An unidentified — but, reportedly, very, very famous — 28-year-old poker player left behind $300,000 in cash in a brown-paper bag when he exited a Las Vegas taxi earlier this week, and the cabbie enlisted a subsequent fare as witness and called his Yellow Checker Star dispatcher with the news. Every penny — or, more accurately, every $100 bill — was, after verifying its origin, returned to the poker pro.

i saw this story somewhere else. it's a nice story and all but i'm not sure how many people would subject themselves to being prosecuted for a $300,000 theft in a situation where it's highly likely he'd get caught.

Not sure about Nevada law but in my state it wouldn't be theft unless one could have a reasonable idea of owner of property.
Lets say you are driving along the road...
Pull over to take a piss....
While on roadside look down, see a partially open brown paper bag with $$$ in it...
Open bag....
300k
Bundled in stacks...
No ID ( bank markers etc )
No name etc
At least in my state, Im not required to report it.
I did nothing illegal to gain the money..
I just pick it up and put it in my car.
( now this is obviously different than if you see an armored car back door pop open and money bag fall on roadway like you see reported a few times a year )
There YOUKNOW the owner...its printed on the bank bag

What kind of moron walks out of a casino with $300K in cash in a paper bag? I walk around there with a grand stashed deep in my pocket and it makes me nervous.

Cash game players are probably a different breed.
Doubt they want much documentation of buy ins / cash outs ( teller transactions / checks )

yeah, i think that's pretty standard. if you find money and don't have a reasonable way of knowing or ascertaining the owner, it wouldn't be theft. but this case with the cab driver is likely not that kind of situation.

With that...I guess its brown bag your money
You're still playing with chips even if you are at a cash game in a casino. Now I've never cashed out more than $10K in chips in Vegas, but I believe the IRS is notified beyond that amount. And if you are a pro (as it appears this guy is), then they keep track of wins and losses as part of their "job." Maybe not in a cash game in some dude's basement, but from a casino? For sure. So the documentation thing is really no excuse.

In almost every cab in america it says plainly on the cab card the company is not responsible for any items left in the cab in NYC that driver would have a medallion and a new cab the following week and the bag toter would be SOL

if i was that cabbie I would have dumped the cab, driven to the airport with the dough and started a new life
with this would mean you have to leave your entire family and friends, never see or talk to them again, leave the job, leave the medical benefits, no more contact with co-workers or nobody in the states.
too many people wouldn't be ready to do this. When the investigation backtracks, after you go missing, the tapes will show everything just because all taxicabs pretty much have surveillance cameras. Unless you have another identity ready to be used to buy the airplane ticket, the authorities are going to be able to trace all the flights under the name used.
it's just not realistic that anyone would be able to get away with taking that much money out of the taxi cab considering all the circumstances. The man who returned the money did the right thing, especially since he probably knows there's cameras anyways and that sometimes people forget stuff out of the car.
If this happened with an unlicensed taxi cab company, that might be a different story.

i think it'd be a lot easier to just dump the cash somewhere secret/safe and continue driving around picking up as many customers as possible. "Oh, someone left a bag of 300k in the back of my cab? what an idiot. I had no clue I was too busy picking up my next 10 customers. Maybe one of them took it."

Actually, the stupid cabbie is the LOSER...He lost out on 300 grand. I think it would take him 20 years to make 300 grand as a cab driver. Oh well, lesson learned.

True, probably the only way he could have had a chance to keep it.
Anyone heard any rumors on the poker player's name???
