The New Jersey Nets have started much better this season than in 2009, as it took them up until December 8 last season to pick up their second win. They will face a stiff road challenge Friday as they face the championship hopeful Magic.
The main key to New Jersey’s strong play thus far has been their solid defense, allowing only 96 point a game which ranks 9th in the league. The new faces for New Jersey are already starting to contribute, with Derrick Favors, Jordan Farmar, and Anthony Morrow each in the top five on the team in scoring. Devin Harris and Brook Lopez continue to be the main pieces around which this squad will build upon, as the two are averaging a combined 41 points per game. Troy Murphy has only been in the lineup once thus far for the Nets (back) and looked rusty against the Bobcats with only two points and two rebounds.
Even with the 2-1 start, Orlando can’t be pleased will how the season has begun as they were crushed in their matchup with the Heat in what has been their only tough game thus far. The Magic dominated their other two opponents by 29 and 42 points respectively, and thanks to Dwight Howard have owned the board as they rank first in the NBA in rebounding. Orlando has had a very balancing scoring attack, with surprising contributors Ryan Anderson and Brandon Bass each averaging double figures. Rashard Lewis has really struggled in the first three games, shooting only 31 percent and 17 percent from threes.
New Jersey is much improved from last season, and have assembled some small pieces that should make them a very competitive team and perhaps a playoff contender. But Orlando is still fuming from being embarrassed by Miami, so look for them to continue to take it out on inferior teams and do so by putting up a lot of points.

Dont sleep on the Nets backcourt, Young and Athletic and Brook Lopez keeps Howard neutralized. That being said Nets cover the number. Magic by 10
I wouldn't bank that just yet with Harris injured and Orlando rejuvenated, going 15 of 31 from 3-point range against the Timberwolves, routing Minnesota 128-86 on Wednesday, & setting a franchise record for points in a first half with 78. They are fired up right now nad the Nets are playing so so losing their last 2.
While Orlando knows it won't be able to put up those types of offensive numbers all season, it could have another big game against a New Jersey team that has struggled since beating Detroit and Sacramento to open 2010-11.
