Beating American Tiger Woods was only the start of an amazing week for compatriot Shaun Micheel. Now he has a chance to win the richest prize in golf.
Micheel went the distance for the first time Saturday in the World Match Play Championship, outlasting Sweden's Robert Karlsson for a 2-up victory that put him into the final match against England's Paul Casey.
The winner gets one million pounds ($2.1 million Cdn), the largest cheque in official tournaments worldwide. Micheel also needs to win to climb into the top 50 in the world and qualify for the US$7.5-million World Golf Championship in two weeks outside London.
But his work is far from finished.
Micheel, who started the week at Wentworth by ending Woods' five-tournament winning streak, again has to play an Englishman in front of an English gallery, which might be the closest he gets to a Ryder Cup experience. He beat Luke Donald in the quarter-finals.
Casey kept the ball in play and kept the pressure on Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, his third straight victory without going all 36 holes. Casey, trying to become the first player to win in his debut since South African Ernie Els in 1994, hit a dive-iron from 210 yards into four feet for an eagle on the 12th hole, and only needed to par the next hole to win 6 and 5.
''For whatever reason, it wasn't Colin's best,'' Casey said.
It wasn't Casey's best either, but he rarely missed the fairway - usually 20 yards or more past Montgomerie - and while he didn't give himself many easy birdie chances, he was rarely in position to make worse than par.
Casey built a 5-up lead at lunch, posting a 68 as Montgomerie played some of his worst golf of the week. He lost one hole with a three-putt, hit an approach so badly that he uttered ''What was that?'' - a phrase not heard since his seven-iron on the 18th hole at Winged Foot that cost him the U.S. Open - and made only two birdies.

I've just been reading some excerpts from this dimwits tragic book. And football players wonder why the general public cannot relate to them? Seriously, this guy is living on another planet.
Cole:
"My worst fears were confirmed when, as Thierry and I sat in the centre circle after the final whistle, his name was sung from the rooftops while my contribution was recognised by a deafening silence.
"As his chants faded away we waited for mine. And we waited. And there was nothing. 'They're not bothered about me', I said, resigned to the fact. It was like I was the invisible man."
Oh my god, talk about EGO!! This guy's is huge. Can you imagine if every other star player started crying because their name wasn't sung in the centre circle?
Cole:
"As it turned out, the Arsenal board had other ideas about rubber-stamping Mr Dein’s recommendation. At a board meeting held two days before our 1–0 away defeat at Bolton in January, it was decided the maximum offer should be £55,000 a week. I don’t believe the board gave a damn about keeping me. It preferred to haggle over a difference of £5,000."
Ok, so first of all, why do keep knocking Dein. If he recommended £60k and the board said £55k, then it was obviously not Dein's fault. Do you know what a recommendation is?
"I don’t believe the board gave a damn about keeping me."
Ok, so Dein offers you £35k, which you call a "hell of a lot of money", but you want more because even though it's a hell of a lot money, you want a hell of a lot more, so Arsenal offer you £55k, and somehow you took this as meaning Arsenal don't want you?!?
Cole:
"Ash! Are you listening?" said a virtually hyperventilating Jonathan. "I’m here in the office and David Dein is saying they aren’t going to give you £60k a week. They’ve agreed £55k and this is their best and final offer. Are you happy with that?"
When I heard Jonathan repeat the figure of £55k, I nearly swerved off the road. "He is taking the piss, Jonathan!" I yelled down the phone. I was so incensed. I was trembling with anger."
First of all, it's illegal to use your mobile while driving dimwit. Second, ahem... see how this reads to the man on the street Cashley. You are "trembling with anger" because Arsenal only offered you £55 GRAND A WEEK!!
So what does poor Ashley do next, poor downtrodden Ashley and his paltry £55k a week. Does he go to the board and resign? Does he say I will leave if I don't get £60k - it's called negotiation Cashley, which is what Arsenal have been doing all along - no, he has an illegal meeting with Chelsea. Hey, that's real classy stuff.
This guy is the laughing stock of football. There is not a single person in this country, or anywhere I should imagine, who will have sympathy for this egotistical berk. And he's obviously living on fat head planet if he possibly thinks anyone is going to sympathise with him or even relate to him.
But thanks for the book Cole, it's all there in black and white. A blueprint of what money and greed does to a footballer's brain. Cole is an utterly vile and disgusting character, with no values, humility, self-respect or morals. Living in another world. I'm glad he's gone, and to a club more soulless and ungrateful than Arsenal could ever be in a million years - they should get on like a house on fire.

