The smugness is based on fact, the arrogance grounded in truth. The proof is in the hardware, and six consecutive crystal footballs don't lie. It is the best college football conference in the land.
Manti Te'o and the Irish will face either Alabama or Georgia in the Jan. 7 BCS title game. (AP)
But occasionally arrogance leads to blindness, or at least severe myopia. And for all the SEC elitists guaranteeing a blowout by whoever wins its league against Notre Dame in the BCS championship game, I'm here to offer an eye test.
Look at the facts, get over the regional bias and acknowledge that someone outside of Dixie might actually be good at football.
My friend Clay Travis, who runs the excellent SEC blog, "Outkick the Coverage," was the voice of SEC arrogance Sunday morning on Twitter. Quoth Clay: "Notre Dame will be destroyed by either Alabama or Georgia. Seventh best team in SEC. At best."
Let me repeat that I'm a fan of Clay's and enjoy his work, but this is ridiculous. Notre Dame may indeed lose the national title game, but I don't foresee a blowout and an Irish victory would not be an outlandish outcome (especially if the opponent is Georgia).
And anyone who believes Notre Dame would be the seventh-best team in the SEC needs to get out more.
[Related: Irish complete rise to prominence]
The gist of this argument is that the Irish could not have played anywhere near the schedule of an SEC team. Unfortunately, it's completely false. Here's the reality, stacking all 12 games on the Irish ledger alongside Alabama's and Georgia's and using the Sagarin Ratings as a measuring stick:
Best opponent played: Notre Dame hosted Stanford (eighth in Sagarin), Alabama hosted Texas A&M (seventh), Georgia played Florida (fourth) at a neutral site. The Irish and Bulldogs both won close games. The Crimson Tide lost at home. Most impressive of the three: Georgia.
Second-best opponent: Notre Dame visited Oklahoma (ninth). Alabama visited LSU (11th). Georgia visited South Carolina (10th). The Irish won by 17 points, the Tide won by four in the final minute, the Bulldogs lost by four touchdowns. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Third-best opponent: Notre Dame played USC (16th) on the road, never trailed and won by nine. Alabama played Michigan (20th) at a neutral site, never trailed and won by 27. Georgia hosted Vanderbilt (29th) and won by 45. Most impressive of the three: Alabama.
Fourth-best opponent: Notre Dame played Michigan (20th) at home and won by a touchdown. Alabama played Mississippi (33rd) on the road and won by 19. Georgia hosted Mississippi (33rd) and won by 27. All three won. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Fifth-best opponent: Notre Dame hosted BYU (37th) and won by three. Alabama hosted Mississippi State (36th) and won by 31. Georgia visited Missouri (43rd) and won by 21. All three won. Most impressive of the three: Alabama.
[Watch: Highlights from Notre Dame's victory over USC]
Sixth-best opponent: Notre Dame visited Michigan State (39th) and won by 17. Alabama visited Missouri (43rd) and won by 32. Georgia visited Tennessee (54th) and won by seven. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Seventh-best opponent: Notre Dame played Miami (52nd) on a neutral field and won by 38. Alabama visited Tennessee (54th) and won by 31. Georgia hosted Georgia Tech (63rd) and won by 32. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Alabama coach Nick Saban has won two of the SEC's six straight national titles.
Eighth-best opponent: Notre Dame hosted Purdue (62nd) and won by three. Alabama visited Arkansas (65th) and won by 49. Georgia visited Auburn (84th) and won by 38. Most impressive of the three: Alabama.
Ninth-best opponent: Notre Dame hosted Pittsburgh (66th) and won by three in triple overtime. Alabama hosted Western Kentucky (82nd) and won by 35. Georgia visited Kentucky (92nd) and won by five. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Tenth-best opponent: Notre Dame played Navy (73rd) at a neutral site and won by 40. Alabama hosted Auburn (84th) and won by 49. Georgia hosted Georgia Southern (99th) and won by 31. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Eleventh-best opponent: Notre Dame hosted Wake Forest (113th) and won by 38. Alabama hosted Florida Atlantic (127th) and won by 33. Georgia hosted Florida Atlantic (127th) and won by 36. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Worst opponent: Notre Dame visited Boston College (121st) and won by 15. Alabama hosted Western Carolina (204th) and won by 49. Georgia hosted Buffalo (135th) and won by 22. Most impressive of the three: Notre Dame.
Eight times out of 12, the Irish have had the most impressive performance when assessing comparable opponents. Notre Dame is 2-0 against the Sagarin top 10, whereas Alabama is 0-1 and Georgia is 1-1. Notre Dame is 4-0 against the Sagarin top 20, whereas Alabama is 2-1 and Georgia is 1-1.
So don't say the Irish haven't been seasoned by a schedule every bit as difficult – no, more difficult – than the SEC top dogs. And they've had far fewer games where they just had to show up to win. Irish have a better defense as most teams bama played good put up many points... Brian Kelly is a better coach.Google him and you will agree....The Irish are at the beging of many years of being good as the seniors go (most from x-coach recruiting ) we currently have the 4th ranked incoming class again look it up. Hate the Irish fine but dont continue to quote incorrect facts or correct facts based on one game like pitt...we won period..12-0
What all you Bama bashers keep forgetting, or didn't realize, is that Bama did something that only one other team in history has done!  They played 3 top 15 teams in 3 straight weeks!  One was at the toughest place to play, as a visitor, in college football!  The final was against a Heisman winning QB that has an exceptional team behind him!  I have been a ND fan since I was a kid...but if they had played that same level of games 3 weeks in a row...they lose at least 2!  ND won most of their games by teams turning over the ball...Bama doesn't make mistakes like that.  Bama 30 ND 9.

