First, under pressure from Alfonse D'Amato and his Poker Players Alliance, the Republican Party stripped the opposition to internet gambling from its official party platform.
But then, under pressure from right-wing zealots, they decided today to flip-flop from that flip-flop and re-inserted the language back into their platform.
Ahhhh, we were on the cusp of an American society where the government doesn't intrude into our homes, but the right-wing nut-jobs couldn't live with that.
So here we are again.
The part that I find most infuriating is this quote from the story:
"The full 112-member platform committee acted on pleas that Internet gambling victimizes poor people and children.
“Internet gambling represents the most invasive and addictive form of gambling in our history,” said Kendal Unrah of Colorado, who sponsored the amendment."
Uh... no it isn't. Not even close.
You know, in the past I have flirted with the idea of supporting the Republicans (yes, I know I'm not American, but I do have a soapbox), but it is shit like this that makes me wonder how ANYBODY can support a party that believes and perpetuates lies like this.
Hey! You guys in the "Politics" forum who spend all day bashing Obama and re-printing articles from Republican blogs... Tell me, how can YOU support this?

No. No. No. Let's humor him and respond as he would...

I guess that means you are pro organized crime and don't believe that a multi-billion dollar American casino industry would be able to compete against the likes of Bodog - a company that is currently tripping over its own feet.

Exactly how can creating a $15 billion industry, along with its associated taxes and revenues, be considered outsourcing American jobs?
If anything, it would increase America's competitive strength by diverting those funds away from foreign companies and back into the American economy.
But no - you go ahead and keep believing that whatever is in the Republican platform must be correct.
I'm not sure... does that platform include language that says the world is 3000 years old too?

Now, we ALL KNOW that Party Platforms disappear once the conventions are over and the election has been decided. I agree with what KOAJ said above. I have been doing "illegal" gambling all my life and will continue if I have to, there are other things more important. Neither Party will state they are pro-gambling whether they are or not. The Bible Belt extends a long way across the country. (Except in California, they say ?que Bible?)

Platforms disappear once conventions are over....hmmmmm
Who put the platform in there to begin with. Party leaders or rank and file members of the Republican Party?
Who slipped in the Unlawful Gaming Act into another bill, that was eventually passed into law? Party leaders or rank and file members of the Republican Party?
Was Bill Frist a party leader or a rank and file member of the Republican Party?
Continue to bury your heads in the sand voters. The Republicans know what they want and your individual liberties aren't part of their platform.

I think it should be U.S controlled and they tax the hell out of it. Look at all of the revenue that's being lost. I am so damn sick and tired of the goverment telling me how I shoud run my life. I work hard for my money, if I want to place a F'ing wager on a team that should be my right. Just as it should be thier right to tax it. I have no problem with that. But it's ok if you play bingo at your local chruch or it's ok to have a lottery, two things that take no skill at all. That gambling is ok, but gambling or something that does take skill is not ok. That just show you the complete ignorance we are dealing with. Ok, I am finished now.
