But I cant help wondering what made the League decide to Negate an obvious down by contact call on Forsette just by an illegal challenge by the Lions???
Think about it, if the new rule of the league is to review every TD is it not to be assumed that maybe Schwartz was acting on emotion and challenged the play immediately? I mean c'mon, letting a play like that stand just because a coach got his panties in a wad and threw the challenge when he wasn't supposed to? Just a silly rule if they already plan on reviewing it anyways. Bad break for the Lions on that one just sayin, They may have to look into changing that rule next season based on that boning Detroit got for that.
Thoughts??

I think it was partially the refs fault for not calling the whistle for Forsett being down in the first place. I was going for the Texans but it makes me question the NFL and Vegas ties.

Great Points. The Refs are going to review the play anyway and you're going to penalize the coach for being correct about the refs darn up. Why? to speed up the game? Why they even have coaches challenges when they review all turnovers and touchdowns? What is left to challenge? Spotting of the ball? That's the one thing the refs get right most of the time.

They only thing that makes sense is Schwartz thought if they blew it on the field, they'd blow it on the review, I'll throw the flag to give them more time to look.
But, NFL refs are taught if the play is close, LET IT GO, WE CAN ALWAYS REVIEW IT LATER. Say the Houston player got knocked out at the 3, and didn't score a touchdown. He throws the flag, and the call gets reversed. But by throwing the flag, HE NEGATED ANY SHOT THE REFS HAD TO REVIEW THE PLAY.
It is a stupid rule. It's like the NFL is saying "Well, we were going to review it, until you had to make a big deal about it! Like we need to be reminded, Coach! So, we're gonna punish you!'
Somewhere, Jim Harbaugh is laughing his a$$ off.........
Schwartz telling Harbaugh "know the rules" in the Back Pat game a few years ago...................

Is it possible that Shwatrz asked to review the wrong play.....did he ask to see if the player was down by contact or challenge the TD which was obvious!

good question mystical. . but i think the rule reads that you CANT BENEFIT from and wrongly timed challenge so in that made up scenario where if that same play happened, but houston throws the challenge knowing that would negate any review they would still review it so houston doesnt gain an advantage. . I would argue, and I think anyone with common sense would agree that Schwartz and the lions dont really gain any advantage trying to challenge something thats already about to be reviewed. Its pretty much like Hawk said; "Well, we were going to review it, until you had to make a big deal
about it! Like we need to be reminded, Coach! So, we're gonna punish
you!'

I think the best solution was to rule him down by contact BUT awarded Hou 15 yds and a FD for the wrongful challenge. Seems a lot more fair to me.

the flaw is in the rule that doesn't allow a review. you should be allowed a review but also be flagged the 15 yard penalty. the NFL has said finally they will look into this and will most likely change it by the end of this year.

NEW NFL rule: If Couch decide to throw the Challenge Flag on a play that was a touchdown.. It will ATUO Negate the Booth Review and award the TD.
I guess Couches are suppose to be on point when it comes to throwing the Challenge flag... I believe this happened last week too but forgot the game ><

Detroit got screwed when the officials ruled Calvin Johnson's TD catch in the end zone incomplete as time expired at Soldier Field a couple years ago....saying he got up too early and didn't have possession of the ball.

Can anyone tell me what kind of benefit a team would have by challenging a play that is already going to be reviewed? I just don't understand the reasoning behind the rule I think.

This exact incident happened to Atlanta's coach Mike Smith last week against the Cardinal's. He illegally through his challenge flag, thus making play unreviewable. The NFL was all over the situation last week, and told all coaches the following to be careful not to throw the challenge flag. You can also see in Jim Scwartz's mannerisms that he made a goof on throwing the flag. You can see him mouth the words, ”my bad” on live television. He knew the rules beforehand, but he just had a brainfart in a must win game for his team. The NFL is not rigged guys, and this rule is thoroughly being looked at because it happened on a nationally televised game.
