First thing that stood out was where the spread opened. Detroit+8.5 @betonline, usually the first book to open lines.
In their last meeting on Dec 31, @ Detroit, the spread was +5.5...where's the flip of homecourt? Detroit lost that game by 13 points btw. If you give a home court advantage of 3 to 3.5 points, shouldn't the spread opened more like 11.5 or 12.5?
The Books know what's up. I've watched the Mercy's last 3 games and they are not playing like a 4-14 team. First year head coach Bacari Alexander clearly had a rough start to the season. Detroit is in a rebuild mode and they are fairly young.
So he installed a full court press just 3 games ago and the results are showing. They played Valpo(the cream of the crop in the Horizon) in Valpo, hanging tough losing by 7 as 17 pt dogs. Then they went to Oakland as 18 pt dogs and won by 5. This has always been a big rivalry game so I took it with a grain of salt. Next game they beat Youngstown State by 17 as 4 pt favs at home.
These kids are having fun, they play with a "nothing to lose" attitude. Junior Forward Jaleel Hogan is a straight up baller. He's 6'7 but plays like 6'9 around the rim. He's been drawing double teams lately and he's quick to dish out the ball when they do. He can stop and pop from 15 or drive into the paint where he draws plenty fouls.
Wright State will be with out starting guard Mark Hughes. Now they'll use a backup ball handler against a press that they DID NOT face last time. Hughes played in their last meeting. The Mercy lead the Horizon in forced turnovers at 113, and lead in turnover margin at +3.1 since the start of conference play.
Wright State has had more assists than turnovers only 3 times in their last 12 games.
Wright State just beat Wisc-Milwaukee by 3 on the road. Can't say that's impressive, I think that Wisc-Mil team is fairly poor. Before that they lost to a good Wisc-GB team by 17 as 5.5 dogs...shoulda done better? And before that, they lost to Youngstown state by 15 where they were favored by 9...the same team Detroit just beat by 16.
