2* Safarova -144 (WTA)
Kanepi's coming off a title win on Saturday, quick flight and has to play immediately here without much practice on the funky blue clay. Fatigue and match focus should come in to play here.

1* Gimeno-Traver +127
Gimeno-Traver having a brutal year on the tour so far but managed two decent wins here in qualifying. Like him to keep the momentum going here at home over an up and down Hanescu.

cheers guys, 3-0 +5.27

(YTD 96-88 +32.36)

Tuesday

2* Nalbandian/Raonic over 22.5 -102
Fast conditions so Raonic will be extremely difficult to break and given Nalbandian's ability to control rallies against tall players he should be able to hold his own serve in a tightly contested match.

1* Llodra +178
Seppi coming off a title and arrives here with limited practice for his 4th straight tournament. Llodra should find this surface well to his liking and will be able to implement his usual style of serve and volley with success given the court speed. Add in his dominance of Seppi, 3-0 h2h with only one lost set, and the Italian's busy month of tennis and this has all the makings of an upset.

1* Tomic/Dolgopolov +210

I don't think Dolgo can win an match that doesn't make his backers sweat.

2-1 +1.7

(YTD 99-95 +27.86)

How fast is Madrid, a "clay" surface?

Cincinnati is considered the fastest hardcourt on tour and obviously the hardest to break on, with a service hold percentage of 82.1%.

Madrid's lightning blue surface so far? 81.4%!

It's out ranking almost all of the hardcourts and half(!) of the indoor courts in terms of hold percentage due to it's quickness. Definitely not your typical clay event.

Friday
2* Del Potro/Dolgopolov over 21 +109

Yeah, these courts are the fastest clay courts I've ever seen. These courts make Stuttgart (another fast Indoor clay) look like quicksand.

I feel like Tsonga and Almagro were the right bets today as well, they just didn't come through because they are mentally weak.

This tourney is really favoring the server and quick strikers. I can't see Fed not getting to the final on his side. He should beat Ferrer and Djoker on this surface.

Then on the other side, it's wide open between Delpo, Berdych and even Nando has a shot.

Matter of fact I like Fed vs Berdych in the final. This surface is tailor made for Fed to beat Ferrer (rather easily) and Djoker (not playing all that well and not a good surface for him). I feel like Nando will have a letdown against Berdych and Delpo will beat Dolgo and run out of gas against Berdych.

I would be pissed off if I was Djoker. He has to defend his points on this Indoor hard court covered in dust instead of the natural clay from last year.

Its not the speed of the surface...its how slippery the court is.  This court is like playing on ice...its super hard to change directions on this stuff. When people are uncomfortable with their footing they don't defend as well and don't even try to run balls down.

nice to see you back sparty

I view it as a correlation between the speed and slipperiness of this surface. If it were playing slower the players would have more time between shots to gain traction and change momentum, but with it being so fast they're constantly scrambling to find footing.

Tipsy and Simon managed it quite well in the late match and looked quite comfortable on it with some great baseline exchanges. Meanwhile Djokovic looked lost at times and was sliding all over the place, losing his footing. I think he's still intent/stubborn on trying to play it like a clay surface while others have adapted. Just my take on it.

To me that's not tennis. Either I come out with football shoes or I invite Chuck Norris to advise me how to play on this court. Center court is impossible to move on. I hit five balls throughout the whole match. With everything else, I was just trying to keep the ball in the court.

''When you slide on the red clay you have a feeling you can stop and recover from that step. But here, whatever you do ... you are always slipping. Not a single player - not woman not man - I didn't hear anyone say 'I like blue clay.'''
