Is Patrick Mahomes the New Tech on the Block?
Let me start by saying I am a lifetime Broncos fan, so there are sure to be no fan biases in these next statements. In fact, quite the opposite, as I have a complete and utter disdain for the Kansas City Chiefs.
I have a question.
Has anybody watched Patrick Mahomes this year and thought this guy could end up being the next greatest NFL quarterback to play this game? Before you reflexively dismiss this question as nothing more than a quick judgement on my part with a good amount of recency bias mixed in, really think about what I'm asking. From what you've seen. From what you've felt. From what you've experienced before. Doesn't this feel different? Everything from big games, big moments, left-handed throws on 4th down, 4th & 20s with the game on the line, playing against the best defenses in the league, the best offenses in the league, the best coaches in the league; and succeeding at the highest of levels against all of those challenges...in his first year as a starter. Now you pit him in the AFC Championship Game in his first year starting, playing the GOAT himself, Tom Brady. Don't forget, these two have played against each other already.
During Week Six of the regular season, a 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs team visited Foxborough, MA. By this time the Patrick Mahomes hype train had gathered a considerable amount of steam. Mahomes was averaging over 300 yards passing per game with 14 TDs to just 2 INTs through the first five games. This Week Six matchup was being nationally televised on SNF; the marquee game of the week. Tom Brady knew what was happening, at least had a feeling. And he wanted to stop the inevitable, at least one last time. And he did. The Patriots won a 43-40 thriller that saw Mahomes almost bring his team back from the dead after being down 24-9 in the chilly, hostile comforts of Foxborough. Mahomes experienced his first loss that day, and Brady showed once again why he is the GOAT. He does it time and time again, on the biggest and brightest of stages. Over the course of his 18 year career, Tom Brady has done it all, and you've heard it all.
