@Biscuiteater1 Biscuit---Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely not blaming Lamar per se. What I think I saw was a team doing exactly what you said---getting away from a game plan which, WHEN they could stick with it, made the Ravens the best team in the NFL. However, I think once they got down 2 scores, with the threat of Mahomes always looming to make it a near impossible 3 scores, the best regular season NFL team got away from what made them the best. They knew every possession was critical. They had put up only 7 points in the first three quarters, with nothing in the crucial third. So, down two scores and still only 7 that you've been able to put on the board. What are your options ? At some point, the fact that they themselves managed to possess the ball only 9:21 in the entire first half----as a running team no less----- starts to tighten their collective collars. Difficult NOT to abandon your established success plan at some point in favor of a quick score. So, no, I do not put it all on Lamar. I do put it on a decision to commit to a less multi-dimensional style of play that narrows your chances of winning when you're forced to play from behind, which is hardly a rarity in the playoffs.

Sac and Huge--Hard to quarrel with facts, particularly those presented by two guys with proven track records on football intelligence. It may be that I just think teams that rely too much on the running quarterback have proven to be easier to defend in the playoffs. I watched the Bears a lot last year and they looked like a team that was getting very close to nasty. And now, with some seemingly astute off season moves, I think they are going to make noise this season. Obviously, how much noise will depend on how the QB decision works out. But I don't think they will suck regardless of the choice. I thought Fields left a lot to be desired last year. I think he is more Lamar than Mahomes. And while Lamar is one of a kind, and with all due respect to Hugh's illegitimate son, I think Harbaugh's all-in decision on him will never win a Super Bowl. I think their playoff loss to the Chiefs magnified the problem of falling behind in a playoff game with a team built to rely so much on a quarterback-led running offense in today's NFL. You could almost feel the panic on the Ravens sideline as they went down two scores, watched KC run clock and began to understand how precious each possession was going to be if they failed. In a 17 game season, and getting back to Biscuit's RSW question, I think 9-8 is a touch pessimistic for this year's Bear's. Sac is the man when it comes to the Bears, but I'll stick with my 9.5, juiced a touch to punish the Under bettors. |

I admit I do wonder how many "farewells" one gets before it becomes the last farewell. I'm old, but it is confusing. |

@Biscuiteater1 Obviously, there is little point to making an RSW prediction right now because so much is yet to happen. However, if my mother forced me to do so, looking at their schedule and guessing they will have a green, young and NFL untested QB, I'll set the number at a probably aspirational 9.5. What do you think ? |

@osubucks1 That is where the smart money is and I hope the Bears get it right. NFL fans need franchises like the Lions and Bears to be competitive and in the conversation as good teams. The core of a very good team is already there. |

Maybe. Now the Bears have to pick the right replacement for the woeful Justin Fields. Are we sure who it is ? I'd be worried about the southern California guy. |

@Biscuiteater1 Biscuit, my friend---I appreciate that very much. I really don't need people to agree with me but I have had respect for you from the Dirt Newsletter for a very long time. You are one of the people I enjoy the most, bantering back and forth with other ClubDirt Newsletter legends. You also don't need anyone agreeing with you. You speak your mind. You, Hugh, Getty, Wreck,Hank, Sac and so many others know how to keep the Dirt Newsletter not just alive, but a vibrant and special place in the universe. Best wishes for the off season, my friend. |

Friends I must be missing something. I'm old and cranky, so forgive me, but I will say I'm mystified by what I'm seeing : the ClubDirt Newsletter should be over for the year. Club's Newsletter was about football --pro football. Out of respect, stop it. Unless I'm wrong, the tradition was that the Super Bowl ended it for the year. Then we would anxiously wait for whenever Club decided we should start looking at the next season. It is unrecognizable right now. Christmas loses its special meaning if it goes on every day. My favorite people continued the Newsletter when Club left, and I'm eternally grateful for that. But we should know when to stop. Please, it's gone on long enough. If you want to discuss other sports with our favorite posters contributing, fine. Name the thread after the Organ; or Getty; or Sac, who has become the non-stop information center for all of us and who single-handedly has me rooting for the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Freaking Bears!!! FuKK you Sac. I know I'm on the Spockgato thread so I'll just end with this : Spock-- please don't join those moderators. Some were normal before becoming Stepford Wives. Fresh Air ? Your insane, stream of consciousness posts have become like an Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani at-bat. NOT TO BE MISSED. Why would you join them ? Please, give us another year at least before they maim your beautiful brain. Respectfully, Ken |

@trainwreck66 Really enjoy what you bring to the table. The Newsletter is replete with extremely intelligent and bold football fans that together provide more worthwhile information than all the paid touts could ever dream of. And where else can you find the extremely high and extremely low level humor ? Nowhere. Not at all embarrassed to say I look forward to the next issue as much as the next NFL season. |

I enjoy the Newsletter for many reasons. One of those is that I want one of "our" teams to win it all. So, who am I rooting for to have great off-seasons aside from these teams I have quietly been rooting for : Jaguars Cowboys Ravens Bears Chargers If you're a Jets fan, don't be afraid to admit it. With the permission of the ClubDirt Newsletter Elders, I'm going to start a pool next year to see who will be out early and who lasts the longest. ( It's more or less the kind of contest you don't want to have among friends and their wives ). Best wishes to all the contributors to the Newsletter. As someone who was recovering the entire football season from a very challenging medical situation, I can't thank you all enough for your insights, insults and entertainment. May God bless you and all your loved ones until we begin again. |

I'll probably go to 2-3 games this year myself. A good friend has season tickets ( elbows on the dugout ), purchased through his best friend, Larry Lucchino, back when Lucchino built Camden Yards. Lucchino doesn't get enough credit for revolutionizing the look of baseball parks, starting with Baltimore.(He also built Petco and did the major renovations of Fenway.) I'm not an O's fan, but I go when they play the Yankees or Red Sox.
