Wealthy David Thomson of Toronto, the man who owns most of the shares of the MTS Centre and True North Sports Entertainment in Winnipeg, has purchased the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League and will move them to Winnipeg for the 2010-2011 season. The Moose will move to Saskatoon. The announcement will be made after the Olympics. Believe what you want to beleive.

I live in Winnipeg and there has been lots of tidbits floating out there, which lead me to believe your story is accurate. The only contradicting information I have heard is that, ironically enough it is Phoenix, not Atlanta that is coming to town.

I hope so and that they can get the Jets name back... COOL !!!
I saw a show once that said Winnepeg could not support an NHL team due to local economy and expected ticket sales levels there in an NHL price range. But who knows. I hope it happens for Winnepeg.
With all the snow there recently, Atlanta might become a hotbed of hockey itself...

If it happens this will be great for Winnipeg. I lived in the Peg in the late 80s and early 90s prior to the Jets leaving for Phoenix. While the team struggled on the ice the crowds always came to support them.

The one thing to the story is that unless the NHL changes it's rules on this one, the move cannot be made to Winnipeg until the mext year as they would have had to announce the plan to move before January 1st of this year.
However, I am hearing that work has been seen being done on the MTS center in past few days on some of the signage and lockerrooms and stuff.

Same here Konabuzz, Winnipeg fans always showed their support both on and off the ice but BBB (Big Bad Betman) wanted more teams in the US and plucked them from Canada. Can you imagine the problems he could have avoided with Phonenix if he had just left them there? No court cases, no bankruptcies, etc.
I'll have to pull out my Winnipeg Jets jersey if they do (I'm sure it still fits) LOL

That's the key thing here. I just can't understand when they build it, why didn't they make it bigger to lure an NHL team there. They will have to build something bigger for sure. It can only hold 15,000 for pucks.

What was stupid also was they refused to build a new arena back in the 90s when Barry was saying he needed a new building.

I have allways though any team south of the mason-dixon line was a waste of time for the nhl,,,,sure I love my caps ,,,just shy of it...but carolina,,tampa, dallas, phoenix, and atlanta have all sturggled with attendance.....can't support a team without revenue.....was allways in favor of nhl staying in canada cities.....good for weeny get the jets back.....had only one trip to the yotes center got box seats and it was empty of fans,,,really sucks...hell vegas can't support a minor ahl team

Yes, Yes, Yes to Winnipeg! Let's get all of these teams out of the South and get them in hockey markets where they belong. I watch these Atlanta games and I swear there are about 50 people total in the arena. I want to see Queen Elizabeth's mug in the Winnipeg Arena again!
