USA Today’s preseason coaches’ poll was released Friday. That means there are at least a dozen teams that already seriously overrated.

The top 10 teams are generally pretty solid, but there have been some top-5 duds recently. Oklahoma, last year, comes to mind. I’m not convinced that even if Sam Bradford had played all season if the Sooners were a top-5 team last year. They ended at 8-5 and unranked.

In 2005, Tennessee and Michigan were preseason No. 3 and 4 respectively. Neither finished ranked. But overall, the top 5 is generally solid.

But you can completely ignore Nos. 15 through 25. The majority of those teams won’t be there in the end.

DP’s initial thoughts on the coaches’ poll
1. Alabama – Won’t win it all.
2. Ohio State – Underrated.
3. Florida – Will lose at least two games in the regular season.
4. Texas – Will run the table in the Big 12.
5. Boise State – Overrated.
6. Virginia Tech – Will beat Boise State.
7. TCU – May go undefeated, but not one of best two teams.
8. Oklahoma – A year away from contending for national title again.
9. Nebraska – Do not believe in QB Lee. Most overrated team in poll.
10. Iowa – Game of the Year may be Ohio State at Iowa Nov. 20.
11. Oregon – Can’t shake visions of being dominated by Ohio State in Rose Bowl.
12. Wisconsin – Love the Badgers. Big Ten is brutal this year.
13. Miami (Fla.) – Hope they’re not good, but afraid they are.
14. Penn State – Hear there is big-time quarterback concerns.
15. Pittsburgh – Can’t see Wannstache outcoaching Willlingham; therefore, overrated.
16. LSU – Will the Hat remember how to manage the clock this year?
17. Georgia Tech – Paul Johnson is grumpy.
18. North Carolina – Butch Davis could have something this year. BCS bowl not out of question.
19. Arkansas – Mallet has the look of a Heisman.
20. Florida State – Why did Bobby Bowden want to stay around until after this season? Underrated. Ponder looks like Mallet.
21. Georgia – Most underrated team in the poll.
22. Oregon State – 22 seems about right.
23. Auburn – Same team as Arkansas but without a Heisman trophy candidate at QB.
24t. Utah – Utes have treated me right last couple of seasons.
24t. West Virginia – Think they’re going to be better, but don’t really know. Got clobbered by FSU in bowl game.
Later … DP

Virginia Tech #6 seems too high considering not much of the defense returns and Tyrod Taylor is not really a proven passing QB.

Oklahoma and Wisconsin will make serious noise this year.

Bigsew ... When Taylor's good, he's great ... but you're right he always seems to have one game where he kills the Hokies.

Badgers have nearly everyone back. Buckeyes, Hawkeyes and Badgers ... Big Ten is brutal.

My Sooners on the other hand must get better offensive line play ... meaning they must stay healthy.

Good luck ... DP

usuallly agree with you more often than not... but with respect to your comments on each team, i think you are generally wrong far more often than not... your predictions look like they belong in the bizarro world...

agree that Bama will not win it all... after that, you went south...

Which one do you think I'm most wrong about and why? I'm telling you, Paul Johnson is grump.

I Hate Both the AP and Coaches Poll.....

Wish they would not release either until atleast week 6....  Too many teams have almost no Chance of getting to the BCS Championship .....

If I had to Guess 10+ of these teams will not make the Final Coaches Poll....

BOL this season Brother ,,, enjoy the rest of the Summer

-  In what way is OH ST under rated?  I take that to mean you think they should be number 1?  Based on what?

-  Who are UFs losses to?

-  FL ST is about right.

Those are the big three in your comments that I cannot see eye to eye with you on.  The rest are pretty good I think.

well, for starters, how is Ohio St underrated at #2?  this team is the same every year... people get their hopes up and forget that they are a Big 10 team... even when they returned 21 starters they weren't anything to write home about... that comment just has no foundation in reality... they will not finish the season in the top 2, and that is a very conservative prediction...

next... why is Boise overrated?  i highly doubt they will lose to Va Tech, although it is possible... but that doesn't make Boise overrated, regardless...

why is Nebraska overrated at #9?  this looks like the only respectable defensive team in the Big 12 this year, and should be much improved offensively... i will be surprised if they finish outside of the top 19...

finally... the Big 10 is brutal?  on what planet and in what eon?  i see nothing remotely special about the Big 10 this year... Iowa might be a pleasant surprise, but doubtful that any other team will be overly impressive...

Apocalypse

-- I believe Ohio State has the potential to play the highest level of football, which is why to start the year I would vote them No. 1.

--I think Boise loses to Va. Tech in a close game. Due to the soft WAC, that loss will kill them in the polls and have them ranked lower than No. 5 to start the year.

--Until Nebraska QB gives me any reason to believe in him, I won't believe in the Huskers. I bet on teams with good QBs.

--Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin are Top 10 teams in my opinion. Mich and Mich State both should be better and if Penn State can get anything out of its QB, they'll be in the mix. That's six teams capable of finishing in the Top 25. Brutal

@Tiasman

--Yes, I believe OSU has the ability to play the highest level of football this year. And that's what I think being preseason No. 1 is about.

-- UF loses to 'Bama and UGA.

--The FSU's players keep dropping they me overrated at No. 20.

Good luck, buddy

I think West Virginia will surprise this year, they will be better at the QB spot and make a nice run at the Big East Title

My initial thought is that is sad that polls actually decide the fate of the eventual so called champion more then the actual talent of the teams.
