Like many of you, college football is my favorite sport and I can't wait until September for the season to start.  Meanwhile, I like to follow the sport during the off season.

This thread is for CFB News...feel free to comment on your favorite team or just the sport in general.

Thanks.....................

Early tidbits on the 2017 season...........teams to watch.

* Alabama - Five or six first round draft picks gone...won't matter.
* Ohio State - 11-2, playoff bound with one of the least experienced teams in the country.
* Florida State - Loses Dalvin Cook and Demarcus Walker but returns most everyone else.
* Southern Cal - Won its final nine games with future star Sam Donald at quarterback.
* Penn State - Back to full scholarship level and has a QB/RB combo to watch.
* LSU - Recruited well for years and its major weakness...a lack of offense was addressed with one of the top hires of the offseason in offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

Three really good early game matchups................

Alabama/Florida State - September 2nd in Atlanta.  Maybe No. 1 versus No. 2.  Huge early game for both teams.

Florida/Michigan - September 2nd in Arlington.  2015 Citrus Bowl rematch.  Winner enjoys great start to the season.

Texas/Southern Cal - September 16th.  New coach Tom Harmon against a probable top-5 USC.

There are 21 new FBS coaches this season.  Here's a list of each coach first year salary.  Most have 5 year contracts.  Baylor's coach has a 7 year deal.  Take a look...........

Tom Herman, Texas, $5.25 million
P.J. Fleck, Minnesota, $3.5
Ed Orgeron, LSU, $3.5
Jeff Brohm, Purdue, $3.3
Willie Taggart, Oregon, $2.9
Geoff Collins, Temple, $2.0
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati, $1.9
Jeff Tedford, Fresno St., $1.58
Major Applewhite, Houston, $1.5
Justin Wilcox, Cal, $1.5
Charlie Strong, South Florida, $1.0*
Randy Edsall, UConn, $1.0
Lane Kiffin, FAU, $950,000
Butch Davis, FIU, $900,000
Tim Lester, Western Michigan, $800,000
Mike Stanford, Western Kentucky, $800,000
Brent Brennan, San Jose St., $575,000
Shawn Elliott, Georgia St., $565,000
Jay Norvell, Nevada, $450,000
Tom Allen, Indiana, Undeclosed
Matt Rhule, Baylor, Undeclosed**

*Strong's salary is low because he's still being paid by Texas.
**Briles made $5 million so I would assume Rhule is in the same ballpark.

Sidenote: The highest paid assistant coach is LSU's defensive coordinator Dave Aranda who will make $1.8 million this season.

Three divisions that will be Slugfests.

ACC Coastal - Tons of quarterback losses, but good coaches all over the place.

SEC East - Georgia, Tennessee and Florida poised to battle it out.  Lot of pressure on Kirby Smart and the Dawgs to win it.

Big Ten East - Could have three top-10 teams to start the season.

As teams begin spring practice, CollegeFootballNews ranks there top 15 teams.

1. Alabama.....2. Ohio State.....3. Florida State.....4. Oklahoma.....5. Washington.....6. Clemson.....7. USC.....8. Wisconsin.....9. Stanford.....10. Penn State.....11. Florida.....12. Oregon.....13. LSU.....14. Tennessee.....15. Miami

Alabama has a ton of returning talent again plus the No 1 rated recruiting class.  The talent level is ridiculously good.  It essentially has a former 5 Star recruit competing for playing time in every position group.

Don't Sleep on Florida State..............

The Noles return experience and depth...especially on defense where nine starters return.  Eight of the top 9 tacklers are back...13 of the top 15 return.  This is a group that led the nation in sacks (51) last year and finished 20th in total defense.  The offense returns 7 starters including both kickers.  Improvement on the offensive line is needed but this should be a solid offense even with the loss of RB Davin Cook.  My view is FSU wins the ACC and makes it into the playoffs.

Alabama (Atlanta).....ULM.....Miami.....North Carolina St......@Wake Forest.....@Duke.....Louisville.....@Boston College.....Syracuse.....@Clemson.....Delaware St......Florida

Spotlight on J.T. Barrett (OSU QB)

Throughout his three seasons with Ohio State, Barrett has totaled 6,381 passing yards, 2,465 rushing yards and 100 touchdowns. And while his ability as a passer can be called into question, he's still remained protective of the ball as he threw just 10 interceptions as a freshman, 4 as a sophomore and only 7 as a junior in 2016.  No Ohio State player has found the end zone as often as Barrett, which says a lot.  The Buckeyes will look to Barrett to lead them to the Big Ten title and a playoff spot.  I wouldn't bet against him!

RUTGERS - An argument can be made that the Scarlet Knights had the worst offense in college football last year.  To say that Rutgers' offense was bad last season would be putting it kindly.  They flat out stunk, plain and simple, averaging an embarrassingly low 12 points per game.  The Knights were last (128th) in both scoring offense and total offense.  Lot of work needed this offseason...LOTS!

CLEMSON - The Tigers opened spring drills Wednesday looking for a new quarterback for the first time in three years.  All-American Deshaun Watson is headed to the NFL as a top draft choice.  Junior Kelly Bryant, redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper and 5-Star early enrollee Hunter Johnson are looking to fill the void.  Redshirt sophomore Tucker Israel and freshman Chase Brice will also be given a look.  Bryant will open spring as the number one but in two seasons he's only thrown 18 passes in games.  Johnson is the guy to keep an eye on in my opinion.  He was rated the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the 2016 recruiting class.  Should be an interesting battle in Clemson this spring.

