Recap: Western Kentucky 66, Old Dominion 51

Western Kentucky 66, Old Dominion 51: Brandon Doughty threw for 371 yards and five touchdowns while Juwan Gardner took an interception back 96 yards for a key score as the Hilltoppers held off the visiting Monarchs.

Doughty completed 23-of-26 attempts and broke his own single-season school record for yards (2,871) while passing Kawaun Jakes (22) for the single-season mark in TD passes with 23. Leon Allen rushed for 182 yards and a pair of scores while Antwane Grant caught two touchdown passes for Western Kentucky (3-4, 1-3 Conference USA).

Taylor Heinicke went 27-of-40 for 471 yards with three scores but tossed a pair of interceptions as Old Dominion (3-5, 1-4) lost its fourth straight contest. Ray Lawry rushed for 148 yards and four touchdowns while Antonio Vaughan (31-game reception streak) had 220 yards and two scores on six catches for the Monarchs.

Kylen Towner scored on a 94-yard kickoff return for Western Kentucky in the third quarter, but the Monarchs kept answering as Heinicke’s 39-yard scoring strike to Vaughan brought them within 56-51. Old Dominion drove inside the Hilltoppers 5 on its next possession before Gardner picked off Heinicke and went all the way to push the lead to 12.

Lawry sandwiched touchdown runs around a fumble by Western Kentucky early in the second quarter to pull Old Dominion within 21-16. Doughty and Heinicke traded a pair of scoring strikes before the Hilltoppers quarterback connected with Jared Dangerfield for a 19-yard TD - his fifth of the half - with 12 seconds left for a 42-30 lead at intermission.
