Born in Fordham Hospital many years ago. Lived across the street from Fordham only the Bronx zoo and Botanical Gardens separated us on 187th Street Only Southern Blvd was the main avenue. My father went to Teddy Roosevelt HS on Fordham rd directly across the street from Fordham Univ. He was the valedictorian at Rooselvelt in 1931 and given a full scholarship to Fordham. But he was Italian and the Jesuits of Fordham decided to award the scholarship to the No 2 HS graduate. He was Irish The little Italy Belmont section of the Bronx and Bishop Perricone of Mt Carmel Church went up in arms . A meeting with the President of Fordham with the bishop and communities members of Belmont made the President of Fordham offer my father the full scholarship My father denies it but my mother always said some Italian wiseguys also had a meeting with the President of Fordham and if Joe D wasn't given the scholarship the President of Fordham with the team mascot Rams would be found in the East River. So Fordham offered my dad the scholarship But his father my grandfather was very thick headed and Manhattan College had heard of the controversy and offered my dad the full scholarship After all that my dad instead of walking 2 blocks from his apartment took the Manhattan College offer and had to ride the bus across the Bronx to attend MC.

Interesting family history, box! Love hearing stuff like that. I have fond memories of going to the botanical gardens there as a kid and taking my kids too. And my parents lived near Manhattan college when I waist college

The rivalry of these 2 schools in the same borough of NYC is equal to any rivalry in college . Tonight its the 110 th time these teams have played. My father graduated in 1936 from MC with a teaching degree in languages. Italian and Spanish . He graduated in 36 and got a job at Teddy R HS where he graduated from He taught there where he met my mother and in 1941 joined the US army and became an officer and Clarks 5th Army and served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy . He became an AMG officer. Allied Military Goverment. As the Germans retreated in Italy his group of US soldiers went from city to city and established democracy and arrested the fascist leaders. In Rome he was reassigned to investigate the Andreatine Caves massacres He entered Rome on June 5th as Gen Taylor 5th Army captured Rome .. But the timing was bad. The next day June 6th was D-day in Normandy 1944. Clark made headlines for a day and backpages after D-day.

sorry for the life time history my bad its just when these 2 schools meet there is so much history in this rivalry that unless your from NYC you really don't know about it My bad dc don't need support group help just a reminder of this game Both teams represent the A-10 and MAAC.. There campus's are 15 minutes away from each other. If you take the 1 train -subway and get off at van cortland park ,make a right and go up the hill and your at the Manhattan campus. One of my former pt gds is now the campus sercurity guys on campus. He does the home home games at Draddy. Rose Hill gym on the Fordham campus is a stone outside and inside has balconeys . Its a great place to watch a game. Jaspers and Rams are rivals in swimming soccer,baseball etc Although Texas -Oklahoma USC-Ucla etc are rival games this one goes even further back then those. My father would always say Manhattan played in the 1st Orange bowl in football back in 1935 . Not sure who they played. But he was a member of the Manhattan tip in club for years and all my life I heard Manhattan stories . The 7th inning strech in baseball was started at manhattan Brother Jasper would take his class to watch baseball games and in the 7 th inning would have all his students get up and stretch. Major league baseball saw that and picked it up,, Not sure if that story is true but my dad told it to me .. dc share that story with the head coach . lol good luck tonite I'll take the +12 and dc think your right I need some support groups

I personally think the history lesson reinforces and emphasizes the importance of his play. In this type of rivalry game (especially one steeped in history) taking the points is probably the right call.
@Box and one
Thanks for the background, story and history. I found it fascinating and good read. I agree with you on the play too. BOL!

Don't listen to morons here. I am from New York so it was good reading that used to go to alot of jasper games when they had their good runs. Fun atmosphere
Success is never final, failure is never fatal, and it's the courage that counts.

my bad Jaspers got blown out in Rose Hill. Both schools hate each other. Good news is across the street from Rose Hill GYM there is a white castle hamburger store. So after every game you cross Fordham rd and get 12 hamburgers .Think Jaspers need some extra energy with those hamburgers, Its hard to describe a white castle Hamburger if you never had one. There are no white castles in the Riverdale section of the Bronx where the Manhattan campus is .. Maybe they need one after last nights game My bad Thought Japers would put up a better fight, Will do better next time.
