If the league cut back down to 8 to 12 teams at most, then there would be a chance of survival. They're better off just dissolving the NHL and spread the little talent left to the overseas markets where they're wanted.

My thought is for as 12 team "Super League" in Canada with the 7 Canadian NHL team cities plus one more in Toronto and Montreal (makes 9) AND new teams in Quebec City, Hamilton and Windsor (Detroit market)

It wasn't greed - it was this cancerous item called a union.

...

you needed to hear league veep and bettman musclehead bill daly on the radio today attempting to explain the nhl's bargaining rationale...

it was hilarious....i mean, i almost felt sorry for daly reasoning that the league needs a cap of 5 years on player contracts to save owners from themselves... like notorious tightwad jeremy jacobs in boston, a guy with a rep for tossing nickels around like manhole covers, bestowing a 6-year extension to tyler seguin...

then daly says, yes, since the last deal league revenues in fact grew a coupon of billion dollars despite a crippling global economic meltdown BUT consider how much the revenues could have grown if there'd been a better deal in place, meaning the contract actually cost the league money at the same time it was a cash cow...huh bill?...

and how's this for classic lunacy...phoenix remains bankrup, ownerless, and controlled by the league, which claims the players make too much dough and costs need to be reined in, so the nhl-run coyotes give shane doan, 36, a $21.2 million 4-year  deal..

in a word: absurd...

i would have called the show to tell daly how stupid he sounded except i couldn't stop laughing

It wasn't greed - it was this cancerous item called a union.

YOU need to watch the Canadian movie "Net Worth" about how players were consistantly FUCKED by owners like the Norris brothers and Conn Smythe.

anyone who blames unions for everything is a FOOL

Net Worth was an amazing movie, never saw Conn Smythe, Jack Adams the same way again after seeing that. The owners and the league are a joke, so many hypocrisies and bullshit, how they keep Bettman in power for 19 years is beyoned me. I hope hockey will resume, but I would give up a year if they can get rid of Bettman and get someone sane who can save the NHL.

There was a union before Gary Bettman came along, and the league ran along just fine. How about we get rid of people LIKE Gary Bettman.

The NHL is mostly a Business now 1st - a sport 2nd .
In my job ( I'm now retired ) in the newspaper industry back in
the 60's / 70's / 80's / 90's all was fine - but then came the internet
out very strong and alota major newspapers went outa business .
The demand for newsprint is down 60 % in 2012 and my previous
company went bankrupt 2 years ago and to save the small mill
here last year the union had to accept a 17 % cut in wages and
benifits - option # 2 - shut the mill down .

If your business you work in starts to lose money you will be
subjective to layoffs and a reduction in wages etc .

Now I think there are too many teams in this league and what if
after this lockout - 5 or 6 go outa business - where are all the
fringe players( 350 ) going to earn approx 1 million a year for there
4-5 minutes they get on the ice a game - NO WHERE .
They will pay the price of a business going outa business
then who will they blame - Bettman or the union .

cheers

The "teams" that cant survive on the old CBA are the ones that gary forced onto the league.  The majority of team owners would've NEVER locked out the players bc theyre making money.  If the NHL was made up of 20 teams, there wouldnt be one unprofitable team and hockey wouldnt be in the mess that its in now.  Angry fans are blaming the players or the owners, but their anger is misdirected.  This lockout is the result of ONE person and the garbage teams he's subjected us to.  team owners of Det, Phil, NY, Tor, Mtl, etc etc would accept a 50/50 split of HRR, but hockey juggernauts like Phoenix and Dallas need a 90% stake of HRR or it wont work!!  Heck, it prob still wouldnt work.  What a cruel joke

Thats a shame because it is #1 by far in Canada and those are the teams that are making money...Buttman hates Canadians and is to stupid or pigheaded to realize this is where more teams need to be relocated...

