It was the kind of morning only Hollywood could write. A player gets arrested on his way to a Major Championship, gets released in time to make his tee time, and cards a 66 to remain the second betting choice on the PGA Championship odds board.

Well, Hollywood, eat your heart out because that's a real thing that happened. Scottie Scheffler, through all the emotions and uncertainty, held firm on the course and kept himself in contention.

Round 1 leader Xander Schauffele remains the betting favorite, firing a three-under 68, to lead by one over Collin Morikawa

Analysis

As if a course record in Round 1 wasn't enough to keep people talking, Friday morning provided plenty of headlines and talking points, but for all the wrong reasons.

After getting arrested — yes, arrested — world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler remained unflappable and carded a five-under 66. He remains three shots back of Xander Schauffele who is in the clubhouse with a one-stroke lead over Colin Morikawa.

What is the cut at the PGA Championship?

The PGA Championship's cut rule narrows down the field after 36 holes. It permits only the top 70 golfers, including ties, to proceed to the final two rounds. Those who rank 71st or lower following the first two rounds do not move forward in the championship.
