And was told there is a 90 day probabtion period when you start, if you miss one day you are fired.  Is this normal?  I wasn't told about this in the interview, just the first day I reported.  I have a doctors appointments in a couple weeks I told them about and they said I have to cancel the appointment or be let go.  I understand this may be to weed out those who don't want to be there, but when people have things scheduled before they started a job that shouldn't be held against you.

I agree, but you are behind the 8 ball cause you have no leverage. Is this a good place to work?

Good luck bro

I agree. However, in this day and age, I would skip the Doctors appointment. Go to work make a good impression.. Remember, if you miss work they have 500 appliciants waiting for your job...

One of your bosses told you to cancel your Dr's appointment and you'd be let go if you went?

And you're giving them a few weeks notice?

It's called Employment at Will.  They can let you go at any time for any reason as long as it's not an illegal reason.  Probationary periods are a joke.  So after 3 months, are you more of an employee than you were for the first 3 months?  Nope.

It's a stupid policy that doesn't really do person for a company.  I've hired over 500 people in my career and this idiotic policy doesn't add any value at all.

Bottom line:  They can still fire you if they don't like the clothes you wear.  Idiotic on their part, but figure out a way to re-schedule your appointments (maybe over "lunch") if you want to keep your job.

Another question:  Is this the type of company you want to work for?

Probationary period is fine but what if you get sick sometime during that time, accident, funeral etc.It goes without saying that you would be on thin ice if you missed time, but to tell ya your history before hand seems a tad harsh. GL

Probationary Employment Has Little Legal Impact

Virtually every state is an "at will" employment jurisdiction. This means your boss has the right to fire you for almost any reason that does not involve discrimination. A probationary employment period doesn't override at-will employment law. You're not guaranteed a job at the end of probation, and your employer can let you go during the probation period.

I can understand the probation period if there is a strong union involved. It gives the employer a few months to make sure things will work out before the employee receives full backing from the union.

can u give us details?

temp job? what state? union? is it a job w. advancement opps?

some companies are diff. here where i live if u do well in ur prob period u actually get bump'd up in pay and in responsibilities.

so u can actually be making 25/hr as oppose to 20 n hour during ur prob period depending on ur habits/etc. (dont pick ur nose and put it on the keyboard)

make good impression, dont tell em u got diabetes or else u'll be fired anyways. dont tell em u once drank 9 amp energy drinks before a jerk off session.

they dont like to hire people who make the health care coverage go up.

as for ur situation, dont go to the doctor. reschedule it. shocked they hired u even though u told them about the doctors appointment. must be a shietty HR department. doctors appointment is RED FLAG!

It's not my ideal job, but it's a job.  Thing is, I got a call for a second interview for a much better job at the end of the month.  An interview that if I go to, I will need to miss time at my current job, which will cause me to get fired.

Current job is a rent a car company, 9.25/hr plus commission, no real advancment opprotunities.  Other job I'm interviewing for starts at 21/hr with better benefits and something I'd enjoy more

Sounds like Hertz. At least @ Enterprise you have growth potential but like most anywhere you have to work your behind off to be recognized.

BOL in whatever you decide....

Agreed.

Don't know why you'd even consider staying with these guys.  They lied in your face and fucked you over on day one with this 90 day no sickness bombshell.  Is that really the type of people you want to work along side?

Corporate pieces of garbage.

Sounds like the kind of employer who will demand your loyalty even though they would throw you under the bus "at will".

Show up, do your job but never become emotionally attached to the job. Loyalty shouldn't be a one way street.

sounds like a shitty place to work.

also, did you bring up the appointment at the interview?  if not, that is something to remember going forward.  it's usually best to bring up any preplanned things then, that way they aren't surprised by it and also gives you an idea of them as a company as well with their response to it.
