Nailed all of my large plays last year, lost my smaller ones. Got up near +4,000, but went on a three game slide to end the season when I failed to identify Hawaii absolutely quit. My bad.
I have high hopes for this new Hawaii team. Young and talented and a good coach. I stand by my prediction that in 3 years Hawaii will win the Big West (Hawaii football is going to the MWC, all other sports are going to the Big West) and go to the NCAA Tourney. I also predict that Hawaii will lose their USC coach in 3-5 years........he is just too good, at least on the recruiting side.....
However, that prediction does not influence any game by game handicapping.
Notes:
- Hawaii is 7-2, but it could be Fool's Gold. Excluding BYU and D-II Hawaii Pacific, Hawaii's opponents are a combined 22-59. Hawaii played one of the easiest schedules in the nation with a strength of schedule at #339, and that includes BYU.
- Hawaii is young, with 6 High schoolers and 4 sophomores. It shows. Hawaii turns over the ball like crazy, 18.2 a game, the #9 Worst team in the nation......How bad is that? That means ¼ (26.2%) of all of Hawaii's possessions have ended in a turnover. Hawaii has NEVER had less than 16 turnovers in a game.
My Pick and Reasons Why:
- BOTH fifth year senior Hawaii team captains are OUT tonite. Starting PG Hiram Thompson injured his back against Hawaii Pacific last game, PF Bill Amis has an injured foot. Bill Amis was a huge loss and it showed during his absence, he was Hawaii's leading scorer and rebounder before his loss. Losing PG Hiram Thompson will be huge as well as he runs the offense and plays 30+ minutes.
- Two Hawaii Subs (Salter and Coleman) have left the Program due to lack of playing time. Those two were both highly touted and only had to wait......Their egos got in the way....they woulda played tonite if they had just waited one more week......
- Hawaii has only 8 players tonite. NOT A SINGLE PLAYER ON HAWAII'S ROSTER PLAYED A GAME LAST YEAR OF D-1 BASKETBALL. Hawaii will start a high schooler at PG, McDonalds all american candidate Bobby Miles, true Sophomores at PF and C, Joaquim and Thomas, a high schooler at SF, Trevor Wiseman, and a Junior transfer from Arizona SG Zane Johnson. All of these guys are highly touted and are talented......but young and raw as hell.....
- Out of 350+ schools in NCAA D-1 basketball, Florida State ranks #9 in steals at 9.2 per game. They should be able to force Hawaii into their average of 18 per game.....
- Hawaii is an excellent shooting team (46.6%). However, they have done this against the worst schedule in the nation. Against the one team with a winning record (BYU) they shot 30%. Florida State has a top ranked defense giving up just 33.7% fg.
- Hawaii appears to be a great rebounding team, however, PF Amis is out. Also, note the teams Hawaii dominated in rebounds, most of those teams had only one guy over 6ft 7in. Florida State is #8 in the nation in rebounding and should dominate this area as well.
Hawaii will be pumped tonite. Hawaii's kids are good, and they will be a force down the road. Florida State is just way too big and way too senior laden for Hawaii. Hawaii will be forced into their turnovers, not have the open looks they are used to, and will not get the rebounds they usually get against smaller teams....... 8 kids against Florida State just isn't enough.... Florida State holds Hawaii to 50-60 and pulls away.....
FSU -11 1440 to win 1400
As always, cap for yourself. To me this looks like a no brainer, but Hawaii may play way above their heads.......Good luck in whatever you play.....

Was Bobby Miles really an all-mcdonalds all-american candidate. He rates around 150th at his position on almost all the scouting sites. I don't think these guys are near as talented as you say they are. None of thsoe guys are 3 star recruits other than Johnson. These kids have been playing pretty well though, so we'll see. Definitely big losses amis & Thompson (2 of their 3 best I'd say)

Well, that is all we hear down here from our broadcasters.....lol, if it is true or not.....that is another story.....
In my first post of the year, I noted Hawaii has a top 100 recruiting class in most publications and as high as #7.....that is all verifiable....trust me, with the kind of NO STAR recruits we have had over the last decade....these kids look ALL WORLD....lmao.....
No Matter .....hopefully they play like kids and get their ass kicked...

Mind showing me the ridiculous service that had them ranked #7. That is hysterical to me. They have had similar talent last few years, 3 2 stars in 07 (including Amis). Dwain Williams from providence was also a 3 star. Maybe I am completely mistaken, but Johnson seems like the only notable here (talent wise)
Barnes was not even ranked on rivals, either was miles, joaquim, joston thomas or wiseman.

gcnmoo.....i think it is ridiculous too, like i mentioned in my first post this year, it is based on numbers as well so hawaii had sheer volume of players.....
gcnmoo, i usually dont respond here on covers for the last 5 years or so, nothing against you, this place just becomes a mad house.......we can talk at the other message board......
if you need more recruiting information and rankings, it can be gleaned from the rivals message board for hawaii, or you can go to sporthawaii.com and find links and articles ......