OMG, the NHL is ranked 5th in the US...holy crap...knowing that, i will never watch hockey again!!  I mean, why would i want to watch a sport thats ranked 5th in the US???  Fukk that garbage.  Hey josbran, where is nascar ranked in the US, i dont want to be left behind. I`ll let you in on something that`s not very secretive where i live....35,000,000 people north of the 49th parallel watch hockey,  My entire family, aunt, uncle, cousins, neighbours, mechanic, butcher and the local pastor ALL watch hockey!!.  So right about now, you can shove that 5th ranking right up your arse.  Also, i will guarantee you that you WOULDNT WATCH the alleged top 4 sports if you didnt wager on them. Oh and one other thing, if the NHL is dead, its because of 15 completely useless broke disinterested American teams that was forced onto us by one of your own...a cocksucker person midget person lawyer who has never played the game in his life.

Dangerbay.....I love the NHL but the facts are that when the players hired Don Fehr they all but assured themselves of a lockout. Fehr has got a ego as big as Canada because of what he got away with in baseball. As long as he is in the players corner there will never be a settlement until the owners say uncle. Also, because the game is not an " American pastime" the US congress won't even get involved in the dispute. Remember when the NHL lost the whole season did the US congress call for investigations or put pressure on the league to settle. No they did not, that will tell you all you need to know about how important NHL hockey is in the USA. By the way I hate Nascar. I really hope this will be settled so I can watch my NY Rangers win the Cup!!!!  Let's all keep putting pressure on both sides using phone calls and emails so we can get this great sport going.

Do we really all like watching the NHL regular season games as we all know the Best Hockey played  is in the playoffs - I would say we like it
because it's another sport we can wager on .
I'm canadian eh !!! and get the centre ice pkg every year and watch
only the games I've bet on - I'm not going to watch for example a
Columbus @Carolina for the entertainment of that game and there are a ton of other regular season games I would not tune into unless I've bet them .
LOVE THOSE PLAYOFFS THOSE - FASTER AND MORE EXCITING BY FAR .

cheers

You hit  it square on the puck Skeeter .For most , NHL reg season has as much excitement and as the WNBA.  Except for the diehard ,who most live in those 2 or 3 strong hockey markets or dont live in USA at all, most sports gamblers and or watchers dont even know or care about the 2 weeks that the NHL pulled at the beginning of there long season this year.  Between the many teams that change markets and names, most cant even name all the teams and where they play. Not the same with baseball football, even NBA..That along with the fact that they have no clue how to market the players in general, ,,most cant even name 10 players let alone know what they look like even. If you talk to pro gamblers ,reg.season hockey is talked about and considered a good betting opportunity, behind even horse racing. The public dont care ,it had a chance  awhile back to break into the mainstream ,but that orgiinazation they call a unionscrewed up the only chance they had. Yes Playoff hockey is a better product and a better more exciting gambling option, but not enough for most to care about. If it disolved it would be forgotten about in no time .IEven with the kids .you use to see kids playnghockey in the streets ,no more, its to hard for mainstream high schools to have teams and leagues, the problems go on and on .Even at the pro level look at last year a team like the LA Kings that are lucky to even make the playoffs in a league where half the teams make it goes on and wins the cup?? Talk about a inferior product .. Scew hockey leave it for the Euros and the frogs up north.

Top five sports in USA .

# 1   NFL

#2   Baseball

#3   Basketball

#4 Nascar...... Not my number four but it is what it is

#5   NHL.......In my book NHL is # 3

See what the TV networks pay the most money for and you'll know why NHL is # 5......Nascar has the highest attendence per event. Also ask the Vegas books what sports have the highest handle.

,Look at those icelanders Potvin(ty steve somers)  that u support.,they are a storied franchise  supposedly , in one of  the greatest sport states and no one cares that the Mosileum will be  without hockey for ever.  Hockey on Long island use to be a big deal, but because of a regular season thats like a 3 month preseason, a sport that  has no clue how to market there teams,  owners that are clueless and a union that  bows down to them .All spells doom . The county has voted down every proposal to redue the Coliseum because no one cares if the NHL (let alone a Islander team that hasent been relivent in 10 years) leavesfor good. Its just time to realize that this sport has deteriorated into a inferior product and hasent changed with the times .Case in Point stop 10 people on the street and ask if they even know who won the Stanley cup let alone name the top 3 players on the team>
