all the other duke players are off the line -he jumps to the ball, which is what the other players would have done, if they knew he was gonna miss.
3. he runs down the court with panic in his face as the shot goes up you can almost hear him going oh fuck oh fuck oh yessssssss
