Already made my pick for this game but wanted to say a few blurbs about the first game of the new NFL season without cluttering my other thread.
The pick: Chiefs +9
All this 19 and 0 talk is getting ridiculous!
Yes we all know the Patriots are the best team in the league(if we are going by last year's results), but this is a brand new season let's not get ahead of ourselves...
So, fast forward to September 7.. Thursday night primetime.. defending champs at home... raising the championship banner.. crowds will be amped... how will the Chiefs get up for this game without possibly getting blown out??!
Reason #1: Andy Reid
If there is one coach i would take with me on the road it is Andy Reid. He has one of the best winning % on the road, averaging about 5 to 6 wins per season on the road, but let's get serious.. this game won't be one of them. However, in 10 of his 14 road losses with the Chiefs he has lost by a margin of 9 or less. You can be sure he will have his team prepared to fight till the clock hits zero next Thursday night which leads me to...
Reason #2: The Playoff Losses at the hands of the Patriots...
The last time Andy Reid went against the Patriots was in the divisional round a few years back. The Chiefs lost to the Patriots who then went on to win Super Bowl 49. 10 years before that, the Patriots beat the Eagles in Super Bowl 39. You can't help but think this will always be in the back of Reid's mind when he gets his team motivated to play. While his head to head record against Brady and Belichick is nothing to write home about: 1 win, 5 losses. the margin of his losses are 21, 3, 3, 18, 7. It's reasonable to think he can get his team to play within the numbers.

Pats went 13-3 ATS last year. No matter how high they pushed the line. Brady won't be on a suspension to start the year. Gronkowski will be healthy for this game. KC will utilize a rookie RB on the road. Tyreek Hill has to be the #1. Pats defense isn't that bad...
I can't see the Chiefs covering this game. Don't over think it.

Made an error with reason #2. Got the 2015 and 2016 playoffs mixed up. Pats went on to lose to the Broncos. Pats never played the Chiefs on their way to Super Bowl 49..
I was tired when i posted that, So much football action last night college and pros

The thing with last season is that the Brady suspemsion threw everyone off, Pats lines were low. The AFC North and NFC West were unexpectedly weak last year so the Pats just coasted and never looked back. The books did not adjust accordingly. I just cant see the Pats going 13-3 ats again. If Pats come out like gangbusters you can be sure you will see 20 pt spreads soon enough and the standard 14 to 17 pt spreads like in 2007 when the Pats went 16-0.

No Edelman. In 9 games without him pats are 4-5. Getting nine points on a team that went 12-4 last year is value. Pats won't be 13-3 Ats this year.

Cooks is better than Edelman, and gronk is healthy. Your argument doesn't have anything. You act like Edelman is the patriots LMFAO. Can you say Tom Brady???

Exactly. Minus 1 but plus 2 is a better receiving group this year.
Mismanging the salary cap was a big mistake, Baltimore was happy about that getting Maclin. Hill will be getting the best cover guy now, i dont think he's up to the task. Rookie at RB and Alex Smith.

Like i said earlier, the Chiefs arent winning this game mainly because they have had issues running the ball and a rookie back making his first pro start. To make things tougher Patriots run defense is still solid so its not like the Chiefs will have much success running anyway. Ware and West have been underwhelming as an RB tandem since Jamaal Charles injury the last two seasons. So losing Spencer Ware is not a real big deal to me. Kareem Hunt has more upside but is green in the gill. Just as long as he doesnt fumble the ball and can manage some yardage then the Chiefs have nothing to lose going with Hunt . Its a case of sooner rather than later that he would take the lead role. I like the element of surprise here going with Hunt instead of West.
Only thing that scares me about siding with the Chiefs is the"defending Super Bowl Champs in week 1 trend": 15-2 SU; 10-4-3 or 11-4 ats since 2000 depending what line you got the Pats the other year. I remember i had the Steelers +7 and the game pushed. And i will have the balls to go against this trend again
Except last year, i sided with the Broncos against the Panthers. I remember everyone was on the Panthers that night who thought they would exact their revenge for the SB loss. I love my week 1 homedogs.. ;)

Agree with you about the Hunt vs Ware comparison. I think it may take a few games to get the rookie grounded. Playing the Superbowl Champ Pats on opening night would cause anyone jitters starting the first game in the NFL. My main concern about Hunt early in the season is pass protection regardless of whats been said about his ability to protect. Smith hates holding the ball, double team Kelce, chuck little Tyreek at the line and send the house. The kid will have his hands full.

The lines about right, i'll give the points.
The more i read up on Kareem Hunt the more i'm liking him. Havent seen live game footage of his playing, Week 1 will be my first look. but from what i have seen from the highlight reel against the Bengals and Seahawks 1st team defense: he can run downhill, isnt afraid to initiate contact and get extra yards after contact, can catch the ball out of the backfield. He can pass block and has good hands. And to ease my fears about fumbles.. in his college career he has only fumbled once in over 800 touches! Ware was fumble prone. Hunt just needs to work on his field vision a bit.

By game 4 he'll be better prepared.
True that. big stage for a young kid being thrust in so early. My initial impression is i "think" he's ready for primetime. I have to see him live to see how he does in pass protection. Forget about getting 100 yards against this defense. If he can do the little things like pass protect and protect the football, avoid turnovers and find a way to move the chains against the defending champs he will have pass my test with flying colors and is ready for the pro level.
My question for you would be. How will the Pats pass rush look without Long, Ninkovich and Sheard?
I just think the Chiefs O-line is much better than the ones Alex Smith had in his first couple years in KC. I just dont see Alex Smith getting pressured that much and will have time to throw.

Even though New England's scary to go against and Alex Smith is hard to trust, I think this line is pretty inflated. The Pats have covered a lot of inflated lines over the last year but I still like the Chiefs as a value play at +9.

they picked up Cameron Erving from the Browns but just for o-line depth. 4 of 5 starters from last season return with revolving door at LG. C Mitch Morse was their best linemen followed by LT Eric Fisher. RT Mitchell Schwartz was good in Cleveland but dipped slightly in KC. They were decent not great but continuity should help. Definitely cutted down on the sacks by 35% where Alex Smith used to get sack 45-50 times a season..
And thats true the Pats can plug and play and squeeze the most out of their players, but do you expect the new contributors to make dividends right away? We'll find out. Im sure David Harris, Lawrence Guy and Stephon Gilmore will be solid replacements over the course of the season.
