#1 Posted: 1/11/2009 9:02:47 PM The New York Giants' thrilling 17-14 win over the New England Patriots in Arizona was the most-watched Super Bowl ever in the United States, with 97.5 million viewers, Nielsen Media Research said Monday.
The game eclipsed the previous record of 94.08 million, set when Dallas faced Pittsburgh in 1996. Last year's game between Indianapolis and Chicago was seen by 93.2 million people....why? Cause alot of ppl wanted to see the Colts/Manning do well is what my guess is.
Fox charges $2.7 million per 30 seconds slot during the Superbowl. Higher the ratings, the more money Fox/NFL makes.
It appears to me Pittsburgh has a big market of viewers and a long history of fans so getting them in the Superbowl would be a "must" for $$$$$$$/advertisement purposes.
Between Zona and Philly..who would the fans/ppl of America wil get excited about, to play against Pitt in the Superbowl?????
Afterall, the NFL is such big business now and all they care about are ratings and commercials slots in the Superbowl.

Why is this a factor? Cause the damn refs dictate the game with their penalties to kill drives.......yes, it's the old conspiracy theory again.  |

Jawing would be required, Mike Tomlin would get some of the praise he so richly deserves, Ben Roethlisberger would get praised for his exquisite game-managing skills, and the Eagles would get talking heads to talk up the “Philly is the new Boston” storyline.
But, really, is there a better Super Bowl than this? Both teams can throw and run, and they’ll put their speed (Willie Parker, DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook, and both defenses) on a field in Tampa that’s more conducive to fleet feet than the Ketchup Bottle and the Linc, chilly and brutal as they are.
Oh, and it’s a regional rivalry. Oh, and it’s interesting, nationally, two bigger markets with high profile names. Oh, and it’s new coach vs. old coach, McNabb vs. his past, Jim Johnson vs. person LeBeau, and the never-done-it Eagles vs. the one-for-the-other-thumb Steelers. |

The higest seeded team right now is #2 Pittsburgh, #4 Arizona and TWO #6s Philly & Baltimore...so base on the odds of four times in this decade's first eight seasons the Super Bowl was claimed by a team that didn't even earn a first-round bye....so the odds of the best team to win a Superbowl would be #6 Baltimore or #6 Philly.

other than that who cares....everyone is going to watch the Super Bowl....it's the quality of the game, not the match-up that dictates the ratings...
every Super Bowl starts out with a 90+ rating....then depending on who the game goes it hold steady or drops...
In last years game alot of people who would not normally watch the Super Bowl tuned in to see if the Pats would go undefeated
then they stayed tuned in because it was such a good close game....

To your point:
Phantom holding  & early whistles on possible turnovers calls have been more abundant than any time I can remember seeing in close to 40 years of watching games every Sunday.  |

Undefeated Pats???? and New York...they could put the Texans vs. the undefeated Pats last season and it would get the big rating because they wanted to see 17 or 18-0.
I Pitt superbowl will get alot of rating, throw in the fact a Ken Whisenhunt going up against his old team and Warner grocery boy on a comeback to the superbowl will get alot of ppl excited.
