Because some people's pay raise will put them above the maximum for receiving housing subsidies and other welfare benefits, they are asking for reduced hours so they can stay on welfare.
It's not like fiscal conservatives haven't talked about people wanting a hand out, but this blows the liberal theory out of the water.
There are a lot of people out there that do not want to work, no matter how many times you libs say otherwise.
So those welfare recipients will skate along, work as few hours as they please, and the taxpayer will pick up the tab.
But no need to listen to me. You can read all about it in Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals"

You were taught values by both of your parents. Have you ever considered yourself blessed or do you just judge people with less values than you?
Didn't the army pay for your education? I know a lot of people that completely misuse the benefits they receive from the GI bill and they're costing the taxpayers a boatload of money. Should we get rid of the GI bill?

A minority of welfare recipients may prefer to not work such as the disabled and mothers with children. However the majority prefer working income. Since welfare pays less and is temporary, working income is the best way to escape poverty in the long term.

No clue at all what this is supposed to mean?? Your opinion on the way it should be or the way you hope it the way you truly think it is? Any studies to show anything like this?

Your suggestion is that the benefits that a soldier gets are equivalent and equally earned as welfare for civilians?
How have you seen GI bill money misused. You do understand that the stipend provided is a form of payment, not an entitlement for subsistence?

There is a lot of waste associated with the GI bill. That's a fact Jack. The GI bill has paid for 1 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to go to school. How many have graduated? Nobody knows. How many are using their degrees today? Nobody knows.
Spending on the GI bill is estimated at around $50 billion.
Read this link and then tell me if you think there is any waste associated with the GI bill.

"Today(2014), there are close to 950,000 pre- and post-9/11 veterans in education and job training programs at a cost of more than $10 billion a year. Over the next few years, one million men and women will leave military service and will be eligible for educational benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which provides for a significant part of tuition, fees and books and offers an allowance for living expenses."
Why can't they go to school and work to cover their living expenses?
How many of these veterans actually fought in a war?

On top of the GI bill ... The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonprofit D.C.-based think tank, estimates that as many as 340,000 veterans rely on federal or state rental assistance. About 900,000 veterans live on food stamps, and an additional 5,000 active-duty service members are food stamp recipients.

And yet, the benefits flow lavishly. While on active duty, I received medical care without any premiums or co-pays, a substantial housing allowance, a small stipend for food, and a base salary that by today’s pay scale would be $5,168 a month.
Once I joined the Reserves, I started out receiving what today would be $11,000 annually for two days of drill per month and 13 days of active duty per year. That increased to $17,600 when I retired in 2001.
This year I paid just $550 for family medical insurance. In the civilian sector, the average family contribution for health care in 2013 was $4,565
In this time of excessive expenditures for government pensions, wouldn’t a very small decrease in pay to military retirees be reasonable, particularly during the period of their lives when they are fully capable of civilian employment?

Detox: I am grateful my parents taught me values but I still believe in free will. I grew up middle class at best. The reason I talked about joining the military in prior threads is because my parents couldn't afford to send me to college. They helped out but I received tuition exemption and a monthly GI Bill for all that we endure when joining the military.
I had friends that grew up in the same neighborhood as me and friends that I went to school with that made different choices. Some of them are either in prison or have served time.
Do you believe in free will or do you think our fates are determined while we are in the womb?
Third Person A lot of people are working jobs and still getting welfare but when their job cuts into their free money they are going to work less. If I could make X number of dollars without doing nothing I would too.

canovsp has leached FAR more from the system then I ever will. I have never received $1.00. I never attended public schools and either I or my parents always paid for my health care.
He is ALWAYS judging people that receive assistance and somehow thinks that government assistance is what's wrong with this country.
Do you know what the biggest problem is in the United States of America? GREED! Greed is the number one problem. When this country goes into a recession, it is because of greed. If this country goes into a depression, greed will be the cause. If this country ever crumbles, greed will be the cause.
Banks and big corporations. They are the problem. They always have been and they always will be. They big wigs are so intelligent they have most of this country thinking that the person that doesn't have anything is the problem.

I wouldn't. I guess that's the difference between me and you. Another difference is that if you did receive $X without doing anything to earn it, I wouldn't think that you were a problem in this great country.
I am proud of the ambition that I have. I'm grateful for the way I was raised. I'm grateful for the values that were instilled in me.
If everyone had the same values, what would I be grateful for? If everyone had the same ambition, how could I be proud of my ambition?

I know your disdain for the military is the reason you call me a leech. Thankfully, most Americans disagree with you.

Raising the min wage to solve problems is a fools method. Not only does it cost in number of jobs down the road, but it further widens the gap between poor people and goods and services.
If raising the wage is a good idea then why not raise it to $100 per hour? That should be even better no?

Why would we lose jobs? How does it widen the gap?

Raising the minimum wage is inflationary. it's essentially a gimmick that will just cause e'ers to raise the wages of other employees and then raise the prices they charge customers. We do need stronger unions however the unions must share some of the blame for the waning influence. The pendulum has swung to the extent that something has to be done to address the widening gap between rich and poor.

The whole basis for this problem is the contention that minimum wage jobs should provide a living wage. That is incorrect. That is not what those jobs are.
People long for others to have a good living. Same thing with the housing debacle. Some folks just are lifelong renters. Etc etc.

Yes raise the minimum wage and STOP subsidizing corporations "Yes raise the minimum wage and STOP subsidizing corporations think about the low-income people who contribute to the quality of our lives in ways we never see. They're preparing meals for their kids at schools, they're daycare workers or hospital orderlies etc etc etc. Social Security is the only thing they can count on in retirement." And they can't even count on that thanx to Raygun,Clinton & Booosh who helped pillage it for a couple Trillion.

You raise the mim. wage by fiat and not as a function of increased production and Mr. robber baron is paying more for same output. This increase of mim wage is then a tax and inflationary. That which is taxed is discouraged ,so Mr robber baron increases the product price to cover the increase of taxation or he eliminates the source of the tax(reduce labor).