SOUTH CAROLINA - A major knock on SC coach Will Muschamp was his inability to pick a quarterback while at Florida.  During his four years as head man in Gainesville, he started six different quarterbacks, and never got a passing attack going.  During his first season at South Carolina, he found one in true freshman Jake Bently.  Bently didn't start the season but came on in game five to rejuvenate the previously anemic offense.  He passed for 1,420 yards, 9 touchdowns against 4 interceptions while completing 65.8 percent of his passes.  Looks like Muschamp has found his signal caller for the next three years.

MIAMI - After leading the Georgia Bulldogs for 15 years compiling a 146-51 record, Mark Richt enters his second season with the Miami Hurricanes.  After posting a 9-4 record last year, Richt has to smile when looking at his teams 2017 schedule.  Outside of the ACC opener at Florida State, the schedule isn't an excuse with no Clemson or Louisville from the Atlantic Division.  In a ridiculous break, the Canes get a second half run of five home games in six dates before finishing with Pitt.  If Richt can find a suitable quarterback to replace Brad Kaaya...could just be a special season down in south Florida.

Skip, I love the Hurricanes this season....especially against the spread.  Richt  is on a mission...you doubt that and bet against the Canes.  LOSER.

VANDERBILT - It's hard to say that a team that went 6-7 last season could possibly be overlooking anyone, but Vanderbilt can't scoff at opening opponent Middle Tennessee State.  Vandy won the game 47-24 last season, but will have to play on the road against a Blue Raiders team that won eight games last year and beat Missouri in Columbia.  Rarely do teams looking to prove a point come out of the gate flat or overlooking there opponent, but this is a very tricky game to begin the season.  Being on the road just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

As a Pac-12 follower & Husky fan, I'd move all the Pac-12 teams down, except USC.......put them @ 5..........Washington @ MAYBE 10. Stanford is borderline top 20. The Ducks have a stud qb but the rest of the team is suspect, especially, as usual, their defense........ new coaching staff......... off season antics...... I see them as a .500 team in Pac-12 play.

Yeah Mugg, I agree with you that Oregon has some defensive problems.  Last year they were awful and if I remember correctly, there are 9 or 10 starters returning on that D. Having a ton of starters back who couldn't stop a cold last year ain't good in my eyes.

USC @ Notre Dame (Oct. 21)

At least over the last few years, one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports has been reduced to a clunker for the loser usually indicative of a disappointing, underachieving season and simply a notch on the belt of the winner.  This year, Notre Dame gets a much needed week off to get ready to host a battle-tested Trojan team that'll faced Stanford, Texas, and road games at Cal and Washington State by this point.  Considering the rest of the schedules for both teams, the loser is almost certainly out of the playoff hunt.

TEXAS - Charlie Strong (16-21) couldn't get the job done during his three years with the Longhorns.  Enter new coach Tom Herman to right the ship.  Every new coach says in one/way, shape or form, that the team has to 1) get in better shape and 2) has to get tougher.  Herman wants a lighter, quicker, more athletic team that can attack on both sides of the ball.  That means the big, bulky defensive lineman have to slim down a bit.  The defense never seemed able to make a meaningful stop in key situations.  The entire defensive front seven returns, and solid improvement is needed for team improvement.  This first season will be interesting under Herman.

TEXAS A&M - Kevin Sumlin is entering his sixth season in College Station with a 44-21 record.  His best seasons were with a quarterback named Johnny Manziel.  However, the program has gone an unimpressive 8-5 each of the last three years.  Distractors are saying Sumlin is not as good as Aggie fans want him to be.  He's put together elite recruiting classes but just can't seem to put together a championship season.  Winning in the tough SEC West is harder than fans let on, but it's fair to wonder if Sumlin has reached a ceiling.  Expect the heat to ramp up on the coach with another 8-5 season this year.

Look for JT Barrett to have saved is best for last, after 2 abysmall years of offensive play calling under 2 guys who would have be atrocious calling peewee games. in steps Kevin Wilson. i wuld encourage anyone to sprinkle a little coin on JT heisman odds as his numbers will more than likely mimic his 2014 numbers. jt will look like a different quarterback come september 2017 and anyone looking for a large ohio state wager this year. i would look at ohio state team total over against Indiana, expect Keven wilson to have this game circled since he was hired as the ohio state offensive coordinator back in january 2017, points should be aplenty for GODS team in this matchup!

FLORIDA ATLANTIC - With the arrival of Lane Kiffin as the new head coach, the recruiting improved considerably as FAU landed 17 three-star players, which put then atop any past recruiting class.  The 24 man class includes several JUCO transfers that should provide immediate depth and competition for playing time right away.  After three straight 3-8 seasons, many look for Kiffin to lead the Owls to being a quality mid-major program in the future.  The future may just be this season as I and others predict a winning season and possible bowl bid.  That would be quite a turnaround for FAU. Definitely a team to watch during 2017.

ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide have a favorable schedule to potentially reach yet another national title game.  Alabama will not have to play two consecutive road games in 2017 and three weeks after opening the season against Florida State in Atlanta, the Tide will begin conference play against Vanderbilt.  Bama will have consecutive home games against Arkansas, Tennessee and LSU to make up the heart of the schedule.  Alabama gets a reprieve the week before it faces Auburn in the Iron Bowl, as they will play FCS foe Mercer on November 18.  Look for Saban's team to open as a 5 point favorite against Florida State in the opener.

OREGON - The offense was pretty good last year(15th nationally) but the defense was terrible for a better word giving up over 41 points per game.  Eight starters are back on offense which is good but ten starters return on defense which is not good.  New coach Willie Taggard has to find some new players on defense to take some of the pressure off the offense.  Taggard better let new offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal (Alabama) coach the offense while he gives full attention to the defense.
