Soviet Red Army vs. Philadelphia Flyers (1-11-76)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2VUUzezVf8&feature=plcp

In my opinion... One of the most important games in NHL History had the defending SCChampions (Flyers) facing off vs what many considered to be the best team in all of hockey.

The NHL had faired extremely poorly vs the touring Soviet teams... until The Red Army rolled into the City of Philadelphia, the birthplace of the USA, and faced off vs the Broad Street Bullies... who had something itself to prove to the world. It was more than a game to many and especially the Flyers and thier fans. Those days were magical indeed... and the Broad Street Bullies delivered.

My only disappointment with this game is that Bernie Parent did not play in this game and shutout those Ruskies.

History was made... and I loved every minute of it... and still do.

A few months later the Flyers reign of NHL dominance ended in a SCFinals sweep loss to the Habs burgeoning dynasty of the late 1970's... BUT on that day in January of 1976... The Flyers OWNED the hockey world and it's hearts.

With Ukie parents and family who survived WW2 and having made thier way to the USA eventually... We all sat back and watched as our beloved Flyers took it to the Ruskies and defeated them soundly in every way.

I was born in Philly so I enjoyed the looks on my parents faces as much as I did the game... I miss them both.

1972 Summit Series Final Game

Canada vs Soviet Union

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qzqHgfGgLQ&feature=fvwrel

From YouTube user:

Game 8 of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union.

Please note: This is the original broadcast. The signal was relayed from Moscow, to London and finally to Canada, therefore the quality is rather poor and there are occasional audio/visual glitches.

The messed up picture at times just makes it more like a trip back into the past... when coat hangers made TV much better. Ha,ha,ha. I think the Ruskies did it on purpose.

Kings@Oilers (Game 1) - '82 Playoffs (Condensed to 9 minutes)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja-HbPoB3P8&feature=related

From YouTube user:

Highlights - Game 1 between the Kings and Oilers 1982 Semi-Finals . An NHL record was set for most goals by two teams in a playoff game. As wild as this game was, it would be topped by Game 3 ( The Miracle On Manchester).

Oilers@Kings OT - '82 Playoffs(The Miracle On Manchester)

THIS VIDEO is more than the OT... It's a condensed version of the game into 13 minutes with an extended clip after the OT GWG by Evans... Great Stuff here.

From YouTube user:

Highlights - Oilers vs Kings Game 3 Semi Finals - The Los Angeles Kings complete one of the biggest comebacks in hockey history vs the high-flying Edmonton Oilers. Down 5-0 going into the Third period, they slowly mount a comeback, tying the game with just seconds left, before winning it in overtime in dramatic fashion.

Greatest NHL comeback-St.louis Blues vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

NOTE: Video is condensed into approximately 8 minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4kxfgP1mEc&feature=related

From YouTube user:

9/7/2011: RIP Pavol Demitra and Igor Korolev. Both players played in this game and were aboard the plane crash that killed the KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. The hockey community will miss both of you as well as the other 41 People who died today.

-------------------------------------------

This is the greatest third period comeback in the history of the NHL. The blues trailed 5-0 with
15:10 remaining in he game, and came back to score 5 goals to force overtime, and would then score 17 seconds into OT. Only three times has a team come back from being behind 5 goals in the third period. Al Macinnis, who scored the Blues 3rd goal in this game, also played on the Flames in 1989 when they did the same thing, coming back from being down 5-0 in 15:44 and winning in Overtime. The other occasion was in 1982 in the playoffs between the Kings and Oilers. The kings were trailing 5-0 in the third period of a best of 5 series in which they were already down 2-0. they rallied to win the game and eventually win the series, upsetting the oilers and wayne gretzky.

Aside from the historical significance of this game, it really epitomizes everything that was good about the Blues in the Late 90's. Al Macinnis with his rocket shot, Pavol Demitra and others explosive offense, the spirit to keep fighting even when they should be down and out, and Ken Wilson with the amazing Play by Play. It's a shame this team was never able to bring the cup to St.Louis.