LMFAO!!!

you are counting miss st as a top 15 team, what a joke. look at their schedule before the bama game that led the to be the "15th best team" 9 of the 10 teams in the big 12 would have been undefeated up to that pt with that trash schedule.

Please all you gold dome clones, bet on your team so that the line will stop going up. Anything under 14 is a gift, but the way it's going it could tempt me to middle.

Notre Dame - 21                                   Alabama - 17

Fighting Irish +10                              under 41.5

The Bailey's Irish Creme will be going down smooth during this slugfest....Kelly named College Football coach of the year. Usually it's a good bet to take the coach who wins this award in their following game. The 10 points is a bonus here. Let's see if Kelly can coach em up to win this one su.

Alabama almost always shows up in hyped up games such as this one and shocks the country. Remember last year.... LSU did not cross the 50 yard line and Alabama won 21-0. Notre Dame wont fit the bill. SEC takes home 7th Title. BOOK IT DANNO.

that was a much much better defense against a lousy lsu offense....10 pts is a gift here...ND

The public/media outpouring of support for Notre Dame is great for TV ratings, and great for those who plan on betting Alabama.  Notre Dame is a very good team in their own right, do not get me wrong, but athletically they will not match up on the defensive side of the ball.  Not saying there defense is bad, but they have faced NOTHING like Alabama's offensive line.  This Alabama team is not as talented on the defensive side of the ball as they were last year, but there offensive line is ELITE (3 All Americans), there backfield is ELITE (2, 1000 yard rushers in the best conference/defensive conference in college football).  Notre Dame will lose this game big when there defensive line is tired (similar to Georgia) and Alabama's defensive line is taking defenders out of the play at the second level.  Texas A&M is an underrated team that lost very competitive games against two top-10 teams. Even in that game Texas A&M, takes advantage of Manziel's ability to improvise outside the pocket, Alabama adjusts.  That was a 24-9 game from 2nd quarter on, some questionable play calling on the goal line (partially due to a tender ankle suffered by Barrett Jones in the game) may have cost Bama there undefeated season.  Damontre Moore caused a lot of problems for the Alabama O-line, but Notre Dame does not have anyone of that caliber athletically.  No offense to Nix and Tuitt, but they size and athleticism is just not the same.  Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack are some of the best offensive lineman in the past decade to come through college.  Then we get to Everett Golston; good player, in over his head in this game.  Saban with over a month to prepare vs an inexperienced, raw quarterback = bad day for Golston. Notre Dame does not have the talent offensively to beat Bama.  Look at the troubles Denard Robinson had.  Alabama 34-10, in a game that is never in question.

Wow! ND 13 MI 6 plus overrated USC, BC, Wakeforest! Since ND so bad behind according to the Irish fan! Then how come AL is favorable (10), why not put the money in your mouth and give me (AL) plus the points! This way you can save the juice!

WTF are you talking about. You must be high. First of all A&M beat Bama in TUSCALOOSA, AL, second 52-17. Come on man. Repeating for a College National Title is on of the hardest things to do, even if Bama wins ND is covering the spread.I'm tired of hearing ND didn't play anyone or Bama didn't play anyone, Both Teams are great and will be close. I personally think ND wins because of their D but I will take the points to be safe and put a small bet on ML.