Renault says it will supply engines to the Red Bull Formula One group for the next two seasons starting in 2007.
The French manufacturer says the deal is with Red Bull GmbH, the parent company of the F1 teams and that a final decision on which team will use the engines will be made at a later date.
Currently, Red Bull Racing has a contract with Ferrari to use their engines, however, its believed they would like to transfer that deal to its sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso, while taking up the Renault offer.
Toro Rosso are currently using rev-limited Cosworth V10 engines as part of the deal with the former Minardi team. They will be dropping those engines for the 2007 season.
This is big news for Renault fans...it'll bring more money to renault and allow them to test different options. It also makes it better for F1 fans in general. It'll have another team with a high quality engine.
Renault joins Toyota, Honda and Ferrari who will supply two teams with engines in 2007. Toyota will supply Williams F1 with V8 engines while Honda will continue their supply of Super Aguri with engines. Ferrari have also been rumored to be in talks to supply the newly renamed Spyker MF1 Racing team next year

She was playing in the 84 Lumber Classic and, for a while Friday, it appeared Michelle Wie might shoot an 84.
Wie's drives constantly landed short of the big-hitting pros, forcing her to use long irons on her second shots when the men were pulling out seven-irons. Her putts wouldn't drop, either, during a second-round 81 - even those routine four-to-six-footers most on tour can sink by the dozens.

Fernando Alonso criticized rival Michael Schumacher, saying the German racer is the ''most unsporting driver'' in Formula One history.
Alonso's harsh comments to Spanish radio station Marca on Monday night came one day after Schumacher won the Italian Grand Prix and announced that he will retire at the end of the season.
The Ferrari driver moved to within two points of Alonso in the championship standings.
''Michael is the man with the most sanctions and the most unsporting driver in the history of Formula One,'' Alonso said.
He also compared him to Zinedine Zidane, the France soccer captain who retired after being sent off for a head-butt in July's World Cup final.
''Zidane retired with more glory than Schumacher, but I can still see that he has been the fastest driver for the last 10 years, and racing against him has been an honour,'' he said.
''That doesn't take away from the fact that he has been the best driver and it has been an honour and pleasure to battle against him. Everyone has their time and you have to respect his decision. Things will be more equal now.''
Alonso also hinted that the championship had been fixed in favour of Schumacher.
On Sunday, he had his race stopped when his engine failed 10 laps from the end. Alonso was penalized five places on the starting grid for blocking Ferrari's Felipe Massa in qualifying Saturday and started 10th.
''No one is going to believe the penalty I was given for a long time to come,'' Alonso said.
''The excuse they gave was far from honest. That the Italian newspapers headlined this as a robbery is not good for our sport. One thing I am clear about, though, is that he who laughs last, laughs longest,'' Alonso said.
Meanwhile, Alonso will miss testing in Jerez, Spain, this week due to a bruised knee.
''I banged my knee on the side of the chassis during practice in Monza and there is some bruising,'' he said in a Renault statement. ''I raced with the problem at the weekend, but we took the decision not to test this week to let it recover in the best way possible.''
Alonso said he is ''very optimistic'' he will beat Schumacher for the title.
''The Renault has been very, very quick in the last three races, nearly as quick as Ferrari or even faster,'' he said. ''So for the last three races I think we should be the favourites.''