Sorry Leafs Fans...

I'll try and find something for you also...

More for ALL the Leafs fans on Covers...

From YouTube user:

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Ian Turnbull scores his 5th goal of the game against the Detroit Red Wings. No NHL D-man had ever scored 5 goals in one game prior to this night, and no D-man still has matched this total. 5 goals in one game by a defenseman is a NHL record.

From YouTube COMMENT:

This was near the end? of the season, and the Flyers were barely in the playoffs with the Leafs about 6 points behind them. The Leafs knew they needed to go basically undefeated to make it, so they took the risk of pulling their goalie to try to avoid having Philly obtain the OTL point.

Weirdest NHL goal ever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=TNJQUO2OhpE&feature=fvwp

From YouTube user:

On November 15th, Ryan Smyth of the Los Angeles Kings scores a goal against the San Jose Shark goaltender Antero Niittymäki that went unnoticed at first. The play went on and a minute later San Jose forward Torrey Mitchell scored a goal. During the intermission, the first situation was video reviewed and determined that the puck had crossed the goal line. Therefore Mitchell's goal was overruled, Smyth's goal allowed and the clock turned back 71 seconds.

Miracle on Manchester

Game recap and interviews clips from - Bob Miller, Jim Fox, Mark Hardy, Dave Taylor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8dZUyOA1RE&feature=related

From Wikipedia:

The Miracle on Manchester is the nickname given to a National Hockey League (NHL) playoff game between the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers that took place on April 10, 1982 in the league's 65th season. The game, the third in a best-of-five postseason series, was played at The Forum, the Kings' home arena at the time, which was situated on Manchester Boulevard (hence the nickname) in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood [1] The Kings completed the largest comeback in NHL playoff history, going from being down 5-0 to win the game 6-5 in overtime. Combined with upset wins in Games 1 and 5, the Kings eliminated the heavily favored Wayne Gretzky-led Oilers in a 3-2 series victory to reach the second round.

Background

The contest was the third in a five-game first-round playoff series between the Kings and Oilers. Under the playoff structure that existed at the time, the top four teams from each division qualified for the playoffs, with the first seed facing the fourth seed and the second and third seeds pairing off in the first round. In 1981–82, Edmonton easily won the division with 111 points, while Los Angeles finished in fourth place, 48 points behind.

NOTE: This video was on a NYRangers station... I guess because they had Messier on the Rags and for some reason wanted to show the hardships a team must endure before becoming champions themselves... like the Rangers with Messier on thier team. That is the only reason I can think of as to WHY the Rangers would put this on thier channel with thier studio guy. Still... It's a nice piece.

Notice how you don't see ANY defensemen trying to block shots... none at all...

I know I had already posted stuff for this game but then I found these so...

... In 2007 the Kings trailed Dallas 4-0 with just over 6 minutes left in the game... LA scored 5 fast goals and took a 5-4 lead but Dallas tied it at 5-5 and the game went to overtime where the Kings won 6-5 on an OT goal by Kopitar.

From a hockey website forum (not Covers)

Others:

March 3, 1999 -- Florida led Colorado 5-0. Colorado won 7-5. Colorado's first goal came with 1:49 left in period two.

November 29, 2000 -- St. Louis trailed Toronto 5-0. Blues won 6-5 in OT. According to an article, it marked the ninth time a team has come back from five goals down to win a game. It was just the second time a team came back from five goals down in the third period. The Blues scored six goals in 15:27 making it the fastest time span a team has come back from a five-goal deficit in NHL history.

The other time was January 26, 1987 when Calgary, down 5-0 in the third to Toronto, won 6-5 in OT. Al MacInnis had a hat trick for the Flames. Calgary scored six goals in 15:28.

March 10, 1968 -- Detroit led Boston 5-0, the Bruins came back to tie 5-5 but the Red Wings won 7-5.

NOTE: I've already posted the Blues comeback but could not locate the Flames comeback game.

I did locate a cool (official looking) Flames YouTube channel...
