The over here is set at 8 (-115) and I'm liking the over…here's why:
Oakland had to dip into its bullpen early yesterday after Straily got lit up for 6 ER in 3.2 innings. They used 5 relievers to cover the remaining 5.1 so they put their work in to steal this win. While Richards was able to go 7 innings for the Angels and was able to push through despite giving up 5ER, they ended up using 6 additional relievers. The amount of extra resources for tonight's should be limited and if they are available, the bullpen arms may be a little tired giving our hitters an advantage.
With the bullpen weighing in on the minds of the opposing managers, this situation will be putting pressure on the starters to make it into the 7th inning. Good thing the underachieving Angels are sending 22 year old baby Skaggs to the mound vs Tommy Milone.
Skaggs is heading into his 3rd game of the season and is 2-0 to start. He's pitched well, walking only 1 through 15 IP. His competition this year includes the Astros & Mets…well maybe that's why you're 2-0. Not that there is much history to judge off of, but this season his K/9 is down and his pitch count per inning is down as well from 17.4 to 12.3. What we have had thus far in his early season are bad hitters swinging at junk. Now he faces the A's, who through the season thus far walk 4.5 times a game, good for 2nd in the league. This A's lineup is a little more patient and owns the 8th best batting average on the road. I think we see some runs for Oakland again tonight.
On the other side of the field, we have Milone. He will be starting his 2nd game of the year. While Trout had trouble with him last year, Kendrick and Pujols feasted off of him and I think we see that continue. Dating back to last year, his ERA was 4.69 on the road and 3.44 at home, giving up over a hit an inning while away. I'm not going to dig into Milone too much as I actually like Milone to do a decent job today.
After 28 combined hits in yesterday, I think there are enough good right handed hitters who can tag these lefties for a few runs. Sign me up for the over in this one.
