My wife and I are due with our first child at the end of January. She has been looking into banking our babies umbilical cord blood which potentially can be used in the future to treat certain diseases. She was looking at using a private bank which would cost initially $2500 and about $100/year after that. Our OB seemed to imply that if you can afford it, it isn't a terrible idea. But she also said that the chances of using it are 1 in 2500. Our OB didn't recommend a specific company, but rather recommended 3 different ones which makes me feel like she doesn't have any kickbacks to say what she did.
A lot of online research I did showed that a lot of the general public seems to think its a scam. One thing that makes me potentially agree with the general public is that several countries overseas have made private banking illegal.
Has anyone done this with their child? What company did you use? General thoughts?

Both my kids now 6 and 3 have their cord blood stored through viacord.
If you have any history in your family of cancer or serious illness than it is a must (and should be anyways). They are so close with stem-cell research and certain therapies. There are families who have had a child who had say leukemia and purposely had another kid for the cord blood and saved the 1st childs life he was cured. It is not a SCAM. Can you imagine if in 20 years you had a serious disease where they could take your kids cord blood and SAVE YOUR LIFE. Cheapest life insurance policy for living and not dying you could ever buy for your entire family.

Thanks for the response LFD! One thing I read is that currently only technology exists to use the stem cells for a human under 115 pounds. I don't know if there is any truth to this... but that would negate my wife or I using it and also our child using it after about age 13 or so. There is so much info out there and its hard to find the legitimate stuff. Do you have any websites that you did research from that seem reliable? Thanks again for the response.
