gave the saints the finger and went to a team that deserves such a good qb. what a bunch of scum bags cant even get a contract for a qb of his calliber no one as good as brees has to wait this long for a contract they are treating him with gargantuan disrespect i feel for the man drew brees who has done so much for new orleans only to get the finger from the GM.

They should have tore up his contract a year ago and re-negotiated. Now he's another year older and still has a year on his current deal.

Saints are screwed.  They don't pay him and they will take huge heat.
They do pay him and he's probably going to cost more than he's worth.

Read Monday Morning Quarterback on SI. This guy has outperformed Manning and Brady the last few years. Peter King has Brees signing for 21 mil a year.

Now, the stupid Saints (and I think we can agree on this; any team THAT LIES to the Commish, AND THEN goes out and has a bounty system IS STUPID) seem to think that Brees is good, not great.

I suggest the Saints take a look at their record the 10 previous years before Brees got there...................

And the dumbest of the dumb? How about Johnathan Vilma? He's sueing the NFL (okay, the Commish) for "defamation of character"

Yet, on his Twitter account, you'll never guess what his avatar is. The SI cover with the Sports Illustrated cover, screaming "Bounty Culture'' with Vilma front and center, very big, jumping out on the cover. If being degraded by being identified with the bounty story is a sue-able offense for Vilma, and if he accuses Roger Goodell of disparaging his character to the point where it's going to be difficult for him to ever find work in or out of the NFL, why does he identify himself with something so reprehensible? How on the one hand can you want something like the SI cover representing you to the Internet world, and on the other hand you sue the man responsible for allegedly making you so infamous? What a person

darn the Saints.

I agree that they should be working on his next contract at a higher rate.  Not sure what that should be, probably somewhere in between what he wants and what they are offering.  But he should come to camp and play out his contract.

That is the biggest problem with athletes.  Play out your contract.  No one forces them to sign multi year deals.  YES I know that owners can drop anyone before the year...but the players union agreed to that.

Play your contract out and renigotiate.

That being said I think he deserves to be paid more.  Exactly what I dont know.  But he should be paid more than what he makes now.  But that is for 2013.  Not 2012.  Play out your contract.

Uh, real? Brees DID play out his contract. The Saints have put the franchise tag on him for the coming season. For 2012. His 6 year deal came to an end in 2011. Last season. Let me know if I'm going too fast.

You are correct.  I was thinking he was on the last year.  My apologies for the error.

And I typed slowly so you could read it at your pace.

In a perfect world, NO should do a sign and trade with MIA. And I think they're still way under on the cap. That team could use a great quarterback. The NFC South approves this recommendation.

Screw the Saints and let them go back to obscurity.

I don't know why I said he had another year on his deal.

Bottom line is, they should have tore up his contract early and re-negotiated.  Yeah, they would have had to pay him more last year, but they would have gotten a better deal for 2012 and beyond than they are going to get now.

If they are willing to give him $19, why not $21?  It's a lot, but in comparison to other QB's, it probably fits.

Maybe they don't want to commit to 4 years and $85M to a QB if they think they will struggle to be competitive with the punishment they have received from the Commish (ie. suspensions, draft choices, etc.).  They could easily still be good for a at least a couple more years. It's not like their division is the toughest in football.

Look, if they're willing to pay the guy $19 million, I'm not crying about the Saints Drew Brees.  That's plenty of $.

Try an office job someday.

The reason why you guys thought Brees had another year on his deal is because he is indeed under their control this year due to the franchise tag. So he can give them the finger all he wants, but if he wants to play this season, he's a saint.

he seems like too classy of a guy to give them the finger and i think he
likes the way payton coaches(he was pissed when the nfl suspended  him for a year and demanded an explanation) think he just waits and tests the market next year and the saints will either have to pay him what he's worth or he'll go elsewhere and the saints can go back to the bottom of the division when they had guys like arron brooks playing there.

To be honest I think it was selfish of Drew Brees threatening to hold out.  The offer was 19+ million per year before the new deal was finalized.  Dont get me wrong, he is a great QB but how much money does a guy need.

Both players and owners do whats called postering, it happens every year, I wouldn't get to work up over it, it's just how negoeciating a new contract works.
