#1 Posted: 4/13/2012 9:52:22 PM I know there are much better cards across the country to play tomorrow but something @ Calder caught my attention.
Owner/Trainer Dennis Manning has won 4 of 6 races with horses he owns @ Tampa Bay Downs. On Saturday he ships (actually they probably just took the turnpike) one to Calder for the 150k Calder Derby. #1 Raging Lion won a cheap 20k maiden race in his only try by 5 lengths. The comment was "Much the best." He goes a 1/16th further tomorrow & the morning line is 12-1. There are no superstars in this race & Angel Serpa makes the trip to ride this one. I think he's got a shot at getting a check.
In the 11th race, there's another TB gelding #7 Wiki who ran a good 2nd in his last @ GP as the chalk. Trained by Jaime Ness & ridden by Serpa he shortens to 7F from a mile. Now #8 Abdel's Ghost will be his biggest competition but these 3 are certainly a good start to a late Pick3/DD exotics.
Hoping that Howe Great controls the lead & Castellano has enough at the end to hold off the calvary charge in the Bluegrass. In the Arkansas Derby I'm giving # 9 Sabercat an across the board play.
BOL to all tomorrow.... |

#2 Posted: 4/13/2012 9:54:23 PM Very nice write up Midnight. There is amazing value in betting cheap maidens moving up in class. They are constantly overlooked in the window.

#4 Posted: 4/14/2012 12:08:32 AM The 4th, 6th, and 7th place finishers in Raging Lion's last race finished 1-2-3 today in a 7f race today on the dirt. As you said, Manning has done a great job at Tampa picking his spots this meet. GL |

#6 Posted: 4/14/2012 9:56:39 AM Txs Bull & that's a real good point sp about Raging Lion......
Weather looks like an issue this morning. Very heavy winds & rain is expected.Hope it stays on the turf for the Calder Derby but it's pretty nasty in SFLA right now..... |

#12 Posted: 4/16/2012 8:01:12 PM Well the Calder Derby was taken off the turf but Manning didn't scratch Raging Lion. I wish he would have done so. He got bogged down on the rail & never made a move.
Wiki losing was a tough beat. Calder's strip is deep & gets "cuppy" so shippers don't always fire. Wiki ran well but just didn't have enough Saturday.

Box that and you've got a $1,600+ tri and close to a 13k super!
Pretty sick when you think about it.
