Imagine if he had to play during the day?? This just seems odd considering he won the last 2 Aussie Opens where it's hot as hell. My guess is Rog got outta bed yesterday not feeling too spry which happens as you get older and the humidity was a perfect storm of sorts. He's not one to make excuses so the fact that he actually blamed the humidity tells you how crappy he was feeling. And it sure showed. He was absolutely dreadful by his standards.

Its ashame he didnt take the high road here and give Millman the credit for never quitting...sure Roger can say he had a bad serving day (epically bad based on his standards), but other than that, cmon Fed...you had 2 set points on your serve to go up 2 sets and ice the match away...just like Serena - the greats have a hard time saying they lost fair and square...always an excuse (Lebron's fake broken hand excuse was laughable)

i was really not a surprise if you have been watching him closely whole 2018.
He is just riding on his serve precision and barely returning opponents serves. Afterall he is 37 and he is not moving anywhere close to how he used to. He is looking to close each point in 2-3 shots and scared to go into rallies. Its just not yesterday. Its been a trend and I posted here multiple here multiple times.
I think its time he hang up the cleats and leave up to the youngsters to chase his records.

Well. He had absolutely steamrolled his first 3 foes. He looked magical against Kyrgios. He smoked Nishioka and Paire who are about on par with Millman. There was nothing to suggest in his current form he was going to have any trouble here. Its easy to say after the fact when he double faults a million times that you could see it coming. He hasnt served this bad, well, ever? And that was the difference in this match.

let's not overreact here...hes's still top 3 in the world behind Rafa and Djoker at this moment...he had a bad serving day, that's it. He trains in Dubai so I find it odd he's using heat as an excuse, but it's more the humidity and the sweat factor i'm sure was bothering him...dare I say in the back of his mind, he's also looking to blame Uni Qlo for their sweat absorption material, or lack thereof...Nike clothes would've suited Roger much better from a familiarity aspect.
Roger will be in the mix for few more years, he's not going anywhere, however he will need to catch a few breaks along the way in the draws and have an amazing 2 weeks to contend for future slams...the weather was brutal but I cannot just give him a pass because of his age...he should have been up2-0 sets and cruising to the finish line vs a mentally broken down Millman had he closed out that 2nd set.

Federer wins that match in straights if he doesnt inexplicably blow that 40-15 lead serving it out. Felt like he just let down mentally for a second and the entire match flipped on its head.

We will talk how good Federer still is if and when he beats Djoker/Nadal/Cilic/Delpo. Till then he can win few rounds against unknown players on favorable draws being on of the top seeds.
Till I see a quality win, I essentially don't think he is a top 3 player anymore.
Took entire clay season off, lost to Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon, lost to Millman at US open, lost to Djoker in straight sets at Cinci, lost to Delpo at Indian Wells, lost to Kokkinakis at Miami. He won some dinky dunky grass court tournaments. thats all.

Personally, i thought Roger's career was over 2-3 years ago, when he had those injuries and trouble having any important results, but last year he came back, somehow, made changes to his game and won 2 majors. He continued that form into this year and won the AO, all these 3 results are outstanding, considering his age, but also circumstantial, his opposition wasn't that strong, during those 3 majors.
From all the big 4, Roger is hands down the most talented one, but age takes a toll, even on him, so when he losses a game, like last night, which even for his current circumstances he should've won easily, it can't only because one thing, it was the perfect storm. Even if it was that humid, his excuse was... lame, but giving his ego and achievements, a "reasonable" one.
Even if he has managed his physical effort, the psychical part is harder, cause you can see his concentration isn't there, when he is playing bad, he rushes the points, makes silly mistakes and his accuracy shot is low.
It's fascinating he has made it to this age, results wise, all done though sheer talent, and he will stream roll random mugs even when he is 40, he is that good, but maybe he wont ever win a GS again, maybe this time around it's over...

yes Lipps I agree, he will be one of the few favs for the next few wimbledons solely based on his acuity on grass compared to everyone else...but I think if he wins another hard court slam it would come as a surprise to many, myself included....he would have to catch lightning in a bottle and serve like a robot for 2 weeks.

The elephant in the room is that he had to play Novak even if he won. He admitted in his interview that the courts playing slow affected him and what he thought of his chances in this tournament. He knew had virtually zero chance against Djoker or Nadal in these slow, humid conditions. So he packed it in. He even said at some point during last night's match he looked forward to the whole ordeal coming to an end.