Defending champion Barcelona routed Bulgarian team Levski Sofia 5-0 at Camp Nou stadium on first-half goals by Andres Iniesta and Ludovic Giuly, and three in the second half from Carles Puyol, Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho.
Chelsea, which has spent about 400 million pounds (C$839.7 Cdn) in the last three years for players, beat Werder Bremen 2-0 on goals by Michael Essien and Michael Ballack. Ballack's penalty was his first goal for Chelsea since moving from Bayern Munich.
Chelsea and Barcelona are both in Group A and will play in back-to-back games on Oct. 18 and 31.
In Barcelona's victory, it marked the first time the Spanish team has worn advertising on the front of its dark red-and-blue shirts for a competitive game. The club now carries the logo of UNICEF, the United Nations humanitarian agency.
Barcelona was the last major European club to shun putting a sponsor's name on its shirt.
In other action, it was Bayern Munich 4 Spartak Moscow 0, and Sporting Lisbon 1 Inter Milan 0 in Group B; Galatasaray 0 Bordeaux 0, and PSV Eindhoven 0 Liverpool 0 in Group C; and Olympiakos 2 Valencia 4, and AS Roma 4, Shakhtar Donetsk 0 in Group D.
Bayern Munich bounced back from a sluggish start with a strong second half to bury Spartak Moscow 4-0.
Claudio Pizarro scored the first goal in the 48th minute, and Roque Santa Cruz padded the lead in the 52nd. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Hasan Salihamidzic wrapped up the scoring later in the half.
Calgary-raised midfielder owen Hargreaves played for Bayern.
In the other Group B match, Marco Caneira's goal in the 64th lifted Sporting Libson over Inter Milan.
Group C is shaping up as the weakest in the Champions League with all four teams failing to score on Tuesday.
In Group D, Fernando Morientes scored three goals - in the 34th, 39th and second-half injury time - to lead Valencia to a 4-2 victory at Olympiakos. Raul Albiol scored the other for Valencia.
Michalis Konstantinou and Nery Castillo scored for Olympiakos.
In the other group game, Roma overwhelmed Shakhtar 4-0 on second-half goals by Rodrigo Taddei, Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, and David Pizarro.

A winner of five straight tournaments, Tiger Woods is a big favourite in the World Match Play Championship.
The Ryder Cup is another story.
"This year, we are definitely the underdogs," Woods said Tuesday as he embarked on a three-week run in England and Ireland."
He then interrupted a question to drive home his point.
"We are definitely the underdogs," he said.
Woods has history on his side, not to mention 11 teammates. Europe has won four of the last five Ryder Cups, an era of dominance that includes going home with the gold chalice seven of the last 10 times.
The world's No. 1 player will get ready by taking on a 16-man field at Wentworth for the HSBC World Match Play Championship, which features 36-hole matches each day in single elimination. His first opponent is former PGA champion Shaun Micheel.
After the Ryder Cup at The K Club outside Dublin, Woods returns to the London area for the American Express Championship, his next official PGA Tour event as he tries to match his six-tournament winning streak from late 1999 and early 2000.
"These will be three great weeks right in a row, and this week is wonderful preparation for the Ryder Cup next week," Woods said.

Mauresmo is now -145 at Pinny.
I just layed a little on Henin-Hardenne +110 to win it all, she'll beat Mauresmo in 3 sets.
Also took Davydenko -166 over Haas. Haas simply will be too tired after two five setters and now an early morning match, just too much for him.

Two months after losing the World Cup final to Italy, France beat the Italians 3-1 on Wednesday in a European Championship qualifier on Sidney Govou's two goals and one by Thierry Henry.
Govou scored in the second minute, and Henry added another in the 17th for his 37th international goal. Govou scored again in the 56th when he headed home Willy Sagnol's cross.
Alberto Gilardino scored for Italy in the 20th.
The animosity flowed from French fans toward Italy even before the match began. In the World Cup final, France star Zinedine Zidane was ejected for a head-butt to the chest of Italy's Marco Materazzi in extra time, and Italy won on penalty kicks.
Materazzi admitted this week he insulted Zidane's sister.
Despite pleas from France coach Raymond Domenech, fans began booing when the Italian national anthem started, but soon stopped. Later, with the win certain, some fans at Stade de France broke into chants of "Zizou, Zizou," in homage to the retired Zidane.
Materazzi missed the game under a two-game suspension for his role in the head-butting. Zidane was given a three-game suspension.
"The perfect match is where you score on every attack and where you are never in danger," Domenech said. "I have to admit we weren't far from the perfect match."
France has six points from two matches in Group B, behind Scotland on goal difference. Italy has only one point from its two matches.
Italy coach Roberto Donadoni conceded that France looked like the fitter team.
"We thought they might be a bit fresher and more lively than us," Donadoni said.
"We have beaten two World Cup winners in the last two months," said Domenech, referring to the World Cup quarter-final win over Brazil. "But what's more important is that we have distanced Italy by five points."
Domenech told his players not to get carried away by the win.
"Let's not think we have already qualified," Domenech said. "We need to stay calm. But if we win in Scotland, then we will be in a strong position in the group."
With two minutes gone, Henry sent the ball left to William Gallas and his dipping cross was volleyed into the corner of the net by Govou, who only started because Louis Saha was not fully fit.
"We knew Sidney would be ready and we had no worries about that," Domenech said.
Gianluca Zambrotta shot over the crossbar in the fifth minute as Italy sought a quick reply, but it was a rare attack.
"The next step will be very important," said Zambrotta. "We have to cancel out the negative result from tonight."
Henry ended a seven-game scoreless streak when he curled the ball under Gianluigi Buffon from 12 yards after the goalkeeper had blocked Florent Malouda's powerful shot.
With French fans singing, Italy quickly got a goal back when Gilardino was left unmarked to head in a free kick from Andrea Pirlo with goalkeeper Gregory Coupet stranded.

