Uh, ...
More goals than the other team. Whether it is at the end of regulation, extra time, or penalty kicks. |

Oh yeah, I should point out I had no money on the game.
Supposedly, I was watching for the pure enjoyment of the sport. |

That Spain-Sweden game was a perfect example of why this sport will never be overly popular in North America. The two worst things about soccer happened in this game:
1) Sweden ties the game 1-1 in the 34th minute and then proceeds to play to "not lose". Rather than try to carry some momentum to a possible win, they set themselves to play defense the rest of the game. There was almost 60 minutes left for crying out loud! I'm glad they were unsuccessful and Spain won. They did nothing to even deserve a tie after the they scored. 2) The complete unwillingness of the referees to call a foul in the box. At the end of the first half, that Swedish guy OBVIOUSLY fouled the Spanish guy and there was no call. The guy didn't even make a play for the ball, in fact, his back was to the ball. What has to happen to get a foul in there? Decapitation? After that 34th minute this game was simply painful to watch. |

The final minutes of a soccer game would be impossible to watch and the game would certainly lose its popularity. Just my opinion. That's a good point, but it is not insurmountable. First substitutions can be made on the fly like in hockey, which makes the most sense since the game is continuous. It never made much sense to me that they stop the game just to let someone into the game. Certainly, no one could complain about about being able to make as many subs as you wish at halftime. And if unlimited is still too many then there has to be a better "happy medium" than to only get two fresh bodies into the game for each side. |

Whereas the flopping is quite annoying, I think the main reason soccer does not gain more acceptance in the USA and Australia is because of the pace of the game and the low scoring.
Speaking as an American, I suspect we as a culture tend to like our games to be faster pace with more scoring. That being said there are a number of things soccer can do to improve its pacing and getting rid of flopping isn't one of them. I think the number one positive addition they can make to the game would be to allow unlimited substitutions. Keeping fresh guys out there at all times would improve the pace of the game immeasurably. As an aside, the European mentality of going into a game with the sole purpose of "not losing", that is, implementing a defensive strategy to play for penalty kicks is very unlike Americans. We tend to have a more "go down swinging" mentality if we feel we're facing a stronger opponent. |

I was watching a lot of games on channelsurfing.net, but they seemed to have stopped playing the video feeds and only have the NBA.com audio feeds.
Does anyone know of any other site which is playing the video feeds? Thanks! |