I don't even think this game is going to be close.. You can throw all your stats out there, like how Notre Dame faced all these top 25 teams.. They played teams that were overrated.  Oklahoma was probably their toughest game, and Notre Dame didn't even play that good.  They haven't seen a defense even half as good as Alabama's.. And with the 2 RB system Bama has, they will get it done.  Teo'o is going to have 0 impact on this game.. Bama wins by at least 14.   So confident, that I'm legit throwing $500 on Bama.. Just waiting for the spread to go down a bit potentially.

Caution on All Remaining Bowl Games!

Must use great caution on all remaining "Bowl" games.  Oregon State throwing footballs directly into the hands (three times) of enemy players only ten yards away...TCU fumbling footballs on two yard lines...yesterday's game of a team "fumbling" footballs twice on the ONE YARD line...and Duke covering 10 point spread and has "sudden fumbles" allowing Cincinnati to cover the spread with 2 minutes in game!

And many, many "flags" even noticed by the TV commentators as "false flags".  None of these type of incidents in regular season play!  Only in muti-million dollar Bowl Games with Vegas in total control!  Many sports bettors must be noticing these "sudden" turn arounds in the bowl games.

Can't be "sour grapes" as I've been on the winning side of a few of these "disasters".  But such actions, in bowl game after bowl game, no "accidents".  Many have noticed the same, no doubt.  Must use extreme caution on all remaining bowl games...even more so with Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl!

$300 on Notre Dame & $300 on Alabama.  I'm guaranteed to "win", but lose the juice.

Good Luck to All.  It will be needed!

Wow, this game brings out some strange postings but it does indicate why the line is so low, use that to your advantage.  It isn't like ND isn't a decent team this year, they are thanks to the defense, but they are not among the best 8 in the country because they cannot score enough to win against a good defense.

Alabama's OL will win this game, it is that simple.  They are the best group in the country and they have excellent power running backs with speed.  They will wear the ND defense down after the 1st quarter adenaline rush subsides.  When ND brings backers up to help, a very average Tide QB will hit open receivers.  It goes without saying that ND cannot put up points against a defense the caliber of Alabama's, they couldn't against average defenses all year.  This is a mismatch folks, the only chance ND has is for Alabama to hand the game with turnovers or Special Team mistakes....in case you haven't noticed Saban teams don't do those thibgs.  Anything is possible, but this as close to a gift as you are going to get for a title game.  If you want to see how this one plays out, go back to the Alabama/Michigan season opener but give ND less offense, but a stouter defense.  Still not close.

We deserve better, give us a playoff and get the pretenders out in the early rounds.  Bama wins by 17 to 24 points.   5 unit play foe me.

As a side note anyone betting notre dame ml is a fool, not because they don't have a shot at winning, but because the books are completely friggin you with the ML in this game. Take a look at other 10 point spreads, they typically give you anywhere between +380-+500, ive even seen as high as +650 before on ten point spreads. Yet in this game the books are giving you +265-+290. The books are scared of notre dame in this game.

I wouldn't be shocked if Notre Dame won, which I rarely think about any double digit underdog.  I feel compelled to take the points.  It's hard to imagine ND getting blown out when they've been so defensively solid all year.

I hate n.d but I love them with 10 points. Dis is a championship game remember with to good defense and I think bama have problems defending a running quarterback. I think its going down to who has the ball last field goal to win game. So n.d +10 with Kent St +3.5 lol...

This game is going to be a blowout simply because ND defense is going to b on the field all game. Nick Saban teams are built for the 4th quarter and this game will b all over by that time because ND will not move the ball effectivily enough to keep bama from getting great firld position all night. USC prolly beats ND if matt barkley plays and BAMA Qb play is much better that barkley. Nick saban pro stylr offense will run the ball and toast ND with the play action. NICK SABAN always will get the best recruits and talent because every year his team is championship quality and with this win he cements his legacy as one of the best COLLEGE COACHES ever. bama wins easily based on coaching, talent level, conditioning, eye test, and strenght of schedule and confrence. This is a no brainer most people betting based on a hope the SEC goes down but if you really watch the tape BAMA gets it done against an inexperienced ND QB and a overrrated ND defense.

BAMA WINS CONVINCINGLY 42-10 quite possibly a shutout
