#1 Posted: 1/12/2012 7:45:02 PM Take a look at who the 49ers "shut down" this year. They play in the crappy NFC West (Rams x 2, Seattle x2, Arizona x2, all far from offensive juggernauts). They played the Browns, Redskins, and Buccaneers. Their decent opponents were the Eagles (who's offense struggled for identity), the Ravens (led by an iffy Joe Flacco), the Bengals (rookie QB early in the year). The other decent teams the played were the Giants (NY scored 20), Dallas (scored 27), Detroit (score 19) and the Steelers (held them to 3). They are a good defense, but lets take a look at who those defensive stats came against. They havent seen an attack like New Orleans yet. Thoughts? |

#3 Posted: 1/12/2012 8:37:34 PM They played their schedule, stepped their games up. You have to watch a complete 9er game to appreciate this team and what they are about.

they are good on defense but the Numbers are inflated due to playing in the Piss poor NFC West |

#5 Posted: 1/12/2012 8:39:22 PM F-150, this post isnt to disrespect the 49ers. They are improved and playing well, but I dont think all the defensive praise they are getting is being taken in the proper context. |

#6 Posted: 1/12/2012 9:52:56 PM Totally agree. I think this is the easiest game to cap this week. I love the Saints this week. 49ers played a very soft schedule this year. N.O. too many weapons. Saints 34-16 |

My thoughts are that you haven't watched this defense play or base your opinion by public perception. This is a great defense. Mike Ditka said On Sunday that this 49er defense reminded him of the '84 Bears, the year before they were the best ever. Now who's opinion is going to hold more weight with me? Yours or Mike Ditka's?
I'll get back to you on that. |

Well, 20, 19, and 3 looks pretty damn good to me against those teams.If N.O. scores 3, S.F. will score 12, if 19, they score 21, if 20,they score 24. |

#11 Posted: 1/12/2012 10:48:09 PM A quick glance shows the 49er's were 3-1 vs. the teams in the play-offs. Like F-150 noted, they are a great story this year. As a college basketball coach, it never ceased to amaze me what a good defense could do to a good offense. That appears to be true in college FB, if you see the nation's top 2 teams. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the NFL is a different animal. Like most of the games this time of year, TO's will be huge, and the Niners can create them. Four points may be too many |

I'll get back to you on that.
I watched them play a few games this year, and one that sticks in my
head was against my Eagles. Vick and the Eagles embarrassed this team
in the 1st half of that game. Vick passed for over 200 yards as the
Eagles marched up and down the field and went into the half up 20-3 at
half. That includes Ronnie Brown fumbling on the 1yd line on 2nd n goal
and sf recovered.
Then in the 2nd half Vick proceeded to throw for 200 more yards
finishing with 416 yds passing. Two drives in the 2nd half resulted in
missed fg's by our rookie kicker. One was a 39 yarder and the other was
a 32 yarder. Another drive in the 4th qtr the Eagles drove all the way
to the sf 30 when Maclin fumbled.
The Eagles did whatever they wanted, driving up and down the field especially through the air. The Saints will do the same thing, as they are even better than my Eagles.

#16 Posted: 1/13/2012 12:01:16 AM How about the Saints who play the majority of their games on turf which fits their style perfectly. Also, the Saints played Panthers 2x, Bucs 2x Minny, Indy, Jacksonville come on they played crap teams as well let's not sugar coat it. Seattle 7-9 and Arizona 8-8 weren't terrible teams either.

No doubt breaks were with Niners vs the Eagles. Breaks happen to all teams, good-n-bad. IMO, that game was the turnaround for this season. In particular, the hussle play by Justin Smith (DE) to not give up on the play and knock the ball loose from Maclin to secure the win. Otherwise, Maclin play had the Eagles in FG range. Niners went on to dominate TB (3-1 at the time) 48-3 and tammed then 5-0 Lions @Det. In all, Niners strung together six wins before losing @Ravens.
Ninere were a better team @Ravens then when they were @Eagles (8 weeks later). IMO, they were even a better team @Sea (on 12/24, 12 weeks later). Seahawks are tough at home. They HANDLED your Eagles, beat Ravens and gave Niners all they could handle on their last home game of the season.
Basing your capping of this game based upon how Niners played vs the Eagles on 10/2/2011 is stating/believing that SF did not improve since? |

#21 Posted: 1/13/2012 8:18:49 AM this game is interesting the 49ers do have a very good defense but are very young and most of these guys have never been in the playoffs , and the saints have never won a playoff road game ever , something's got to give , i know the saints are better than last year but u can't forget them getting smacked by the seahawks , and that defense of seattle last year was nothing to write home about , neither was there offense . |

and only one on the road, and it was the worst offensive team in the league so the saints got plenty of possessions and still struggled to score.

#23 Posted: 1/13/2012 9:48:29 AM These odss makers are brilliant, and have hooked in about 80% of my covers brothers on the 9ers. If the 9ers were going to win this, they would be favored at home, plain and simple, and the fact that the line is 3.5, has again hooked in the masses (squares) on the 9ers, thinking that the half point will matter. I have news for you, it won't. Alex Smith will not beat The Saints, ain't gonna' happen!

i'm on the Saints, but how do you figure SF has QB problems? Alex Smith is legit! he just needed the right guy to get him on track, and there is no more "right guy" on the planet that Harbaugh... he will be a very good QB in the NFL for many more years... he is definitely not a problem for SF! |

#25 Posted: 1/13/2012 10:13:26 AM The Niners played the Saints last year on MNF and lost by a field goal with time expiring. To say that they haven't played an offense like the Saints is not true.
