Can anyone who may own or have owned one of these offer some feedback? And does anyone else have a recommendation for me that fits this profile: (9mm, lightweight, compact, and reliable).
And if you despise handguns or guns in general, good for you. No need to mention it here. No one will ever be able to convince me that I wouldn't be better off without a gun if I was in the back of a convenience store when someone came in to rob the place (the first thing I'd do is try to run out the back door, but if I got stuck in a back room with no way out, I'd prefer to hide in the corner WITH a gun as opposed to without one. And that's all I have to say about that.

Hutch I own 20 handguns and have fired both of those weapons. Both excellent. My buddy is a serious expert and owns over 100. He carries dual 45's but he's a big boy, however he swears by that little ruger for a small effective weapon and laughs at my pocket 32. Now make sure you get quality man killer ammo(my favorite is hornady TAP) since i have picked dozens of 9mm fmj of out walking and taking dudes as they stumble in to the er(crazy thing is you never help them right away as someone often is coming to finish them).

I use a Smith & Wesson M&P9 compact (3.5") at the range and love it. Very lightweight but comfortable and easy to aim and use. Very reliable as well. About $600 new

4 AR 15 2 AK 47 ruger mini 14 2 Saiga 12's(try and find those) 8 shotguns 2 22 ruger 10-22 4 scoped weapons 20 hanguns currently up to 50,000 rounds and still going.
search warrant, the smaller the barrel the less accuracy no matter how tricked out the trigger and sights and ammo quality. those weapons are not made for anything else other than CQB situations

warrant, just one is serious if you know how to use it. my wife and i had our first date at a concealed weapons class. thats no lie and she had me at "reload" I figure i have to arm all the kids, wife and some neighbors maybe. plus, 1/4 have never been fired and go in to a pile of tangible investments.

Thanks to all for responding.....good information. Nice to hear from folks who have experience with these two guns. (drj).

When I was looking at pistols today, I ended up getting into a converstation with another customer....he was there buying his 41st gun (he didn't have that many....just how many he has owned). He was purchasing the Ruger 9MM. He had already owned the kahr. He said he was very pleased with its accuracy. He said he was expecting similar performance from the Ruger.
And FYI, I talked to this guy for almost a half hour. Since he has had his conceal and carry permit, he has had two instances where he has had to pull his gun. TWO. He never had to fire the weapon, but he said the first time he had to pull it, he was shaking so bad after he couldn't even call 911. Lesson: If you're going to carry, shoot regularly and consider some training cuz if you ever have to pull your gun, you'll be at about 30-40% of your capabilities.
The one things that I like about both these weapons is there is no hammer and no safety. Less crap to worry about if you are under durress. My Bersa .380 (although I like it) has both.
I can get the Ruger for $359.

That sounds like a terrific piece, but I'm trying to spend less than $500 if I can help it.

FYI, I did like the grip a bit better on the Kahr (it's a bit smaller and just has a touch better hand feel), but I'm not sure that's worth the extra money (I think I could get it for a bit less than $500).

Funny you mention that.....when I told the guy who was helping me I also had a .380, he said, "not exactly a ton of stopping power, but we have some ammunition that can help you close that gap."
I'm not one of those who gets a boner carrying around certain types of ammo, but if you're carrying for personal protection, you ought to have something that could not someone down on angel dust or some crazy shit like that. Can't imagine anyone who has ever had to fire their gun complained that their ammo carried too much pop.

I have a wilson combat with elephant ivory grips, got it from a rich buddy, i had a choice between that and his ed brown...the ivory did it, such a beautiful weapon and damn accurate. the trigger put is harder than my competition weapons for legal reasons. i also got my secretary's fathers 1911 from ww2 reworked remington rand, appears never fired and with a good old holster.
I have a sig 45 european mag release old 220 and 4 springfield xd 45's
I am a big believer in that round whose origins are from the war in the phillipines 100 plus years ago where crazy dudes kept charging with 38 slugs in them.

I own a Kahr PM9 and a Ruger LCP (.380) and like them both. The only other 9mm I have is a Springfield XD and would recommend it over the Kahr. As was metioned above, a lot more depends on the purpose and your experience.

If I’m going to give you a good recommendation rather than simply list something I like for myself I need to know a little more:
What is your price range?
What are the desired purpose/purposes of this gun? Concealed carry, home defense, target practice, ect.
Do you want a compact or a subcompact? Both the guns you listed are subcompacts.
How experienced are you with firearms?
Mostly conceal and carry. I do plan on buying something a little bigger to keep at home.
My budget is $500...I'd break that if I REALLY liked something, but for sure am not spending over $600.
I guess I'm leaning subcompact. In order to get a 9mm that is about the same size as my Bersa .380 (which is super easy to carry, fits great in my hands, and shoots pretty darn comfortably and accruately, by the way), I'd have to go subcompact.
I have a Ruger 10-22, a side by side 20 gauge, a Beretta semi-auto 12 guage, and a Winchester .270 bolt action.
I've shot these guns many a times, but I've only put about 100 rounds through a hand gun at the range. That's part of the gig....I don't think that's nearly enough if you're going to carry a piece. So I have a lot to learn about handguns.

Taking all that into account I think you should take a look at a Glock 26.
It’s a sub $500 10+1 subcompact 9mm, accurate, and you won’t find a more reliable 9mm than a Glock.
Also the Glock 26 accepts any 9mm Glock magazine. Even the 33 rounders.

How's the accuracy/recoil on those 3" barrels compared to a full size 9mm? Always wondered.
Forgot about re-coil. I only asked about comfort level as some of those smaller guns can be painful to shoot. I have a buddy who had a tiny KEL TEC .380 that was just brutal. I was told that both the guns I listed above were quite comfortable to shoot.

my brother is a Doctor and carries a KEL TEC little mofo......but he loves it. Believe it patients come in and if they dont get prescribed pain meds they go nuts.

Impressive. And I read the reviews on the website and you know you have a quality gun when the feedback is almost universally excellent. One thing I've found is that people who know guns generally can find SOMETHING they don't like.
It looks like a great fit for my application and something I can certainly spend some time at the range without having to worry about mechanical issues.

I just got a call back from a buddy of mine....he's pretty knowledgable gun-wise. He said Glock 26 is an excellent choice for conceal and carry. I forgot that those things basically run dry which is another positive. Seems like pretty solid value at $500 too.
