BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Bristol Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith is considering about $1 million worth of changes to return his Tennessee track to the way it was before a 2007 reconfiguration.
"We are going to take a very hard look at it this week," Smith told The Associated Press on Monday. "We have everything in our computers that shows us what the track used to be and what it is now, and we started working on that last night. I'll have an answer for you next week on if we'll alter the track."
“
The fans vote is the most important thing.
”
-- BRUTON SMITH
The .533-mile bullring was long one of the most popular venues in NASCAR because of the aggressive style drivers had to adopt to be competitive on the tight track. The August night race is considered a showcase, and the combination of bumping and banging for 500 laps on a hot summer night usually led to an explosion of tempers.
It mellowed a bit after the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship was formed in 2004, and drivers trying to make NASCAR's title-deciding format had to be cautious that late in the season. Then came the 2007 reconfiguration, which added variable banking in the corners and opened lanes for two-and-three wide racing.
With so much room, there's not as much contact between the cars, and fans have complained that Bristol just isn't the same.
Smith said SMI will study fan comments this week.
"I want to be sure that the fans like what they see," Smith said. "If the fans like three abreast through the turns, we do nothing. If they don't, then we'll alter the track. The fans vote is the most important thing."
If changes are made, they'll be done in time for NASCAR's Aug. 25 return to Bristol.
"If I am going to do anything, I am going to guarantee we are going to do it before August," he said. |

#3 Posted: 3/20/2012 5:06:08 PM if the day had been pretty all day and rain wasn't an issue i believe the track configuration would have started yesterday but with the weather being the way it was they will use that as an excuse 2 put it off and bristol is 1 of the most expensive tracks on the circuit 4 parking, hot dogs, beer and HOTELS!!! they on hotels.. i was at the race on sat. and sun. sun. wasn't even half full!!! worst attendance i have ever seen at bristol.... do something with the racing because i wont b going back until they do something... rather go 2 pocono and watch r.smith win a fuel mileage race then that garbage i saw sun.

#5 Posted: 3/20/2012 7:19:53 PM The fans have spoken. All you had to do was take a look at the stands on Sunday. They will and should change it. The drivers love it now but they're the only ones. I thought the racing was decent but the cache that used to be attached to Bristol is gone and that is the problem, thus the empty seats. Bravo Bruton...

#8 Posted: 3/21/2012 12:05:22 AM I think they should do something, get it back to excitment, when all 43 cars had some sort bang up or tire rubs on the side, Gotta tell ya, haven't been there in a long time in fact last time i was there they didn't even have stands around the whole place, you could sit up o the hill but anyways lets see if they will do something,,, keep it safe but more exciting,
cheers |

#10 Posted: 3/21/2012 2:29:36 PM Good for Bruton. I know the weather sucked, but just watching it at home seemed less exciting seeing all those empty seats.
Brsitol tix used to be something that families passed down from generation to generation thats not the case anymore. |

#11 Posted: 3/21/2012 9:24:59 PM The place was half full fellas but even at half full it still had 80,000 fans.
Some tracks would love to see 80,000 right?

#12 Posted: 3/21/2012 9:28:42 PM The thing about the new track is this.....The fastest car on the track running the low line may take 10 laps to clear a damn lap car. Thats just not good racing. Even if he don't change it I can assure you the Night race will have plenty of rowdy race fans.

#17 Posted: 3/29/2012 10:18:37 PM I've heard the majority of drivers hate the idea and any change will likely come in the form of tires. The concept being to run a tire that shows significant performance drop off fairly quickly...thus...reducing likelihood of long green runs and adding pit strategy drama. |
