I realize that covers does not hold every answer out there with respect to betting. However, there seem to be some extremely knowledgeable and smart bettors here. With that my question is would anyone care to share how they began their betting careers?
Just to let whoever responds understand where I am beginning I began with 25 dollars and am now at 785. Thing is I have a seriously difficult time pulling the trigger on some bets. In the end this is a betting site and if no one decides to chime in I completely understand. Most people are here to win money and nothing more. Thanks for the responses as I know dealing with relatively new bettors is never a fun thing.

I have the same problem with pulling the trigger, I am going to attempt to overcome the putting it into action problem with just making much smaller bets for games that I have a decent lean on, cause as you probably know we sit around and look at these plays when they come in and say, I had that but didnt pull the trigger, so yeah, thats how I am starting to combat the why didnt I play that game thing. interesting you built a nice little roll with 25 how long did that take? What sports you cappin? I am trying to make a couple friends as well. Friend me if you like, I am still trying to learn how to use this website for optimum edge.

If you did your research and truly believe you got it right, you have to play it. Your not gonna win all the time and only bet as much as you can afford to lose.

Also, don't blindly follow some guy just because he's on a hot streak. Make your own decisions. Most guys on here aren't really betting anyway. Talk a lot of crap and guess for a lot of their picks. The biggest bet they ever made was when they came here to Vegas and put $5 on the Falcons to win it all.

Allhelpplease - I generally bet on over unders that have to do with nba quarters and college halftimes. I have noticed there are some definite trends that take place based on what happens early in a game. As one poster said in a response you aren't going to win them all but I like the trends enough to keep betting them.
I would like to add friends on here who are good with discussing things such as trends and not just here to complain about how their picks went awry. I believe in the power of statistics and trends although they change from time to time. Overall I think there are signs to follow when betting and the more I do it the better I feel about it. Thanks for the responses and great advice on just betting, not blindly following, and moving forward with it all.

Nscfsu-I think that one of the most intelligent bets is a college basketball half-time bet....especially in your position. The reason-because you sound very disciplined. Your window of opportunity is short, the line may change quickly, and you sometimes have literally seconds to make your decision. You sound like the kind of level headed person that can walk away if you don't think it's right. Sometimes people feel forced to place a pick because they invested the first half....I call it free entertainment. If you don't get that positive feeling then walk away; there's other games. The great advantage is that you get to see the teams play. That's what I like. I also keep track of bad plays, lucky plays, refs plays, bad breaks,etc... And that goes into my thoughts for the second half. I can see how you built your roll up to where it is...and that's one big thing that you have-discipline. Congratulations.

Tnvols - I honestly prefer over under betting over all other types only because I would much rather hope for makes or misses than for a team to cover. The DePaul game yesterday reminded me why I rarely take teams to cover. Anyhow I agree with you on free entertainment. At the same time when you are watching a game you get a feel for how it Will unfold. I always feel like I have an advantage if I get to watch the college or pro game.
Anyhow tonight I am going to take it as it goes like always. I tend to look for awful quarters or halfs or amazing quarters or halfs because they tell us a lot about what may be coming. I also use the original over under line in all my decisions. There are Times where the line gives you a great shot as to what will happen. A good example tends to be found in awful first halfs of college games. If two teams combine for 30-35 in the first half don't expect them to put up 65 in the second. These are college kids and they are either good or bad on a given night. Its not like the nba where they can call 50 fouls and change the game.

You wrote, you would like to add friends, DONT and stik to what you are doing. Your in it for 2 things, the excitment/challenge and the money. How long did it take to raise that amount. It is important if it were 1 month or 1 year.
Obviously you have a good thing going and dont share it with anyone ! Consider 90% slime out here, and the slimyist want your picks and your money.
I been doing it since my dad gave me a football card when I was 10 / 1975... Only a hobby and over the past years I got good at Golf and Football, actually building a good bankroll...
For years I bet the horses, slots, etc. and lost some, but never continued on really hard...
Sold the old cards too fro a long time at different jobs, so that made money.... Overall probably above even because I always quit when I hit big, slot, or long shot trifecta, etc...
Keep building a bankroll and hope that it goes legal in 5 years or so. Then you can do it legit and get rich, building on that same money... Wouldn't that be awesome... in 10 years you have 100K and making 1000.00 a week on it.... 20 years you have 5M because

I guess California is really pushing for the internet portion to go legal although there are some roadblocks. I am sure it Will be legal in the near future purely based on the monetary side of it all.
Thank you for the advice. I don't want to add friends who offer picks, I prefer those who will discuss games and such more so than telling me who to bet. For example I can give a pretty good gauge of Fresno state because that's where I went to college and I watch them often. I would never say make this bet for sure but I can tell you if the bulldogs will struggle or not on a given night. That's more so what my goal is and hope others out there look for the same.

