On most teams Davis' antics would have been tolerated and perhaps cost the team the game. But not on this night, and not with this coach. Pop and Doc are two coaches who will get in their players' faces if they have to. Meanwhile, the other night, Memphis lost the game and the cover because their young coach allowed them to play at the Warrior's pace, even allowing his team to exchange threes in the 4th with the Dubs (as Mike Conley decided to go mano-a-mano against Curry) even though they had mismatches inside the key. But what was even more revolting than seeing Memphis play out of character in those last few minutes was their coach's inability (or refusal) to get his team back on track by reminding them to take advantage of the mismatches they had with Gasol and Randolph. These are things that give capper's nightmares, and in the NBA, where most coaches are mere figureheads (too scared or insecure to call out a player for their actions) it might behoove us to bet on those (when possible) who won't cost us the game.

The coach is another piece to the equation that should never be underestimated when choosing to make a play. Even more so in the NBA and in some cases even equal to the NFL. Excellent write-up BB.

Yes, Thom, the NFL and NBA are like night and day. One is a regimented, militaristic outfit (where the coach is the general) and the other is looking more and more like a pickup game at rucker park, where to coach is a glorified cheerleader (except for the Spurs, of course, where Pop, an ex military man, rules with an iron fist). This aspect of the game (where coach's seem to have far less control in the NBA) really throws a wrench into the capping equation. Look at the Bulls, for instance. They repeatedly beat/cover against superior teams because of their coach (he is so much better than most). And yet, talent wise, they are far inferior and can get blown off the court by teams like the Blazers, on a good night. So all these factors must be weighed when betting on or against the Bulls.

BTW, that's why I'm willing to lay the -4.5 on the road against Boston but not at home against an explosive offensive team like the Blazers. Boston has a little less talent than the Bulls but the Bulls will play much harder especially after an embarrassing loss.

This point is exactly why I am not sold on OKC wearing a ring this year. Brooks has little to no control of Westbrook's actions on the court and has not shown that he can diagram plays to utilize the strengths of his team when it counts.
