Ex-hubby gave my 13 year old son a gift certificate to some quail hunting camp.
My son has never shot anything over a 22 caliber gun with bb bullets. Although his uncles hunt ( on that side of the family)..they are usually drunk and high (along with his father).
For example., one brother thought it'd keen to shoot at turtles in the water to 'get away from his bait' recently while fishing.
How redneck does that sound?
My current hubby is certified in shooting and won several competitions in his day and knows loads aBout guns.
However, I share custody with my son and I;m not sure there is anything I can do about this.
I asked my son to be smart about it and ask his father to 'practice shooting' before time..and of course, my current hubby will do his part to get him ready...
BUT- my hubby won't be going out with them and I'm VERY concerned as a mother to let him do this as my ex will prolly force him too.
The only thing I've said so far to son is to 'be smart and safe and make good decisions on what you think you are capable of and your surroundings . (they are a bunch of drunks)
My side of the family is well versed in hunting and guns and can teach him much, but with shared custody I'm limited in what I can do physically.
my current hubby has won many stuff for shooting accurately (he's not a hunter but does for competition..or did)
I'm scared to death to let my child go out with the ex and his family.
Only thing I could say without putting his dad and his side of family down was "plz be smart and let Ray teach you (current hubby)"
God help me....and if ya'll can give any advice to a Mom who is facing this ...pls do.

Drunks and guns.... horrible idea, seriously. Let your new 'hubby' take him hunting. Tell your ex that you're okay with him taking your son hunting but only under the condition that it's just the 2 of them, leave the rest of the drunks out of it.

have your son take a safety class and also let your ex know you'll have his balls cut off if anything happens to him
Yeh definitely going to have my husband teach him safety and go to a shooting range to teach him how to shoot. And I totally agree with balls cutting off thing! LOL

get in touch with the judge/courts/lawyers and tell them you feel like your son is actually in serious danger (assuming this loser goes out shooting stuff with guns while hammered/high)...

He's a minor as well. You have every legal right as the mother to raise a flag in the matter. You'll win easily if this clown has substance/alcohol problems.

Let the kid hunt, your worrying to much. I am sure he'll be properly supervised. Hunting Quail is a great time and a great sport for a young man to get into....

100% agree!! I have an 8 and 9 year old, I have taught them to shoot guns, but I was not HIGH or DRUNK!!
Take your concerns to the judge, he should order some type of drug testing. Your son should have the chance to hunt or shoot a gun but you should make sure he gets more than one change. One accident with a gun could be the last one!!

The hunt will be well supervised. I'd have him take a gun safety course. I took one at that age and to this day, I still remember just about everything they taught. Most of the instructors are really good. If he's going to carry a gun, it's a must IMO.
As for hunting with your ex, I'd have a huge problem with that if alcohol or drugs could get involved.

Sit him down & talk 2 him and explain ur concerns.
Have a Happy New Year............
Probably the most logical answer. A lot of the people that will make fun of the south or call you a redneck do not understand the culture, they have a prejudice, just like those that hate blacks or person. Those that criticize hunters and eat meat are hypocrites and ignorant.
That being said.
Hunting and outdoor activities are a great way for kids to learn discipline and improve their self esteem, but you have a valid concern if the ex is going to be drunk and doing illegal drugs around him.
That should be your first concern, as he is much more likely to die in an automobile accident if your drugging drunk ex is going to be driving.

where does you ex-husband hunt? There may be a shooting range in the area.
He just goes with his brothers in either Atlanta area or Florida area (near panama city) my ex isn't a 'true' hunter. We have a shooting range here in Mobile that my current hubby goes to alot so I'm going to have my current hubby take him there a few times.

My ex is a lawyer. And I was a legal secretary for 15 years...there is no action I can take in a case such as this UNLESS an accident occurs.
