There is no guarantee he is going deep in the playoffs with this old team. They are one tony parker injury away from being irrelevant. And the guy has been breaking down the last few years (always that hamstring), so that is a real possibility. You simply are not gonna contend in a western conference stacked with great point guards if yours goes down. That's the problem, and a big one at that (imo).
If he signed with the Cavs maybe you could convince me that leaving 10 mil on the table was worth it because only an injury to LBJ derails them from getting to the finals in the weak East and maybe not even that. If LBJ went down and Irving and Love were healthy they probably still get to the finals. So if he really wanted a deep playoff run, that was the team to join.
Lebron is your coach in Cleveland BB. It is obvious he is becoming power hungry as his career progresses into his 30's. If Lebron doesn't think you function in the offense? You sit...for good. In San Antonio, they go 13 deep. You are guaranteed to be a part of something special.
West now gets the best coach in the league and plays with the legend Big Timmy and his fading sidekicks (and now LA as well).
Those are damn good reason to take the $1.5 million in SA over Cleveland.

Beginnerboy - why do you not respect a guy for leaving 10 mil on the table? Maybe that is not a reason to respect a guy but is definitely not a reason to not respect a guy.
He is a grown man and was well aware of his choices and what the implications would be. It is his choice to leave 10 mil on the table. He knows the consequences.
His choice. No one else has any right to fault him for it.

First of all, let's not turn this guy into mother teresa. If he wasn't leaving all that money on the table, this move would be viewed differently. He is trying to do what so many athletes have tried to do at the end of their careers (Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Barkley, the list goes on and on), ride the coattails of a winning team to get that elusive ring. So what he is doing is for selfish reasons (winning a title not with his own team, i.e., guys he played with for years, but on a team full of strangers), even if what motivates him is not money. He obviously wanted out of Indiana but if he was smart he would have tried to negotiate a buyout, which may have netted him more money. So to me, David West is a mercenary (and not a very bright one), trying to win a title at the twilight of his career. But these things rarely work out.

He has a chance to win either with Spurs or Cavs. You can argue which team has a better chance both ways. So I don't think this is the issue. I think he chose the Spurs because it better fits his personality. Plus you won't have to deal with the media circus and drama as much as if you were with the Cavs.

These are not your grandad's warriors buddy. Curry up there with LBj for jersey sales, the Finals were the highest rated in years...this team will now get the calls (non calls) in the playoffs and that will go a long way. Spurs are rating killers (compared to the Dubs and OKC), with or without LA.
Spurs did not get the calls in this series (especially in SA) and payed the price. Lol, David West. What an idiot! This is my favorite thing about the Spurs losing. I wonder how he feels about leaving that money on the table now. I don't enjoy other's misery, but as I said when this thread was posted, he was an idiot, not only giving up the money but going to the Spurs instead of a true contender.

He will sign with Spurs for 1.5m. So you can say that he wants a ring pretty badly..
OUCH if they don't win..
Ouch is right. Sorry, can't help but bump this thread. Of all the Spurs, you know he has to be hurting the most. Hell, if he stayed with the Pacers they probably beat the Raptors and now the Heat, their old nemesis. He might have gotten to the ECF.

I don't think he gives a fk since he's already worth over 20 m
What does that mean? He ain't worth crap now. You mean he has 20 million? That means he left half his net worth on the table. Money he will never make back at age 35-36.

He has over 20 M more than he and his close ones will ever need to live a very comfortable life. Surely the 10.5 M deal wasn't for 1 year, what were the details of the contract

CHOOSING between money and success is an eternal problem for athletes.
Do they play at a club likely to win silverware? Or do they chase more coin offered by a team with a weaker roster?
That’s the situation NBA player David West faced back in 2015. After joining the Indiana Pacers in 2011 the power forward had an option to extend his stay by at least another year for the 2015-16 season, in which he stood to gain $AUD17.1 million.
He turned it down.
After finishing a disappointing ninth in the Eastern Conference at the end of the 2014-15 season, West couldn’t see the franchise challenging for an NBA finals berth anytime soon.
But when the San Antonio Spurs offered him $AUD1.9 million for the upcoming season, he accepted.
They finished sixth in the Western Conference that year and were an attractive proposition for West, who liked the team’s culture and future championship prospects. They already had a raft of senior players — a factor the veteran said would help him fit in.
Essentially, West sacrificed $AUD15 million in the hope he’d be sacrificing money for a championship.

after the 67 wins and the dominate game 1 vs OKC I'm sure West didnt expect it to end exactly like this. For all the shade some folks are throwing online at DW, you gotta respect the fact that (unlike a lot of other athletes) he prioritized getting his championship over just maximizing his salary. Granted, no way I could make the same decision, but won't hate on the guy because he made it.