Kimi Raikkonen's Formula One options have dwindled down to two.
Renault, who had been rumored to be in talks with the Finn, have confirmed that countryman Heikki Kovalainen will partner Giancarlo Fisichella in 2007.
"I am thrilled to get the opportunity to race with a world champion team like Renault," said Kovalainen. "I have been a member of the Renault Driver Development programme since 2002, when I had the distant ambition of one day becoming an F1 driver.
"It is a fantastic feeling to have finally achieved that. My two seasons testing for the team, as well as my time in GP2, have allowed me to build my technical knowledge and to understand what it takes to win in Formula One. I have also had the opportunity to show the team what I can do, and it is a great motivation to know that they believe in me.
Kovalainen had been the team's test and reserve driver this year. Those duties will now be taken up by Brazilian's Ricardo Zonta and Nelson Piquet Jr.
Zonta joins the French team after four seasons with Toyota as their primary test driver. Piquet is the son of former three time world champion Nelson Piquet. He has spent the past two seasons competing in the GP2 series.
Renault also confirmed that Flavio Briatore will be back to lead the squad at least for another two years.
"I am delighted to continue to lead Renault's Formula One challenge," said Briatore. "I wanted to sign for two years because had it been 12 months, we would have been going through the same questions about my future in six months' time."
"It is now important for the Renault F1 Team to begin a fresh cycle of development from 2007, with a reinvigorated driver line-up and several significant new commercial partners. This is the key to performing at the top level in the medium and long term."
Renault's decision leaves only Ferrari and McLaren as the top teams who have yet to finalize their 2007 driver lineup.
Ferrari are set to unveil their lineup this weekend at Monza and with Renault out of the picture, it's widely anticipated that Raikkonen will join the Scuderia next season. Whether or not he will line up alongside Michael Schumacher is still a hot topic of debate.
According to the German publication Bild, Schumacher will announce his retirement following Sunday's race. The newspaper did not give any source for its information while Schumacher's manager and spokesperson refused to comment on the report.

German newspaper Bild reports that Formula One driver Michael Schumacher will announce his retirement at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The newspaper gave no source for its report.
The seven-time champion, who holds every major record in Formula One, had previously said he would announce a decision on his future at the race.
"We can't comment on everything. As we said, there will be more on Sunday," Schumacher spokeswoman Sabine Kehm told the paper.
Ferrari officials already said last week that they would make an announcement on their 2007 driver lineup after the Italian Grand Prix.
Speculation has been rampant most of the year that Kimi Raikkonen will leave McLaren to join the Scuderia next season. Whether or not the Finn will be paired with seven time champion Michael Schumacher has also been the hot topic of debate.
Schumacher has been urged by his manager to retire, especially if he manages to win his eighth world title. Ferrari officials have said the German has a standing invitiation to return.
Schumacher's contract with Ferrari expires at the end of this season. He trails defending F1 champion and current leader Fernando Alonso by 12 points in the standings with four races remaining.
