debt ceiling = a limit imposed by Congress on how much debt the U.S. can carry at any given time.
The debt ceiling is bravo sierra.......
This concept is just plain stupid..in the last 20 years it has been raised 18 times to pay for all kinds of government programs, tax cuts and wars....
It is not a economic principle, its a political principle ..get rid of it ..when spending for anything comes up ...just decide how we are going to pay for it ..do it and lets move on..

Here is part of the reason the fed is bloated and strapped
During his State of the Union address, Obama noted that 12 federal agencies or offices deal with international trade and at least two regulate salmon. Top administration officials are planning to revamp how the government handles trade issues -- and may later turn to other programs.
They'll have plenty to choose from, according to a Government Accountability Officereport released Tuesday. The U.S. government has more than 100 programs dealing with surface transportation issues, 82 monitoring teacher quality, 80 for economic development, 47 for job training, 20 offices or programs devoted to homelessness and 17 different grant programs for disaster preparedness. Another 15 agencies or offices handle food safety, and five are working to ensure the federal government uses less gasoline.

I dont know wall, you are a better economist than I.
At what ratio of GDP to debt are we screwed?
Japan I seem to recall has a MUCH higher ratio than we do..and they have kept rates at our levels for over a decade..so I guess until the music stops the game can go on a long long time.

SS....I agree and like wall said it will never happen until the money and special interests are no longer part of our political process.
He also said "it wont happen" and it wont ..unless "we the people" start voting for congressional representatives, that put the American people first and foremost and use pitchforks and torches to make sure they do just that ...If Congress made decisions and laws that were really in the best interest of the country and not themselves $$$..I don't believe what we have seen in recent years would have happened.. and that is a divided nation.

Algore parallels the budget chaos to climate change.......
"The tendency by many members of Congress to deny the reality of the government shutdown and the cost that would have accompanied a default on U.S. debt obviously mirrors the denial of the climate crisis and a refusal to recognize the cost of continuing to spew all this carbon into the atmosphere," Gore said Thursday.

I think you have it the other way around. Unless we get rid of most money and special interests FIRST, those candidates will not be available.

I don't pretend to have all the answers but I think all these should help:
1. Term limit is a MUST. Seriously, if a max 2-term president could be such a problem, what do you think about the Congress?
2. We need to get rid of all PACs, including unions, corporations, any groups that claim to put up ads on behalf of their candidates...etc. Just allocate a pre-determined budget for each.
I know those are easier said than done and there are others as well. I would love to hear your ideas, too.

Bunny, that's a good start. I agree on term limits.. three terms for Congress and one term for the Presidency ( a 6 year term) so that there is no need for a sitting President to have to campaign while he's the President..
Now, the stickler campaign finance..The way it is now you need to be a lawyer to know all the FEC and Federal Campaign finance laws..and by the time they catch a violation it seems that the person who acquired the un-lawful finances has already profited from the money or is by then elected..( enforcement is a problem).
So, I feel all campaign finances for Congress House/Senate and for the Presidency should come from the U.S. Treasury at a set amount.. to deter abuses..stop all public funding. ( that way I wont get 5 calls a day for 6 mths.after my candidate,I contributed to..sells his list of contributors to pay off his debt)....lol
..and that all Congressional and Presidential campaigning (including the primaries) not start until that election year....not a day before

In addition, we need to extend that to the state/city levels. Not all, but a lot of them were coming from the bottom. Otherwise, we just get a bunch of "well-trained professional" candidates.
We also need to take away many perks they enjoy now. I don't know the details but what I do know is they have a GREAT insurance, pension plans...etc, including the staffers. All they should have is just the basic. if they want something better, they need to pay out from their own pockets like everyone else.
Transparency!! Any gift over a pre-determined amount($50, $100 or whatever) needs to be posted on their own websites for everyone to see and that includes those from family members. Every travel they do need to be done the same. No more paid-vacation in the name of "official travel" where they only spend 10 mins on the site. Detailed schedules need to be posted!!

The list is long indeed, but we can start with a public out cry to not allow any members of the legislative branch of our federal government to be exempt from laws..that they themselves have passed..
