"To be honest" (I hate using that term) I adopted a non interventionist way of thinking semi recently so it is still something I am trying to work out the boundries.
First, I believe charity starts at home. Once you and yours are taken care of then you can go about helping others in need of a helping hand up. However it should not be a crutch to create nanny states and become a continuous drain on our resources. Currently we have some major issues within our own borders that need to be addressed and fixed first before we toss cash at other countries issues.
Lets talk foreign aid. How effecient is it really being utilized? My guess is that it is primarily being wasted lining the pockets of politicians, dictators and warlords but I am sure it does some good.
I realize the government budget is a lot more complex than a personal budget but the same basic principles should apply. We are borrowing money without the capacity or intention of paying it back yet we continue to overspend, waste, allow blatant corruption and give billions of dollars to other countries. Common sense in our government was thrown out the window a long time ago and seems like it will never return.
How much sense does it make to "aid" both sides of a conflict i.e.
Israel vs. Hamas. How much sense does it make to borrow money increasing
our debt and then give it away? Cut all foreign aid but we can help on an individual basis and/or needs but only IF we are stable enough to do so as in a balanced budget and financial surplus.
Natural disasters of course IF we have the means we should aid whoever is in need.
Civil wars/border disputes stay out of it. Same with trying to install our personal choice of governments stop meddling in other peoples problems. We can't keep our sh!t together let alone the cluster fuqs we create trying to "help" other countries.
Beating a dead horse we can no longer be the police of the world or the sugar daddies to impoverished countries. We have created too many nanny states. Call me naive but they need to learn to stand on their own and if they can't make so be it. Basic law of nature, only the strong survive and the weak get culled.
As far as assisting TRUE Allies depends on the situation. Hypothetically if Canada initiates an attack on Greenland for no reason other than just being a holes than Canada should stand on their own. But if Greenland decides to invade Canada for their personal evil gains then yes we should probably assist them in their DEFENSE. I know conflicts are a lot more complicated than that.
We should maintain a strong DEFENSE and unleash unholy hell on whoever decides to take a shot at us.
As far as Iraq is concerned, like I said as much as I don't want to get involved I feel it is our responsibility now since we personally destroyed that whole region and turned a bad situation into a complete disaster. My problem is what can we do to actually stabilize that region? Our little bombing runs going on today are not doing much. I have no answers on how to fix it but we are responsible now. Other than trying to sweep through the country again and wipe out ISIS but look how well that worked out the last time. It is a lose lose situation.
I am sure this will get ripped apart but I am tired of the status quo. We keep doing the same things expecting different results and it is not working. We may be a super power but our power is starting to wane, we need to get our sh1t together before it is too late.
