It's a great accomplishment, but considering how easy it is to pass the ball in this era, passing records are being set at a high rate because it is so easy to pass the ball.

 

No comparison to Johnny U era.

The claw: it's not that it has all of a sudden become so much easier but it has more to do with the development of the game and the players. It's not like the players have become so much more accurate or the receivers wear sticky gloves of some sort. The game has developed schematically, among other things.
