West Virginia has had an up and down year, but they've won three straight and need this win to keep their BCS bowl hopes alive. (If favored South Florida beats Connecticut Saturday night in Tampa and WVU beats Rutgers Saturday afternoon, WVU goes to the BCS bowl - probably the Fiesta.) Rutgers has had an up then down year, losing the five games since player Eric Legrand was paralyzed vs. Army. The Knights covered only one game in the stretch. They were beaten badly at home last week by Louisville, ensuring that they wouldn't go to a bowl game for the first time in several years.
Rutgers has been outscored 109-51 in its last two games, and has only one win in the Big East, vs. Connecticut, the week prior to the Legrand injury. They're done for the year.

West Virginia has had their chances to lock up a Big East title and a BCS berth but a two game skid to UConn and and Syracuse means WVU needs to win and they need help to go to a BCS game. The Mountaineers have won three in a row including a convincing pounding of Pittsburgh last week as they haven't allowed more than 10 points in any of their last three games. While there is some disappointment in Bill Stewart, a win will help his cause. Geno Smith has played well at QB completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,215 yards with 22 touchdown passes and six interceptions. Noel Devine plays hos last home game and this season he's rushed for 855 yards and six touchdowns. Jock Sanders and Tavon Austin are one of the better tandems in the country with Sanders grabbing 58 passes for 589 yards and four touchdowns and Austin catching 47 passes for 636 yards and seven scores. The West Virginia defense is one of the best in the nation and it was an interception that went the distance last week against Pittsburgh that gave West Virginia the early lead and set the tone for a win in the Backyard Brawl. For the season West Virginia is averaging 25.9 points and 363.3 yards per game while the defense is allowing 12.6 points and 255.7 yards.
Greg Schiano has had his toughest season since taking over the Rutgers program as his team has gone backwards and they are mired in a losing streak. Rutgers has lost five games in a row and while they have put points on the board, the defense hasn't been able to keep it together, something surprising given Schiano's background as a defensive coordinator. Chas Dodd has taken over at QB completing 55.4 percent of his passes for 1,498 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. It's been a mixed bag in the Knights backfield with Jordan Thomas rushing for 354 yards and Jeremy Deering rushing for 332 yards. Mohamed Sanu does it all for Rutgers offensively playing every position and passing for 160 yards and three touchdowns, running for 309 yards and four touchdowns, and catching 42 passes for 404 yards and two touchdowns. Mark Harrison has 412 catches for 763 yards and eight touchdowns. The Scarlett Knights defense has been shredded the last two games allowing 69 points to Cincinnati and 40 to Louisville last week.
West Virginia is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games as a home favorite, 7-2 against the spread in their last nine Big East games, and 1-7 against the spread in their last eight games as a home favorite of 10.5 points or more. Rutgers is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight road games against a team with a winning home record, 1-4 against the spread in their last five Big East games, and 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games as a road underdog. The road team has covered five in a row in this series and the underdog has covered five of the last seven.
West Virginia will try and let their Seniors score points and put on a show and the way Rutgers hasn't even thought about tackling lately, they shouldn't have much problem. On the other side I think Rutgers opens up the offense in a big way and is able to put something up especially as Bill Stewart makes sure every Senior hits the field. I think the play here is the over as at 44 1/2 it looks like a fairly easy number to exclipse.

Man, it's worth a small play on Rutgers. That's a lot of points and one thing I've learned about college ball this year......expect the unexpected. If N Ill can get beat by Miami after averaging 65 points a game over the last three weeks and being undefeated in conference play and being one of the best teams in the country ATS, then Rutgers can stay within three tds.

This is just one of those teams people are stuck on, because they used to be so F'n explosive on offense. Those days are gone.....starting of in a 21pt hole when you struggle to score 30pts is an uphill climb, to say the least.

Wow! Its worse than I thought......take out the UNLV game, where they scored 49pts.....because UNLV blows, and they have scored:
35, 17, 37, 13, 14, 20, 14, 13, 24
How can a team scoring like this be laying 21 pts at kickoff......that is a REAL uphill climb. They will need some bounces to go their way to cover this one.
Here's hoping they pitch a shutout today......you're gonna need it.

They were 21 better than UNLV earlier this season, 21 better vs. Cincy three weeks ago, and 21 better last week at Pitt... Just saying. I think the play here is the over.

Rutgers +21 or 21.5
Lock it up.....big play.
You make a good point from purely a statistical angle but sometimes it's about effort right.
And I think the consensus here is that Rutgers won't put forth any.
I'm on WV as well, even though I got burned by NIU yesterday.

This is shaping up to be one of those weeks where Vegas is just TAKING it to the public. It happens about 2 weeks a year, where all the underdogs come in. And it hasn't happened much this year.
After last night....two outright wins by underdogs.....that has to send up a red flag.

What's your favorite part about watching Bill Stewart coach a football game?:
1. The constant confused squint.
2. The way he plays with his microphone up and down, even though its not even connected to the offensive coordinator's headset. (This guy has about as much of a chance as adding offensive insight as I do.)
Man.....its a coin toss.......but we're 1 hour away from kickoff, and I can already visualize the confused squint......I think I have to go with #1.

West Virginia, though, needs a win over the Scarlet Knights combined with a Huskies loss to South Florida later in the day to gain the conference's berth to a BCS bowl.
