im 25 and coach a small college team. best thing to remember is to put those kids in place. Don't let 1 person try to control you or your decisions because the entire team will turn its back on you.

i make my guys run suicides 40% of the time. every little thing they do wrong the results are suicides. I've kicked 3 guys out of the gym and never looked back.

stick with your coaching style and don't let any1 tell you otherwise.

Play the kids that deserve the PT.  That means the best players and the guys that hussle their fools off.  High School sports ruined the love of the game for me... never seen it in the same light after those years playing ball.  So much BS politics involved in who you know.  You may not be able to control that so... gain their respect.  Run them.... End of practice have a Free Throw contest or somethin to build unity.  Each player shoots, u miss, entire team runs.  U make, no one runs.  Man bein a coach would be awesome.

Have fun man!!

Teach them how to shave points......it'll come in handy in college & NBA more than free throw shooting....

First thing is first, get them in shape, teach them how to play to D, put in a offense that is easy to understand and simple to run, find a way to get them play hard for you, if you show passion they will follow,

Easy. Run the princeton offense. This way all they will shoot are layups and you guys will never lose because high school kids can't guard it

Don't try to be a friend, which is very tough to do as a young coach. You are not their friend....I've been coaching high school baseball for 7 years and soccer for 3 years...kids respect a tough but fair coach. Do whatever makes you feel right at the end of the day. Half the kids will like you, half will hate you, and half won't give a garbage either way.

I managed my HS boys team.. major program.. Dennis Scott/George Lynch etc...

They were ALL Treated the same.. sure the coach had favorites but everyone was CONDITIONED.. I ran that part of the program.. .. Preseason on.. and we had to do homework.. before practice was a 1 hour study hall.

Have a PLAN and let the assistant be their friend.. you are not their friend.

If you get good, players will want to play for you ..

fyi- the coacvh that I speak of started in his early 20's and today he's in his mid-late 50's. coaches Montrose Christian ... Kevin Durant /Grevious Vazquez, Linas Klieza

WJeremy, Do you still wager on NCAAB games.  Or NBA for that matter?

Hang out at the middle schools were the 8th graders are. Find the taller kids and ask

"Do you think you and your parents could use some 'gas money' to travel to our school?"

I know what you mean, just on a different level.  I was cut from my high school team when I was in 9th grade because I completely humiliated the Coaches son when I blocked him.

After that I went tried out for an AAU team and after one tryout I was on the team.  We played some of the best teams around the country, including the Atlanta Celtics who Josh Smith, Dwight Howard, and other NBA players have played for.

I was able to dunk at the time (now it just hurts after f'ing up my knees up) and I was a 3-point artist. I was the most athletic kid trying out during high school and yet the Coach was just pissed his son was blocked. He told me to not even waste my time trying out the rest of my high school years.  I dislocated my knee before try outs during my sophmore year and worked my behind off to make a point during the tryouts.  Everyone knew the situation and that I would be cut but people decided to stay quiet.  I remember when I was cut I called the Coach out in front of the team and called him out in front of the entire school at a prep rally.  The coach was a complete idiot considering the team played below .500 ball during all four years I was there.

Oh well, my rant is over...long enough, but it ruined my high school years, and now I view my high school as a negative.

Good for you.

Run suicides and end each practice with one person shooting 10 free throws however many they miss the team has to run one extra suicide. Goes 9-10 1 suicide, etc. It'll have them make their foul shots and have them also coaching one another; makes your job easier.

Also implement a simple offense one man running the baseline and downscreens for the posts.