I agree with the 2H bets. A lot of these teams that hold big leads collapse in the second half. Another stat to check on is FT%. The majority of teams are probably below 70% every night, so if you can side with a team that you cant trust down the stretch, that helps. Another helper for 2H is home teams. If they are down and at home, its a pretty good bet to make. Even close games at home, I'll take the home team almost every time, depending on the matchup. You got to think about these guys making runs and having their crowds roar behind them. It helps big time.

Congrats on building a solid roll from just 25 bucks. Unlike you, I have built my bank roll from 100 dollar deposits and built it to close to 800 dollars in a span of 2-3 weeks just to blow it all due to poor money management.
Didn't help that my brother lost 80% of my roll on online black jack a week ago (had my acct info). So I have to start all over again, starting at 100 dollars tonight. It's going to suck making 10 dollar bets again but it's humbling at the same time.
Curious as to how long it took you to build that kind of bank roll? Especially by only making over and under bets. (I'm god awful in totals)

Dreamkillas - I track my bets with an excel spreadsheet daily. So right now I am on day 22. I came up with a plan where the bets are only 5 percent thanks to some advice from aggiebasketball.
On a side note I did this once before and went from 25 to 1100 in about a month and a half. However I was infatuated with overs at the time and lost 700 in one day. I have vowed to stay away from overs and large bets from here on because of that. So all my bets are of the same increment and even if I only make 30-40 in a day over the long haul it will help. I know a lot of you do this for a living but I don't so it's just a side thing to hopefully make a little extra to buy things for around the house and such.

]I have been chatting online since 1996 via AOL - over 30 men meeting women and never ever have I found a completely honest person. Some of those women would post a pick and then you would go to a group meet and YUK..
Same thing here, take every post with a grain of salt and consider everyone out to gain. I mean, do you think you could really have a good conversation on here about a gamble ? Maybe, and a little, good reads, etc. But oyu have to be picky....

That's true it is hard to trust people. I give credit to those who put their picks up because if I did that and lost I would feel pretty bad for leading anyone astray. At the same time it seems the minute I put a pick up its destined to fail where as if I keep them to myself I do ok. I mean I am no world beater here but failure tends to happen when I post anything to do with a game. I wonder if others experience the same thing?

I actually just went in and designed my own. I could look around and see if there are any but mine is pretty basic. It's just a way to control betting and remember what your goals are by writing it down daily.

Definitely feel the same way. I always feel like if I make a post about a game I am on, it is destine to lose. Just makes me feel like a big jinx. Not saying I win most of the time if I don't post, but just feels like if I draw any attention to the game I am on, odds are I'm going to lose. It's all in my head, but that's what gambling does to ya!!

In a previous life (another screen name), many years ago I used to post NFL MNF & ncaa fb thur night games. I used my dog "MAX" as a joke to pick my plays; kinda like "clucko" does. We were on fyre and went something like 11 straight wins.... then I lost 3 in a row. I got blitzed on this site and worse still, I lost my betting edge and couldn't pick a winner to save my (_o_). Well I quit posting and quickly returned to profitability. I just had to quit posting plays. It stressed me more that others might have lost tailing me than actually losing my own money... Think about that????
Sorry to bust into your thread, I just could not resist posting response to that post

I just laugh at the haters....it's free entertainment and they never stress me out....I just laugh and laugh. It was their choice to follow...plus I always say everything is 1%, which for me equals 1 unit of MY roll, not yours...plus it's none of your buisness how much money I have...none, and I don't need to know yours. I just put my picks out....take em or leave em....your choice. Oh, and I always respect one who posts their TRUE record...people, please put your record out there!!! It helps out alot.

Wow, didn't think it was possible to have an ADULT conversation on Covers over the past couple of years Great thread gentlemen, as I actually read each comment and found validity and agreeance to everyone's comments It's nice to be able to read an educated thread with great examples, experiences shared by all.

I appreciate everyone's responses in this thread. We are all looking to do the same thing here which is winning at betting. I have to admit although I have done decent of late this is one of the hardest things I have ever taken on.
I feel like we should be able to have intelligent conversation when it comes to sports betting. If we can share some of our experiences Maybe we can learn from one another and the million mistakes that have been made. The one thing so far I have learned is overs suck. I make a majority of bets on unders. What do you guys all prefer betting? I wish I were better at reading lines but honestly I suck at it. Are any of you relatively good at betting on game spreads?

I got fired for my job in 2013. Filed for unemployment and used the $$ to set up my weak $100 bankroll. Bet $20 a game on 'real' sports and $10 a game on things like soccer, tennis, etc. Lived off the rest.
By the end of 2013 I was taking my family on vacations, eating out all the time and considered 'work' watching Greek or Russian soccer at 5:30 in the morning with a cold beer in my hand. I considered 'clocking in' to be when the Euro pregame show started at 2:00 ET on Wednesday or staying up late to see how a wager ended on a J1 soccer game at 3am.
I've seen sports betting be profitable but I also know that it's caused me to distance myself from what's really important, the ones I try to make money to spend with. My family. When you're a degenerate gambler nobody really wins.
