Georgia Tech 56, Pittsburgh 28: Broderick Snoddy rushed for three touchdowns and the visiting Yellow Jackets forced six turnovers – five in the first quarter – to snap a two-game losing streak.
Georgia Tech (6-2, 3-2 ACC) gave up 79 points in back-to-back losses, but recovered five fumbles in the first six minutes as the Yellow Jackets built a 28-0 advantage. Synjyn Days finished with 110 yards rushing on 22 carries, quarterback Justin Thomas rushed for 92 yards and threw for 147 yards, and Snoddy added 82 yards rushing as the Yellow Jackets rushed for 465 yards.
James Conner surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark on the season with 120 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers (4-4, 2-2), who have dropped four of their past five. Pittsburgh tied a FBS record with five fumbles lost in the first quarter and finished with six miscues.
Pittsburgh fumbled on the game’s second play to set up Snoddy’s 4-yard touchdown run 2:03 into the game, and after Georgia Tech’s D.J. White stripped Conner at the goal line, Thomas hit Perkins for a 79-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead four minutes into the contest. Pittsburgh fumbled on the second snap of its next possession, setting up Thomas’ 14-yard TD run on the next play, and Snoddy scored a minute later after another Pittsburgh fumble to make it 28-0 Yellow Jackets with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
Conner scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards in the second quarter to bring the Panthers within 28-14 at halftime, but Snoddy’s 28-yard run with 11:16 left in the third gave Georgia Tech a 35-14 advantage. Conner’s 16-yard run five minutes later cut the deficit back to 14, but Tony Zenon’s 57-yard run early in the fourth quarter – one play after the Panthers lost their sixth fumble of the day – re-established a 21-point cushion.
